There is no evidence-backed single “best” MUV for every Indian family. Start with your city’s maximum on-road budget, how often you will use every seat, and whether the third row and luggage space work for your real trips. Then compare the exact variants’ powertrain, safety equipment and local service support.
What counts as an MUV in India?
MUV and MPV are overlapping labels in Indian car listings, not a reliable dividing line for buyers. Maruti Suzuki describes the Ertiga as an MPV on its official site, while third-party listings also group it under MUV. In practical terms, focus on vehicles intended to carry several passengers, often with multiple seating rows, and judge the layout rather than the label.
Seat counts and layouts differ. Mahindra’s 2018 launch release for the Marazzo described both 7- and 8-seat versions, with captain seats in the 7-seater. That is historical information, not confirmation that either version is currently available. The release also described roomy first and second rows, but its comfort claim is manufacturer marketing, not an independent measurement.
Which MUVs fit the budget?
Keep starting prices separate from the amount you need to pay on the road. Registration, insurance, variant choice and applicable offers affect the final quote; the buyer’s city matters too.

A first-time buyer query such as “good 7 seater MUV within 15 lakhs on road” shows why the distinction matters: a budget ceiling must include the local on-road total, not just the advertised starting price. That query is an individual Reddit post, not a representative measure of buyer demand. Ask dealers for a written, city- and variant-specific quotation before deciding whether a model fits.
How many seats and how much luggage do you actually need?
Count regular passengers, not occasional maximum passengers
List who will travel together most often and how frequently the full family will occupy every row. A 7- or 8-seat label does not tell you whether the seats suit your passengers or whether everyone can get in and out comfortably.

Test third-row access and child-seat fit
Take the usual passengers to the showroom or test drive. Practise getting into and out of the third row, and check whether the child seat you use can be installed correctly in the intended position. Mahindra’s historical Marazzo release mentioned ISOFIX child-seat mounts on its launch vehicle; it does not establish current equipment or compatibility across other models. Confirm the exact vehicle’s restraint points, the child seat’s requirements and the permitted installation method.
Check luggage space with the seats in use
Bring representative luggage or measure the items you carry most often. Check capacity with the rows you expect to occupy, because an advertised seating count alone does not answer whether the car can carry both your passengers and their bags.
Which fuel and gearbox suit your driving?
There is no useful segment-wide mileage number: vehicles and powertrains differ, and actual results depend on the exact variant and driving conditions. The current Ertiga manufacturer listing offers petrol and S-CNG versions with manual or automatic transmission. Across the wider category, options may include petrol, diesel, CNG, hybrid and electric powertrains, but availability varies by model and market.
- Consider CNG only if refuelling is practical on your regular routes and the specific model and variant meet your needs.
- Choose a transmission you can use comfortably in your typical traffic and driving conditions; confirm which gearbox is offered with the engine and fuel type you want.
- Check the manufacturer’s claimed efficiency for the exact variant. Treat it as a claim, not a guaranteed real-world result.
- Before paying, confirm the model’s current powertrain choices and prices with the manufacturer or dealer.
How should you compare safety?
Check the current brochure and verify safety equipment for the exact model year and trim. Do not assume that a feature or crash-test result for another variant, an earlier model year or a different vehicle version applies to the one you are buying.

- Confirm the safety equipment listed for your selected trim directly against the current manufacturer information.
- Look for independent crash-test evidence for the exact vehicle and version where available; avoid treating an unverified or non-matching result as a rating for your car.

- Narrow by powertrain and gearbox. Match fuel access and transmission to your driving pattern, then verify the exact variant’s official efficiency claim.
- Verify safety for the precise vehicle. Check current equipment and any independent crash-test evidence for the model, version and year you intend to buy.
- Compare local ownership details. Collect service estimates, insurance quotes and local support information, then take a test drive and obtain a written dealer quote.
