Munshi is best understood as a proposed local AI clerk, not a verified phone-order service. Public projects using the name document voice-led shop management—such as recording sales, checking stock and tracking customer credit—but the inspected examples do not show a system that answers inbound calls or captures customer orders.
What the public Munshi projects actually document
Two separate public projects use the name Munshi. Their documented features concern shop operations, not a complete customer-facing telephone workflow.
OpenClaw project for kirana shops
One project describes itself as a “Voice-first AI assistant for Indian kirana stores and small marts.” Its README lists voice commands for sales and expense recording, customer credit, inventory and shelf-location lookups, and daily sales summaries. For example, “Maggi kahan hai?” asks where a product is located, while “Chawal kitna bacha hai?” asks how much rice remains. These are shop-owner commands, not evidence of customer order calls. A separate Munshi mobile project lists Hindi voice and text chat, stock management, transactions, analytics and barcode lookup. Its feature list likewise does not document a telephone receptionist or order-taking flow. Mobile Munshi project README

Does Munshi answer business phone calls and take orders?
That capability is not established by the inspected project documentation. Neither README describes a public phone number, carrier or SIP connection, call routing, inbound-call handling, customer-facing menu, order capture, payment, or order confirmation. It would be inaccurate to say that either project already answers callers or integrates orders with a point-of-sale system.
The documented voice commands show how a shopkeeper might interact with shop data. They do not show how a caller would place an order, how the system would confirm an item or quantity, or what happens when it misunderstands a name, variant, address or availability.

Does “local” mean every part works offline?
No. “Offline-first” and “local LLM” describe aspects of the projects, not proof that the entire voice pipeline runs on the device without an internet connection or external processing.
OpenClaw project
The project calls its design offline-first and describes an offline NLP fallback, but setup also asks for an Anthropic API key. That combination does not establish that every AI or voice task works offline. OpenClaw Munshi project README

Mobile project
The mobile README lists Ollama for local LLM inference and also requires a Sarvam AI API key for voice features. It does not specify exactly which audio-processing steps happen on-device. A local language model therefore should not be treated as proof that speech recognition and speech generation are fully local. Mobile Munshi project README
What hardware is documented—and what it does not provide
The OpenClaw README lists a Raspberry Pi 4 or Android phone as hardware options and includes a Raspberry Pi sample build. Its sample components are a Raspberry Pi 4B with 4GB of memory, a ReSpeaker 2-Mic HAT, a 3W speaker, a 32GB SD card, power supply, case and LEDs. The README gives an approximate total of ₹7,100. These are repository-authored estimates, not independently checked current prices or a turnkey phone-order design. OpenClaw Munshi project README

The listed hardware does not establish a way to receive public telephone calls: the README does not list a telephone interface, modem, SIP gateway or call-routing service. A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB can be considered optional local-compute prototype hardware, but the board alone is not a verified path to phone connectivity. Before buying components, check board revisions, audio compatibility, power needs, availability and current prices.

- Call path: Does the business number route to an on-premises device, a cloud provider or both? What telephony hardware or service makes calls reach the system?
- Processing location: Where do speech recognition, language-model responses and text-to-speech run? Does caller audio leave the premises, and what functions stop if the internet connection drops?
- Order safety: Does the assistant repeat the item, variant, quantity, delivery details and availability back to the caller before submitting anything? How can a caller correct a mistake?
- Human fallback: Can callers reach a person, and what happens if the assistant cannot understand the request or a service goes offline?
- Data handling: Are calls recorded or transcribed? Who can access recordings and order transcripts, how long are they retained, and how can a caller learn what is being collected?
- Real-world fit: Which languages are supported, and how does the system handle background noise, accents, interruptions and product names?
- Full cost: Add hardware, telephony, connectivity, cloud or API usage, installation and ongoing support. The documented prototype component estimate does not include a verified telephone-order service.
These are deployment checks, not claims that a particular legal rule or product behavior has been established for Munshi.
Why hosted receptionist disclosures are worth checking
A separate UK small-business AI receptionist, Monshi, illustrates the kinds of data and service dependencies a hosted phone system may disclose. Its privacy policy says it collects caller phone numbers, call recordings, automatically generated transcripts and information callers share. It names Retell AI for voice interaction, OpenAI via Retell for responses, and Telnyx for phone numbers and call routing. The policy, updated 15 July 2026, states default retention of 30 days for call recordings and 12 months for transcripts. Monshi’s terms describe a hosted receptionist that answers, converses, takes a message and sends it to a business; they also say it is not intended for emergency or high-security or regulated call handling. This is a useful reminder to check any service’s boundaries and human escalation path, not evidence that Munshi has the same features or limitations. Monshi terms

What is not yet established
The inspected material consists mainly of project READMEs, which describe what their owners say the software supports. It does not independently establish implementation quality, deployment security, order accuracy, customer outcomes or performance in noisy calls. No independent performance study or named statistic for this exact phone-order clerk is established by these sources.
For now, Munshi is a useful concept to evaluate against shop-management examples, but its public documentation does not establish a working inbound phone-order system. Treat call handling, end-to-end local processing and order reliability as questions to validate—not features to assume.
