Yes, the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K omits Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Amazon puts both formats on the higher-tier Fire TV Stick 4K Max instead. If your television displays Dolby Vision or your soundbar/receiver uses Dolby Atmos, the base 2026 stick is the wrong replacement, even though it is faster, slimmer and better connected than older models.

What the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K actually supports

Amazon’s third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K (2026), model build AFTCR001, runs Vega OS 2.0. It supports 4K playback with HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, but the published specifications do not list Dolby Vision. Dolby Atmos is also absent from Amazon’s description of this tier.

Specification Fire TV Stick 4K (2026)
Operating system Vega OS 2.0
Processor MediaTek MT8698E quad-core, up to 1.7 GHz
Memory 1 GB RAM
Storage 8 GB
Video formats 4K, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, H.265, H.264, VP9 and AV1
Connections HDMI 2.1 and USB-C 2.0
Wireless Wi-Fi 6
Bluetooth Bluetooth 5.3
Power design Direct USB power and a slimmer stick

That format list is the key buying detail. HDR10 is widely supported, and HDR10+ can provide dynamic HDR on compatible televisions and services. Dolby Vision is a separate format with its own metadata and display requirements; HDR10 support does not substitute for it.

Why Dolby Vision can make or break the purchase

When a title is available in Dolby Vision and the entire playback chain supports it, the television can use Dolby’s dynamic scene-by-scene metadata. A Dolby Vision television connected to a streamer that outputs only HDR10 or HDR10+ may fall back to another HDR version or to standard dynamic range, depending on the app and title. The result is not necessarily a bad picture, but it is not Dolby Vision playback.

The same format-matching issue applies to audio. Dolby Atmos requires compatible content, an app that passes the Atmos soundtrack, and an audio system—such as a soundbar or AV receiver—that can decode it. If Atmos is part of your setup, the base 2026 stick does not provide the feature Amazon advertises for the Max tier.

What Amazon reserves for the Fire TV Stick 4K Max

Amazon describes the Fire TV Stick 4K Max as its option for gamers and home-theater users, with more storage, higher performance and “premium features like Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and Alexa+ Home Theater.” This tiering is why the missing formats are not a minor specification omission: they are being used to separate the two products.

Choose the 4K Max when Dolby Vision or Atmos is a requirement. If your system uses HDR10, HDR10+ or HLG and does not need Atmos, the base stick can be a sensible replacement for an aging device.

Performance and connectivity improvements

The 2026 model adds several practical upgrades. Wi-Fi 6 can improve wireless efficiency on a compatible router, Bluetooth 5.3 supports newer peripherals, and direct USB power can simplify installation where the television provides suitable power. HDMI 2.1 and AV1 decoding help with modern televisions and streaming encodes, while 8 GB of storage leaves room for apps and cached content.

Amazon claims that the stick gets customers to content “nearly 20–40% faster” than a similarly priced 4K stick from another leading brand. It also reports apps launching “over 35% faster” and content starting “nearly 20% faster.” Those figures are Amazon’s own tests, averaged across three 4K smart TVs against a similarly priced competing stick; they are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks. Actual results will vary with network conditions, app versions, television hardware and account setup.

Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K is a relevant comparison because it supports Dolby Vision. Tom’s Guide also identifies the Roku Streaming Stick Plus as a lower-priced competitor, but prices and availability change, so check the current listings rather than relying on an old launch price.

Check your setup before replacing the old stick

  1. Confirm the television’s HDR formats. Look in the television’s picture, signal or input-information screen for Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG support. The model specification or manual is the authoritative source.
  2. Check the audio path. If the streamer connects through a soundbar or AV receiver, verify that the device and its HDMI inputs pass Dolby Atmos. A television that supports Atmos does not guarantee that an older receiver does.
  3. Check the services you use. Not every title or subscription tier offers Dolby Vision or Atmos. Identify whether your regular apps actually use those formats.
  4. Match the replacement to the requirement. Select the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K for HDR10/HDR10+/HLG systems. Select the 4K Max or another confirmed Dolby Vision-capable streamer when Dolby Vision or Atmos is essential.
  5. Allow for installation constraints. The new stick uses USB-C 2.0 for power. Make sure the television’s USB port or included power arrangement can supply stable power; an underpowered port can cause restarts or failed updates.

Vega OS and app availability: what is known

Tom’s Guide’s review of the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Select reported cloud-hosted app dependence and no sideloading on that Select model. Those findings provide context about Amazon’s newer Vega OS direction, but they should not be treated as confirmed behavior of the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K unless Amazon documents the same policy for build AFTCR001. Check the apps you need in the current store before switching from an older Fire TV device.

The practical verdict

For a conventional 4K HDR10 or HDR10+ television, the 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K is a meaningful upgrade: it brings Vega OS 2.0, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, AV1 support, direct USB power and Amazon-claimed speed improvements. For a Dolby Vision television, or an audio system built around Dolby Atmos, those improvements do not compensate for the missing formats. Skip the base model and compare the Fire TV Stick 4K Max with other streamers that explicitly support the formats your home-theater chain requires.
