If a breach notice says your financial or personal information was exposed, first identify exactly what was taken and follow the notice’s response instructions. Then secure affected logins, check existing accounts for unauthorized activity, and consider a credit freeze or fraud alert if sensitive identity information was exposed. A breach does not automatically mean someone has stolen your identity, and no single service prevents every kind of misuse.
What to do first after a breach notice
- Read the notice carefully. Identify which information was involved, when the incident occurred, what action the organization recommends, and whether it offers free credit monitoring, identity monitoring, insurance, or recovery help. The FTC advises using services offered in response to a breach, while checking their actual scope and duration: FTC guidance on what to do after a data breach.
- Secure affected accounts. If a password was exposed, change it on that service and anywhere else you reused it. Use unique passwords for important accounts and enable multifactor authentication where available. The FTC explains why reused or compromised credentials can put other accounts at risk: Understanding Your Credit.
- Check financial activity. Review recent bank, card, and other relevant statements for unfamiliar transactions. If an account may be compromised or you see activity you did not authorize, contact the institution promptly using the number on a card or statement or the institution’s independently verified website—not a link or phone number in an unexpected message.
- Choose credit protections based on the data exposed. If your Social Security number or other identity details were exposed, review your credit reports and consider a freeze or fraud alert. These tools address new-credit fraud, not misuse of an existing bank or card account.
Ten ways a breach can affect your finances—and what to do
These are possible consequences and response needs, not a claim that every breach causes every problem. The right steps depend on the information exposed and whether suspicious activity has appeared.
1. Exposed details can support impersonation attempts
Information from a breach may be used to impersonate you or make fraudulent requests. Treat unexpected calls, texts, and emails about the incident cautiously. Verify the sender using contact information you already trust before sharing account details or identity information.
2. Reused passwords can put other logins at risk
If the exposed data includes login credentials, change that password at the affected service and at every other account where you reused it. Prioritize email, financial, and mobile-provider accounts because access to them can help someone reach other services.

3. Existing accounts may show unauthorized activity
Payment or account information can be misused for unfamiliar charges or withdrawals. Check transaction histories and statements, and contact the financial institution promptly if something is wrong. A credit freeze does not block charges or takeovers involving accounts you already have.
4. Social Security number exposure raises the risk of new-account fraud
If the notice says your Social Security number was exposed, review your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries. You can check reports weekly for free at AnnualCreditReport.com, as IdentityTheft.gov explains. Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert if you want to make it harder for someone to open credit in your name.

5. A credit freeze can restrict access to your credit file
A freeze is free at each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies, and you must place it with each company separately. It can make it harder for a thief to open a new credit account in your name. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says, “Security freezes do not impact your credit scores in any way whatsoever.” A freeze can delay a legitimate credit application until you lift it for the lender; it does not stop account takeover or activity on existing accounts. See the CFPB’s credit-freeze guidance.

6. A fraud alert asks creditors to take an extra verification step
An initial fraud alert lasts one year. You can request it from one nationwide credit reporting company, which must notify the other two. A creditor that checks your credit report must take steps to verify your identity before opening an account. An alert is less restrictive than a freeze, but it is not a barrier to transactions on accounts you already hold. IdentityTheft.gov describes fraud-alert and recovery steps.

7. Monitoring needs to cover more than a credit report
Credit reports can help reveal new-account fraud, while bank, card, and insurance statements may show misuse that a credit freeze cannot prevent. Keep checking the relevant accounts even if you have frozen your credit or enrolled in monitoring.
8. Confirmed fraud requires institution-specific action
If you find a fraudulent account or transaction, contact the affected institution through a verified channel and ask how to report and dispute it. If someone has used your identity, IdentityTheft.gov can generate an FTC Identity Theft Report and a personalized recovery plan. A product or monitoring app cannot substitute for notifying the institution and disputing the specific fraud.

9. Breach-response services vary in what they cover
A notice may offer credit monitoring, identity monitoring, identity theft insurance, or recovery assistance. These are not interchangeable: monitoring can alert you to certain activity, while recovery services may help with response steps. Check what data or events the offer covers, how long it lasts, whether it is free through the breach response, and what happens when the enrollment period ends. Do not assume an offer prevents fraud or covers every loss; the FTC outlines identity-theft service categories.

10. Scammers may pose as helpers
After a breach, a scammer may pretend to be your bank, a government agency, or a recovery service. Do not rely on an unexpected caller’s instructions or use contact details in an unsolicited message. Find the institution’s number on a known statement or card, or type its established website address yourself. The CFPB warns consumers to watch for impersonation scams while responding to identity theft: What to do if you are a victim of identity theft.

Credit freeze or fraud alert: which fits?
| Protection | Scope and setup | Convenience and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Free; request it separately from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies. It restricts prospective creditor access to your credit file. | You may need to lift it when applying for credit. It does not stop takeover or fraudulent charges on existing accounts. |
| Initial fraud alert | Lasts one year; request it from one nationwide credit reporting company, which must notify the other two. Creditors who check your report must take steps to verify your identity. | Less restrictive than a freeze, but it does not block misuse of existing accounts. |
Use a freeze when you want to restrict access to your credit file for new-credit applications. Consider an alert if you prefer to ask creditors to verify applicants without placing a freeze. Neither replaces checking existing accounts. The CFPB explains credit freezes, and IdentityTheft.gov covers fraud alerts.
If you spot an unauthorized bank transfer
Notify your bank or credit union as soon as you find an unauthorized electronic funds transfer. The CFPB describes a general period of ten business days for a financial institution to investigate after notice, but exceptions and other timing rules apply. Your rights and deadlines depend on the transaction and when you report it, so do not wait for a monitoring service to confirm what you already suspect. Follow the institution’s reporting instructions and keep records of your contact and dispute. See the CFPB’s guidance on unauthorized transactions.
When the exposure becomes identity theft
If you confirm that someone used your identity, use IdentityTheft.gov to report it to the FTC and get a personalized recovery plan. The steps can include contacting affected companies, disputing fraudulent accounts or information, and placing credit protections. For U.S. consumers, the FTC’s identity-theft recovery guidance also explains how to proceed. Financial protections and deadlines vary with the type of fraud and how quickly you report it; follow the relevant institution’s instructions and keep copies of notices, reports, and dispute records.
