Elon Musk said on October 15, 2026, that SpaceX would reimburse users if Grok Bot makes a purchasing mistake or leaks a payment card. The promise followed reports of a shopping workflow in which Grok can use a photographed credit card to find a deal and place an order. However, Grok Bot’s terms, last updated October 12, say customers are solely responsible for charges and other consequences of the agent’s actions—including actions that were unintended or unauthorized. The public promise does not yet explain which losses qualify, how users would claim reimbursement, or whether it changes the contract.

What Musk promised

At 1:57 a.m. Eastern on October 15, Think Facility recorded Musk’s post on X: “This works well. If Grok @Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole.” UOL also reported the statement and said it followed a user report that Grok had bought an airline ticket from a photograph of a credit card.

“Make you whole” is a broad public assurance, but Musk did not define it. The post does not state whether reimbursement covers the purchase price only, replacement-card costs, airline change fees, fraud losses, missed travel or other consequential damages. It also provides no eligibility requirements, claim form, deadline, evidence standard, payment timetable or spending limit.

How the proposed shopping workflow works

Four days earlier, on October 10, Musk described a process in which a user photographs a credit card, uploads the image in a Grok chat, and asks Grok Bot to shop. His wording, reproduced by Think Facility, was: “To buy stuff, you can just take a picture of your credit card, drop it in the chat and Grok @Bot will scour the Internet for the best deal on the item you want and order it.”

The airline-ticket account illustrates the kind of transaction that prompted the reassurance, but the available reports do not establish a complete product specification. They do not say how widely the feature had rolled out, which countries or account types were eligible, whether every transaction requires confirmation, or how card numbers and security codes are handled and retained. A photograph of a card is sensitive payment information; uploading one gives an automated system access to data that can potentially be copied, misread or exposed.

What Grok Bot’s written terms say

The official Grok Bot Terms are marked “Last updated: October 12, 2026.” They define “agentic actions” broadly. The category includes accessing websites, executing code, sending communications, processing data and interacting with third-party services—activities that can create financial or contractual consequences outside the chat itself.

The terms also warn that agentic actions may be “inaccurate, incomplete, delayed, unsuccessful, or unintended.” Approval and automated-review controls may fail to identify every harmful action, and the controls “do not reverse completed actions.” The terms tell users to conduct human review before financial transactions.

A separate liability clause is even more direct: “CUSTOMER IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL AGENTIC ACTIONS TAKEN BY GROK BOT, WHETHER OR NOT SUCH ACTIONS WERE INTENDED, ANTICIPATED, OR AUTHORIZED BY CUSTOMER.” The provider disclaims losses except to the extent directly caused by gross negligence or willful misconduct.

Does Musk’s post override those terms?

That is unresolved. Musk’s post is broader and less specific than the contract, while the posted terms still assign customers broad responsibility. The sources do not show that the post amended the terms, created a separate reimbursement program, or established an enforceable guarantee. Think Facility reported that the terms were unchanged when reviewed on October 15 and did not predict which text a court would prioritize.

In practical terms, users should treat the post as a public promise rather than as a clearly documented insurance policy. Whether it would cover an unauthorized charge, a wrong item, an incorrect reservation, merchant fraud or losses caused by a missed trip remains unclear. A dispute could also turn on the account’s governing contract, the transaction record and the law applicable to the user’s location.

What users should do before allowing Grok to place an order

  • Require human approval. Do not assume an approval prompt or automated review will catch every error; the terms expressly say those controls may miss harmful actions.
  • Set the narrowest permissions available. Use spending limits and transaction permissions where the product exposes them, and avoid granting broader access than the particular purchase needs.
  • Review the final merchant, amount and destination. Check the order details yourself before a financial transaction is submitted.
  • Avoid uploading a card image unless you accept the exposure. The reported workflow depends on a photograph, but the available material does not establish the system’s retention, masking or deletion practices.
  • Keep records. Save the chat, approval screen, order confirmation, receipts and card statements. Those records would be important for a card dispute or any reimbursement request.

What to do if Grok makes an unauthorized or incorrect purchase

  1. Contact the card issuer immediately through its normal fraud or dispute channel and follow its instructions for securing the account.
  2. Preserve the Grok conversation, timestamps, merchant correspondence, receipts and screenshots showing what you authorized.
  3. Ask the merchant whether the order can be canceled or refunded; the Grok terms warn that completed agentic actions may not be reversible.
  4. Submit a written request to SpaceX or the relevant Grok support channel that identifies the transaction, explains why it was mistaken or unauthorized, and cites Musk’s October 15 reimbursement statement.
  5. Compare any response with the governing Grok terms. A public statement may help explain the request, but the available sources do not establish a guaranteed payout or a formal claims process.

The key questions that remain unanswered

  • What counts as a “mistake” under Musk’s promise?
  • Does “make you whole” include consequential losses, such as missed travel or replacement-card expenses?
  • Does the promise cover transactions a user never authorized, or only errors made after a user approved an order?
  • Which entity pays, from what fund, and under what eligibility and documentation rules?
  • Does the statement apply worldwide and to every Grok Bot account or only to a limited rollout?
  • Will the terms be amended to reflect the reimbursement commitment?

No regulator ruling, court decision or independent audit in the available reporting establishes that Musk’s statement is legally enforceable. The clearest current reading is therefore limited: Musk publicly promised reimbursement on October 15, while Grok’s October 12 terms continue to place extensive responsibility for agentic actions on customers.
