Samsung DeX can give a compatible Galaxy phone a desktop-style interface on an external screen, making it useful for everyday work without carrying a separate computer. But the headline’s claim depends on the exact phone, software version, connection method and apps: DeX is not supported by every Galaxy model, and it does not make a phone equivalent to a Windows or Mac PC.
What using a Galaxy phone as a desktop with DeX means
DeX is Samsung’s desktop-style experience for compatible Galaxy phones and tablets. Connect a supported device to a monitor or TV, then use apps in desktop-style windows. You can control the setup with a keyboard and mouse, and Samsung documents using the mobile device itself as an input surface in some configurations. This is a practical way to use a phone on a larger screen, not a conversion into a conventional PC. What you can do depends on the apps you use: some work well with a keyboard, mouse and resizable windows, while others remain designed for a phone-sized touchscreen. Samsung’s FAQ says DeX can display up to five apps at once; window and screen behavior can vary by software release. Check Samsung’s current DeX FAQ for details tied to your version.

Compatibility is the first hurdle. Samsung maintains separate guidance for wired or wireless DeX on an external display and for DeX for PC. A phone appearing in one list does not mean it supports every DeX connection method. Do not assume that a USB-C connector guarantees video output or DeX. Support varies by model and connection mode. Older phones may be supported, but “old Galaxy” alone is not enough to establish that a particular phone will work with a monitor, wirelessly, or with a PC.
Connect DeX to a monitor or TV
Wired HDMI connection
For a wired setup, Samsung documents using a compatible HDMI cable or adapter with a supported phone and an HDMI-equipped display. The basic arrangement is phone to adapter or cable to display; connect power and peripherals as needed for your chosen hardware. Confirm the phone supports wired DeX and that the display has the matching input. Samsung’s setup instructions cover supported connection options.

A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter for Samsung DeX is a reasonable accessory category to consider, not a guarantee of compatibility. Check the adapter and phone requirements before purchasing. DeX Pad and DeX Station are other documented options for supported models, but Samsung notes that some phones may not fit those accessories; a cable may be needed instead. Samsung also supports wireless DeX on compatible devices when connecting to a supported TV or monitor, including compatible Miracast-capable displays. Wireless availability and performance depend on both the phone and receiving display; Samsung does not guarantee performance with every third-party wireless endpoint. Keyboard and mouse
A keyboard and mouse make a monitor-based setup more desktop-like. Samsung documents supported peripherals for DeX, though what works can depend on the connection arrangement and device. You can also use the phone as an input surface in some setups, but that is not a substitute for a separate keyboard and mouse for everyone. DeX on a monitor is not the same as DeX for PC
With monitor-based DeX, the Galaxy phone drives the desktop-style interface on an external display. DeX for PC instead connects the phone to a computer to use DeX within the PC environment. Their compatibility lists and limitations are distinct.

Samsung says DeX for PC is unsupported on devices running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later, and directs users to Link to Windows for certain PC-connected functions. That change applies to DeX for PC; it does not mean that external-monitor DeX has stopped working on all affected devices. Samsung also notes that DeX for PC is unavailable on some newer models and software versions. Check the current guidance for your model and software before relying on a PC-connected workflow. What DeX can—and cannot—replace in a daily routine
DeX can be a useful everyday desktop when the work fits the phone’s apps and the external-display setup. It is not a universal desktop replacement: app support, window behavior and multitasking differ, and the phone remains the computing device. Samsung’s FAQ describes software-version-sensitive behavior, including a change beginning with One UI 8.0 to a feature for moving app windows between screens. - Likely to suit: tasks that your phone apps already handle and that benefit from a larger screen, keyboard or mouse.
- Check first: whether the apps you depend on support the controls and window behavior you need in DeX.
- Do not assume: every desktop application, peripheral, Galaxy model or software release will behave the same way.
A quick compatibility checklist
- Identify the exact Galaxy model and its Android and One UI versions.
- Decide whether you want wired or wireless DeX on a monitor or TV, or DeX for PC; these are different connection scenarios.
- Check Samsung’s current compatibility guidance for that model and connection type.
- For wired use, confirm the phone supports video output and DeX, and match a supported HDMI cable or adapter to the display’s input.
- For wireless use, confirm the phone and display support the required connection; allow for differences in third-party display performance.
- Check whether a DeX Pad or Station supports and physically fits the phone, if you plan to use one.
- Test the apps and input devices you rely on before treating DeX as your only desktop setup.
