A passing museum-material test is evidence about a particular sample, target, method, and set of conditions—not a universal certificate that the material is harmless. It may help assess one kind of collection-material interaction, but it does not automatically establish compatibility with every object or protection from hazardous exposure. Interpret the result in light of how the material will be used.
What a museum-material test pass establishes
A test result answers a bounded question: what effect did the tested sample have on the test’s targets under the stated conditions? The Canadian Conservation Institute cautions that “a passing score from a standardized test may not guarantee that the material is completely harmless.” Its Oddy test guidance concerns potential corrosion of specific metals, not every possible interaction with a museum object.
That distinction matters because “safe” can refer to two different things: compatibility with collection materials, or protection of people from exposure to hazardous substances. A materials compatibility screen does not answer every human-health question, and a negative contaminant result does not prove that a sample contains no hazardous material.

The Oddy test is an accelerated corrosion screen used to assess materials considered for museum use. In the Swedish National Heritage Board’s described method, a sample is sealed with water and coupons of copper, silver, and lead, then kept at 60°C for 28 days before visual assessment. The page categorizes outcomes as Pass (no effect), Temporary (minor effect), and Fail (major effect). The authority’s guidance describes that protocol; individual laboratories may use variants, so check the method behind any reported result.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A result is qualitative: it records observed effects on the test coupons. It does not identify which substance caused corrosion or how much of it was present. If the cause or concentration matters, additional analytical methods are needed. Nor does an outcome on copper, silver, and lead establish that a material will not affect other metals, paper, photographs, plastics, coatings, or object surfaces.
Why a negative contaminant result can still leave a hazard
Testing is selective. A protocol may target commonly used preservation chemicals rather than every possible chemical, and a substance can be present below the test’s limit of detection. The U.S. Department of the Interior FAQ answers “If an item tests negative for a contaminant, could it still pose a hazard?” with yes. It also notes that sampling covers tested material rather than necessarily measuring an object’s total contaminant content. The FAQ was last revised February 13, 2006; its testing cautions should not be treated as current regulatory advice.

A negative result therefore means the target was not detected in the sample under that protocol—not that no hazardous substance exists. Interpreting health risk from qualitative or quantitative sample results can be difficult. The Department of the Interior recommends consulting a conservation scientist and industrial hygienist when risk interpretation is needed or a laboratory is unfamiliar with museum-object samples.

How to judge whether a result applies to your use
Before relying on a pass or negative result, establish what question the test actually answered. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s overview of museum-material testing describes a range from simple screening to specialized laboratory measurements. Its guidance notes that the Oddy test and photographic activity testing require four weeks of incubation; these are options to consider with conservation expertise, not universal protocols for every material or hazard.

- Target: Identify the effect assessed, such as corrosion of specified metals or a particular contaminant. A method cannot establish effects it was not designed to detect.
- Sample and coverage: Ask what portion was tested and whether it represents the material or object. A heterogeneous object may contain areas not represented by a sample.
- Conditions and duration: Confirm temperature, humidity, exposure setup, and incubation period. A result applies to the reported conditions, not every storage or display environment.
- Outcome type: Determine whether the finding is visual and qualitative, or instrument-derived and quantitative. Ask whether the method identifies an effect alone or also its cause and concentration.
- Object and use context: Consider the sensitive materials involved, whether contact is direct, whether the material is enclosed or in open space, and whether use is temporary or long-term. The Swedish National Heritage Board says the result must be interpreted in light of intended use.
- People and exposure: If workers or visitors could be exposed, assess that separately from collection compatibility; a corrosion screen is not a human toxicity test.
Practical next steps when the evidence is incomplete
Use a result as one part of a decision, not as a stand-alone declaration of safety. When collection compatibility is uncertain, ask a qualified conservator or conservation scientist whether the test’s targets and conditions fit the object and intended placement. When a possible health hazard is involved, follow current institutional safety procedures and consult an industrial hygienist. For natural history objects, the Canadian Conservation Institute advises using appropriate protective equipment unless testing or original preparator information establishes that hazardous materials are absent. Its natural history guidance provides that precaution.
No population-level rate is established for how often a laboratory pass later proves unsafe. The useful question is narrower: what sample, target, method, conditions, and use does this particular result cover—and what risks remain outside that scope?
