When an Ethernet link fails, a basic RJ45 network cable tester is often the fastest first check. These pocket-size continuity testers cost about $8 to $15 in current listings, require no app or configuration, and reveal whether a cable’s conductors are connected in the correct order. They will not diagnose a broken switch, DHCP failure, or slow internet service, but they can settle the most common physical-layer question in seconds: is the cable wired correctly?
What this inexpensive tool actually is
An RJ45 cable tester, also called an Ethernet wire-map or continuity tester, consists of a main unit and usually a detachable remote. You plug one end of the cable into the tester and the other end into the remote, then switch it on or press its test button. LEDs illuminate in sequence for each conductor. A matching sequence at both ends indicates that the wires are continuous and terminated in the expected order.
The simplest models have no menus, software, pairing process, or calibration settings. That is why manufacturers describe them as one-touch or LED-operated tools. The entire test is visual: connect the plugs, start the tester, and interpret the lights.
What faults a basic tester can find
- Open conductors: one or more pins have no electrical continuity, often because a wire was not fully seated in the plug or was damaged.
- Short circuits: two conductors are electrically connected where they should be separate.
- Miswiring and crossed pairs: wires reach the wrong pin, including reversed or cross-pinned conductors.
- Split or incorrectly arranged pairs: all pins may appear connected, but the twisted-pair arrangement is unsuitable for reliable Ethernet.
- Bad terminations: an improperly crimped RJ45 plug can be identified before it is installed in a wall or rack.
Some models also accept RJ11 or RJ12 telephone plugs, and a few support BNC connections. A PoE-aware unit can add a power check or identify PoE-related conditions, but that feature is not universal.

- Power Source: DC9V Battery Required (not included)
How to test an RJ45 cable
- Disconnect the cable. Remove it from computers, switches, wall jacks, and any powered network equipment. A simple continuity tester is not a substitute for a live-network diagnostic tool.
- Connect both ends. Insert one RJ45 plug into the tester’s main socket and the other into its remote unit. For a permanently installed run, use short patch leads to connect the tester and remote to the two wall outlets.
- Start the test. Press the test button or move the power switch. On an automatic unit, the LEDs will begin scanning the pins.
- Read the sequence. Compare the numbered LEDs on the main unit with those on the remote. A normal straight-through cable should show the same 1-to-8 order at both ends. Missing, duplicated, or out-of-order lights indicate a wiring fault.
- Confirm a suspected fault. Re-seat each plug and repeat the test. If the same LED remains absent or out of order, replace the patch cable or re-terminate the plug. Test a known-good cable in the same tester first if the result seems impossible.
Why this is useful when Ethernet “is not working”
A dark link light or an adapter that reports “network cable unplugged” can result from a bad cable, a loose plug, a damaged wall jack, or a disabled port. Testing the cable separately removes one variable before you change switch settings or reinstall drivers. It is especially useful after making your own patch leads, moving equipment, or troubleshooting a run that passes through a wall.
The remote is important for installed cabling: it lets you test a long run without standing at both ends simultaneously. Detachable remotes can also help identify which cable is which when several runs terminate in the same cupboard, although a tone generator and probe are better for tracing unlabeled cables.

Current price examples and model differences
Listing prices captured in 2026 range from less than ten dollars for basic units to about thirty dollars for models with additional checks. Currency, stock, shipping, and tax can change the amount you pay.
| Example listing | 2026 listed price | What the listing indicates |
|---|---|---|
| UNITEK OT140A | $7.99 | One-touch operation, LED status display, and detection of opens, shorts, miswires, and shielding. |
| VCELINK LAN tester | $9.99 | Portable LED tester intended for quick Ethernet-cable checks. |
| NOYAFA NF-468S | $29.89 | RJ45/RJ11 plug checks with PoE identification in addition to basic wiring tests. |
| Wentronic RJ11/RJ45 tester | €14.99 RRP | Continuity, short-circuit, reversal, and cable-defect checks. |
Connector support is a practical differentiator. If you only maintain ordinary Ethernet patch cables, an RJ45-only tester is usually sufficient. Technicians who handle telephone cabling may prefer RJ11/RJ12 support, while BNC support matters mainly in older or specialized installations. Also check the manufacturer’s stated maximum cable length, battery type, and whether the remote is detachable before buying; those specifications vary by model and are not interchangeable.

What it cannot tell you
A continuity tester verifies conductors and pin order, not network performance. It does not certify category-rated bandwidth, insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, or compliance with a cabling standard. A cable can pass a simple wire-map test and still fail at higher speeds because of poor-quality cable, excessive length, damaged shielding, or bad installation practices.
It also cannot prove that a live network has a working DHCP server, DNS, switch port, router, or internet connection. If the tester passes but the link remains down, try a known-good cable, inspect the jack and port, check link LEDs, verify the adapter is enabled, and then investigate VLAN, DHCP, DNS, or service problems. A PoE-capable tester can check for power-related conditions, but deeper live-network diagnosis requires equipment designed for that job.

Choosing the right level of tester
- Choose an $8–$15 continuity tester for home repairs, short patch leads, and the question “is this cable wired correctly?”
- Choose a model with a detachable remote and longer stated range when checking installed wall runs or identifying faults between rooms.
- Choose PoE awareness when you install access points, cameras, phones, or other devices powered through Ethernet.
- Choose a cable qualifier or certification tester when you must document performance, validate new structured cabling, or troubleshoot speed and signal-quality failures.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
Testing a cable while it is connected to equipment
Disconnect both ends first. The tester is designed for an unpowered cable; applying network or PoE voltage can produce misleading results or damage a basic unit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAssuming any light pattern is good
Every conductor must appear in the correct order at both units. A sequence with a missing or swapped number is a fault even if some LEDs illuminate.
Blaming the tester for one failed cable
Check the battery, cleanly reseat the plugs, and test a known-good cable. If the known-good cable also fails, replace the battery or tester before re-crimping multiple cables.
Expecting a pass to guarantee gigabit service
Use a network link test or a certified cabling instrument for speed, signal quality, and standards compliance. The inexpensive tester answers only the continuity and wiring question.
