An old Android phone can become a capable emulation handheld without buying another device. I use one as the best emulation handheld in my house—and it cost me nothing because I already owned the phone. That is a personal verdict, not a promise that every older phone will run every game well.
Why an old phone can work for emulation
RetroArch lists Android phones and tablets among its supported platforms, so an Android phone is a plausible place to start. That compatibility does not guarantee that a particular phone has enough performance for every emulator or game; the phone model, operating-system version, and the games you want to play all matter. RetroArch’s Android documentation explains its platform support.
Think of the phone as a device to try with the specific games you care about, rather than assuming it will replace a dedicated handheld across the board. Install suitable emulation software, try your intended games, and decide whether the results meet your expectations.

Set up the phone around the games you want to play
- Choose an emulator for your target games. RetroArch is one Android option, but support for Android does not mean it runs every system or that every phone handles every game smoothly.
- Pick an input method. You can start with touchscreen controls or connect a physical controller. Android documents game-controller support for phones and tablets, but individual controllers and games may require configuration. See Android’s game-controller documentation.
- Configure controls if needed. RetroArch maps physical controller input to a virtual RetroPad and provides configuration options at broad and per-core or per-game levels. Its input and controls guide describes the mapping process.
- Test the actual setup. Try the games you plan to play and check comfort, responsiveness, and performance on your own device. The platform documentation alone cannot predict those results.
Touchscreen controls or a physical controller?
Neither input method is universally better. Touch controls avoid carrying or fitting an accessory; a physical controller may feel more comfortable during longer sessions. Your choice also depends on setup effort and whether the controller and games work with your phone.

| Input | Comfort | Portability | Setup and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Touchscreen | No controller to hold, though on-screen controls may be less comfortable for some players. | No additional hardware to carry. | Check whether the emulator and game offer controls that work for you. |
| Physical controller | May be preferable for longer sessions, depending on the controller and player. | Adds hardware to carry; a phone-mounted controller can keep the setup together. | Check connection method and compatibility with both the phone and games; mapping may be needed. |
Android’s controller support and RetroArch’s mapping tools establish that physical input is possible, not that every controller works automatically. If you consider a telescopic phone controller, verify its supported phone-size range and whether it connects using a method your phone supports. No particular model is established as a fit for every device.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “best” and “free” mean in this setup
“Best” depends on what you value: using a device you already own, portability, comfort, and whether it runs your chosen games well. “Cost me nothing” describes my circumstances—the phone was already in the house—not a universal claim that every setup is free. A controller or other accessory is optional, and you may decide you prefer one.
