Choose Munin for straightforward Linux host monitoring and long-term trend graphs; choose Cacti for SNMP-heavy network monitoring, device discovery, reusable templates, graph organization, and multiple operators. Munin’s master-and-node model and small executable plugins keep collection approachable. Cacti’s device objects, templates, queries, access controls, and distributed collectors fit estates of switches, routers, interfaces, and other network devices. The right choice depends more on what you monitor and who operates it than on a universal performance advantage.

What Munin and Cacti are designed to monitor

Both projects store time-series data in RRDtool-based round-robin databases and turn measurements into historical graphs, but they start from different assumptions.

Munin: host and plugin oriented

Munin uses a master-node architecture. The master connects to configured nodes on a schedule, asks each node for plugin configuration and current values, writes the results to RRD files, checks values against configured limits, and produces graphs. In newer configurations, graph generation can occur when a graph is requested rather than only on a fixed generation schedule.

A Munin node runs plugins. Each plugin is a small executable that gathers one type of data about a host and presents it in a format Munin can graph, as the Munin plugin documentation puts it. A plugin can read local operating-system counters, query an application, or fetch values from a remote machine through SNMP. Plugins return metadata when called with config and metric values when called without arguments.

This design is useful when your inventory is primarily Linux or Unix servers and you want CPU, memory, disk, process, filesystem, database, and application measurements in a consistent set of host pages. Wildcard plugins let one script serve many similarly named resources: the same executable can be linked under resource-specific names, with the name identifying the interface, mount point, or other instance. Administrators who can write a small script can therefore add a focused metric without designing a database schema or a web application.

Cacti: device, network, and template oriented

Cacti describes itself as an open-source network monitoring and graphing platform built on RRDtool. Its central objects are devices, data sources, graph templates, data queries, and graph trees. Cacti can poll local or remote systems, with particular strength in SNMP collection, then apply reusable templates to create data sources and graphs consistently.

The project documents SNMP versions 1, 2, and 3, IPv6 support, automated device discovery, ICMP/TCP/UDP availability checks, automatic graph and data-source creation, role-based access control, a plugin framework, and dynamic graph viewing and export. Those capabilities make it natural to represent a fleet of switches, routers, firewalls, printers, wireless controllers, power equipment, and servers that expose management counters through SNMP.

Munin vs Cacti at a glance

Decision area Munin Cacti
Primary orientation Host metrics collected through small plugins Network and device metrics organized around devices, templates, and data queries
Typical collection path Master polls Munin nodes; nodes run plugins; plugins may query local services or SNMP Collectors poll devices and data sources using SNMP and availability protocols, with local and remote collection supported
Configuration style Text configuration, node definitions, plugin links, and plugin metadata Web-managed devices, templates, data sources, graph trees, and queries
SNMP coverage Available through plugins, including plugins that fetch remote SNMP data Core workflow, including SNMP v1/v2/v3 and IPv6
Discovery and provisioning New plugins are discovered after a node restart; hosts must be listed in the master configuration Automated device discovery and automatic graph/data-source creation are documented features
Multi-user administration Reviewed documentation emphasizes node allow/deny controls and configuration Role-based access control plus role, group, and domain management are documented
Large or distributed estates Simple master/node footprint is attractive when one collection path is sufficient Distributed and fault-tolerant collection is a documented design goal
Customization Write or adapt a small executable plugin for a numeric metric Combine data sources, templates, queries, collectors, and plugins
Best initial fit Small or medium Linux server estates needing broad system trends Network-heavy environments needing repeatable device monitoring and operator-level views

How the collection models differ

Munin’s polling cycle

  1. Add each monitored host as a node in the master configuration.
  2. Restrict which masters may connect to a node with its allow/deny controls.
  3. Install and enable the plugins that provide the metrics you need.
  4. Restart the node so it discovers newly available plugins.
  5. During a poll, the master asks a plugin for its configuration when it needs field names, units, labels, and limits, then asks for current values.
  6. Store the returned values in RRD files and render the corresponding graphs.

The model is deliberately transparent: a failed metric is usually traceable to a node connection, a plugin executable, its permissions, or the command that supplies its value. That simplicity is a strength for administrators who prefer configuration files and scripts, but a large inventory of unlike devices can require more manual naming and plugin management.

Cacti’s device and template workflow

  1. Create or discover a device and specify how it can be reached.
  2. Select the protocol and credentials appropriate to the device, such as SNMP v2c or SNMP v3, and configure availability checks where useful.
  3. Apply a device template that describes the kinds of data the device exposes.
  4. Use data queries to enumerate repeatable resources such as interfaces, then create data sources and graph instances from the results.
  5. Place graphs into graph trees or other navigation structures so operators can find sites, devices, and interfaces consistently.
  6. Assign roles, groups, or domains so each operator sees the devices and actions appropriate to their job.

This approach takes more conceptual setup than enabling a single host plugin, but the work can be reused. Once a template and query are correct for a device family, adding another unit does not require hand-building every interface graph.

Which tool is easier to configure?

When Munin feels easier

Munin is usually quicker for a server administrator who wants standard operating-system graphs and is comfortable editing configuration files. A plugin has a narrow contract: describe fields when invoked with config, and emit values otherwise. A custom shell, Perl, Python, or other executable can follow that contract and immediately become part of the host’s graph set.

The trade-off is that Munin’s simplicity does not remove inventory work. Every node must be declared to the master, access must be limited correctly, and a newly installed plugin is not available until the node has been restarted. Naming, permissions, timeouts, and the remote command used by a plugin remain your responsibility.

When Cacti’s interface pays off

Cacti is more structured because it models devices, templates, data sources, queries, and graph navigation separately. That structure is valuable when several people add devices or when every switch in a class should produce the same interface, CPU, memory, and availability graphs. Templates and queries prevent a growing installation from becoming a collection of one-off graph definitions.

The learning curve is correspondingly higher. You need to understand the relationship between a device, its credentials, a template, a query, a data source, an RRA, and the graph tree where the result appears. Once those relationships are established, web administration and automatic creation can be faster than maintaining many individual plugin links.

SNMP: the deciding factor for network monitoring

If most of your important measurements come from network equipment, Cacti has the more direct fit. SNMP polling is a core Cacti workflow, and the project documents support for versions 1, 2, and 3. IPv6 support matters when management addresses are not limited to IPv4. Device discovery and interface-oriented data queries reduce the amount of manual work required for a switch or router with many ports.

Munin can still collect SNMP values through plugins. That is practical for a small number of devices or for an organization that already has Munin conventions and only needs a few network counters. It is less natural when you need to discover hundreds of interfaces, apply vendor-specific templates, delegate access by team, and browse graphs by site and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever tool you choose, treat SNMP credentials and reachability as production security concerns. Prefer SNMPv3 where the device and your operational policy support it, restrict management traffic to collector addresses, and separate read-only monitoring credentials from configuration credentials. A graphing system should not need write access to the network devices it observes.

Multi-user access and operational ownership

Munin’s documented controls focus on which masters may reach a node and how the monitoring configuration is defined. That is enough for a team-owned server dashboard, especially when the same administrators manage the hosts and the monitoring service.

Cacti documents role-based access control and management of roles, groups, and domains. Those controls are useful when a network operations group, server team, help desk, and external customer must see different portions of the same installation. Build the access model before importing a large inventory; retrofitting permissions after graphs and trees are created is harder than assigning ownership as devices arrive.

Scale, distributed collection, and what is not known

Cacti’s homepage says its collection framework is fully distributed and fault tolerant and describes use cases ranging “from LAN-sized installations up to complex networks with tens of thousands of devices.” That is a project capability statement, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every hardware, polling interval, template, and retention policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Munin is attractive when a simpler master-and-node footprint is sufficient. Its operational cost is often easier to reason about because each host contributes plugins and the master stores their RRD data. As the number of nodes, plugins, and remote devices grows, you should model polling intervals, graph counts, storage, and failure handling rather than assume either product will scale automatically.

No authoritative head-to-head measurement establishes CPU usage, memory usage, polling throughput, or alert latency for Munin versus Cacti. Do not select one based on an invented percentage. If those metrics matter, build a pilot with your actual plugins, SNMP timeouts, graph count, retention periods, and collector hardware.

Deployment requirements and version-sensitive dependencies

A Munin deployment needs a master, one or more nodes, enabled plugins, RRD storage, and a web-server configuration that serves the generated graphs. Plan network access from the master to each node, restrict node access, and allocate storage for the retention periods you intend to keep.

Cacti’s published dependency matrix lists MariaDB or MySQL, PHP, RRDtool, and Net-SNMP. The exact requirements vary between the stable 1.2.x branch and the development 1.3.x branch, so verify the matrix for the branch you will install before preparing a server. Database, PHP, RRDtool, and Net-SNMP versions should be treated as compatibility constraints, not assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-installation checklist

  • List every host, network device, interface class, and application metric you intend to collect.
  • Decide whether collection crosses firewalls, management VLANs, or IPv6-only segments.
  • Choose retention periods and estimate RRD and database storage.
  • Define who can administer devices, who can view graphs, and who responds to failures.
  • Record the exact software branch and operating-system packages you will support.
  • Prepare backups for configuration, credentials, graph definitions, and the data stores.

Practical rollout plan for Munin

  1. Build the master. Install the Munin master, RRD storage, and the web-server integration required to publish graphs.
  2. Install nodes on target hosts. Keep node versions and plugin packages consistent where possible.
  3. Declare nodes centrally. Add each host to the master configuration with the address and identity it will use for polling.
  4. Lock down access. Configure node allow/deny rules so only intended masters can connect.
  5. Enable baseline plugins. Start with CPU, memory, filesystem, disk, process, and network metrics, then add application-specific plugins.
  6. Validate the plugin contract. Run a plugin in configuration mode and normal value mode, confirm units and field names, and check that numeric output is stable.
  7. Restart and verify discovery. A node restart is required for newly available plugins to be discovered.
  8. Check limits and graphs. Confirm that configured limits match your operating thresholds and that RRD files receive current values.
  9. Document ownership. Record custom scripts, permissions, external commands, and the person responsible for maintaining each plugin.

Practical rollout plan for Cacti

  1. Confirm the branch matrix. Select a supported Cacti branch and install compatible MariaDB/MySQL, PHP, RRDtool, and Net-SNMP versions.
  2. Prepare the database and web service. Apply the project’s installation procedure for the chosen branch, including database credentials and PHP settings.
  3. Define collector reachability. Ensure collectors can reach device management addresses over the required SNMP and availability-check protocols.
  4. Add a representative device. Test one switch, router, server, or other target before importing an entire site.
  5. Choose credentials and protocol versions. Use the least privilege necessary and prefer authenticated, encrypted SNMPv3 where supported.
  6. Apply a device template. Use the template that matches the vendor and model, or create a controlled template for an unsupported device family.
  7. Run data queries. Enumerate interfaces or other repeatable resources, then inspect the returned indexes and labels before creating graphs.
  8. Create and organize graphs. Generate data sources and graph instances, then place them into graph trees organized by site, customer, device, or service.
  9. Set access roles. Create groups and domains before granting operators access to production graphs.
  10. Test failure behavior. Disconnect a test device or block polling from a collector and verify that the resulting status is understandable to operators.
  11. Expand gradually. Add a site or device class at a time, watching poll duration, storage growth, and collector queues.

Common failure modes and fixes

Munin shows no graph for a plugin

  • Confirm the plugin is enabled under the expected resource name.
  • Run it in config mode and check for valid field definitions, labels, units, and limits.
  • Run it normally and verify that every declared field returns a numeric value.
  • Check executable permissions, the account used by the node, and access to any local socket, file, or remote command.
  • Restart the node so it can discover a newly installed plugin, then inspect the master’s polling output.

A Munin node is unreachable

  • Check routing and firewall rules from the master to the node.
  • Verify that the node’s allow/deny rules include the master’s actual source address.
  • Confirm the node service is running and listening on the expected interface.
  • Use a test host or temporary rule to distinguish network reachability from an access-control error, then remove the temporary access.

Cacti creates a device but no data

  • Verify the management address, SNMP version, community or user credentials, and permitted source addresses.
  • Test a simple OID or availability check before troubleshooting templates.
  • Confirm that the selected template matches the device and that its data query returns indexes.
  • Check collector reachability, timeout settings, and poller status before rebuilding graphs.

Cacti has graphs but the interface list is wrong

  • Inspect the data-query results for duplicate, missing, or unstable indexes.
  • Correct the device template or query before creating more graphs.
  • Remove obsolete graph instances only after confirming that the underlying interface was actually retired.

Graphs are correct but operators cannot find them

  • Review graph-tree placement and naming conventions.
  • Check role, group, and domain permissions separately from device status.
  • Give operators a small test account and verify the complete path from login to the graph they need.

When running both tools is justified

Using both can make sense when responsibilities are genuinely different: Munin can provide detailed, scriptable host and application metrics for Linux teams while Cacti provides SNMP-led network inventory, interface graphs, and delegated access for network operations. Keep ownership boundaries explicit. Decide which system is authoritative for each metric, avoid polling the same endpoint unnecessarily, and budget for two upgrade paths, two backup procedures, and two sets of operational knowledge.

Do not deploy both merely because each can draw a graph. A small team may gain more reliability from one well-maintained platform than from duplicating collection, storage, permissions, and troubleshooting.

A decision framework for your environment

Choose Munin when most answers are “yes”

  • Your monitored estate is mainly Linux or Unix servers.
  • You want broad host metrics and long-term trends with limited web administration.
  • Your team is comfortable enabling plugins and writing small scripts.
  • You have one monitoring group or a simple access model.
  • Network-device monitoring is occasional rather than the central requirement.

Choose Cacti when most answers are “yes”

  • Switches, routers, interfaces, and SNMP-visible appliances dominate the inventory.
  • You need SNMP v1/v2/v3, IPv6 management, or protocol-based availability checks.
  • Device discovery, templates, and data queries can save repeated configuration.
  • Operators need graph trees, role-based access, groups, or domains.
  • Distributed collectors and a network-oriented growth path matter.

Run a pilot when the answer is mixed

Use a representative sample rather than a synthetic test: several Linux hosts, at least one device family with many interfaces, your real polling intervals, expected retention, and the credentials policy you will enforce. Measure collector load, storage growth, poll completion time, graph usability, and the effort required to add a new host or device. Treat those observations as environment-specific; neither project’s documentation supplies a universal performance comparison.

Bottom line

Munin is the better default for a small or medium Linux estate that needs simple, scriptable collection and dependable trend graphs. Cacti is the stronger choice for network-heavy monitoring where SNMP, discovery, templates, graph organization, role-based access, and distributed collection are central. Select based on inventory, administration model, and operating workflow—not on an unsupported claim that one is universally faster.
