Yes—you can get line-by-line, Spotify-style lyrics for music you own without using Spotify. The reliable setup is to clean up each track’s metadata, obtain synchronized lyrics, save them either inside the audio file or as a matching .lrc sidecar file, and play the library in an app that supports that storage format while offline.
How synchronized lyrics work
Synchronized lyrics are timestamped text attached to a track. A player reads each timestamp and highlights or scrolls the corresponding line as the song plays. MusicBrainz Picard documents two separate metadata fields: lyrics for ordinary, unsynchronized text and syncedlyrics for synchronized lyrics. Treating those as different fields matters: ordinary lyrics may display as a block, but they do not contain the timing information needed for scrolling.
The other common format is LRC. An LRC file is a plain-text document containing lyric lines with timestamps. Sony’s NW-ZX300 Help Guide instructs users to transfer the LRC text file together with the corresponding music file, which makes LRC a practical, inspectable sidecar format for local collections.
Step 1: Normalize and identify your music
Lyrics matching is only dependable when the player can identify the right track. Start by fixing album, artist, title, disc and track-number metadata before adding lyric files.

- Add the files to MusicBrainz Picard. Picard supports common formats including MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, WMA and WAV.
- Cluster the files. Clustering groups tracks that appear to belong to the same album.
- Run Lookup. Picard can use AcoustID fingerprints, so it may identify audio even when existing tags are incomplete or wrong.
- Inspect the proposed release. If several editions appear, choose the correct regional or deluxe release and verify disc and track assignments.
- Save only after checking the match. Picard’s documented workflow is add, cluster, look up, select the correct release when necessary, then save.
Keep an untouched backup of the library before saving large batches of rewritten tags. A wrong release match can give a track the wrong title, album or lyric association, and correcting that later is more work than checking the candidates first.
Step 2: Decide where the timed lyrics should live
| Storage method | How it works | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embedded synchronized lyrics | Timed lyric data is written into the audio file’s metadata, using a field such as Picard’s syncedlyrics. |
The lyrics travel with the track when you copy or back up the audio file. | Player support for particular embedded tags varies; rewriting tags changes the audio file’s metadata. |
| Sidecar LRC | A text file sits beside the audio file and uses the same base name, such as Track.flac and Track.lrc. |
Easy to inspect, edit, replace and reuse without modifying the audio file. | The LRC must remain beside the matching audio file, and the player must look for that naming and timing format. |
There is no universally reliable choice. If you move music between several players, test both methods with a small copy of the library. Some applications read embedded lyrics but ignore LRC, while others do the opposite or recognize only particular embedded tag conventions.
Step 3: Obtain and prepare synchronized lyrics
Use a lyric source that provides timestamps, not merely a block of text. Preserve the exact track order and check that the lyrics correspond to the recording you tagged—live, radio-edit, remix and album versions can differ.

For embedded storage, write the timed text to the player’s supported synchronized-lyrics field. Picard’s documentation names that field syncedlyrics. For sidecar storage, save the timed text as an LRC file with the same base filename as the audio file. Keep punctuation and line breaks intact while checking the opening, chorus and ending against the recording.
Lyrics are copyrighted in many jurisdictions. A service’s terms may limit downloading, redistribution or embedding, and permission can differ by country and use. Confirm that your source permits the way you plan to store and use the files; owning a song does not automatically grant every lyric-use right.
Step 4: Choose a player that works without a network
Desktop playback
XeroTunes documents fully offline playback, support for embedded lyrics and external .lrc files, and synchronized line-by-line scrolling. Import a test folder, disable the network, and confirm that the player still finds both the audio and lyric data.

Sony’s NW-ZX300 Help Guide documents the LRC workflow: create the LRC text file, then transfer both the LRC and its corresponding music file to the player. Follow the device’s filename and folder requirements exactly; an LRC left in a different folder may not be detected.

- Play a track once with Wi-Fi and cellular data disabled.
- Confirm that lyrics appear at the correct line, not merely as unsynchronized text.
- Skip forward and backward to check that timing stays aligned.
- Test an embedded file and an LRC sidecar if you may use both storage methods.
- Copy a test album to another device or backup location and verify that the lyrics travel with it—or that the sidecar files were copied too.
- Check a track with punctuation, multiple discs and a nonstandard filename before processing the entire collection.
A player that displays lyrics while connected may be fetching them from an online service rather than reading your local files. The offline test distinguishes genuine local support from network-dependent display. Spotify’s support community states that lyrics do not work in Offline Mode; a local library paired with a compatible player avoids that particular dependency.

Common failures and fixes
Lyrics are missing entirely
Check the base filename, extension and folder first. For an LRC workflow, the audio and LRC files must correspond exactly. For embedded lyrics, confirm that the application supports the tag you wrote rather than assuming every player reads every synchronized-lyrics field.
Lyrics appear but do not scroll
You may have stored ordinary lyrics in the lyrics field instead of timed data in syncedlyrics, or the LRC timestamps may be malformed. Open the text file, verify that timestamped lines exist, and test with a known-good copy before re-editing the whole library.

Timing is consistently early or late
Check whether the lyric file belongs to a different edit, remaster or live recording. If every line has the same offset, use a lyric editor that can shift all timestamps together, then retest from the beginning and after a seek.
Only some albums work
Compare their metadata and filenames. Incorrect release matches, disc numbers, alternate artist spellings or inconsistent base names commonly explain why one album is recognized while another is not.
A practical, low-risk rollout
- Back up the original library.
- Choose one album and normalize it in Picard.
- Add synchronized lyrics using either embedded tags or matching LRC files.
- Test that album in the intended player with the network disabled.
- Resolve filename, tag or timing problems before repeating the process.
- Process the remaining albums in batches and preserve the same naming and backup convention.
This staged approach keeps a metadata mistake or unsupported tag from affecting the entire collection and gives you a repeatable offline check before you scale up.
