For a flat, accessible document, multispectral imaging (MSI) is usually the first specialist method to evaluate. It photographs the item under ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelengths so faded, erased, overwritten, abraded, or chemically altered writing can be separated from the paper or parchment. X-ray scanning is the stronger choice when writing is inside a rolled, sealed, charred, or otherwise three-dimensional object that cannot safely be opened. Phase-contrast X-ray tomography can reconstruct those internal layers for virtual unrolling. Neither method guarantees a readable result: success depends on the contrast between writing and its substrate, the object’s geometry, damage, calibration, processing, and conservation limits. In difficult cases, MSI and X-ray methods are complementary rather than competing choices.
What the two methods actually measure
Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging
MSI records reflected or fluorescent responses at several selected wavelengths, commonly extending from ultraviolet through infrared. A camera system captures a stack of registered images, often called an image cube. Software can combine bands, subtract one band from another, or enhance a narrow spectral range in which ink differs from the surrounding material.
The National Archives describes MSI as a non-invasive technique that captures an object across different wavelengths from ultraviolet to infrared. The Library of Congress uses hyperspectral imaging in an integrated preservation system with 16 spectral bands (Library of Congress project page, accessed 2026). Those bands can expose differences that an ordinary colour photograph hides.

Different inks may have different spectral signatures, even when they look identical in visible light. That makes it possible to distinguish writing added at different times, separate ink from mould or abrasion, and reveal underdrawings or erased annotations. Palimpsests are a classic example: the later text and the scraped or washed-away earlier text may respond differently at particular wavelengths.

MSI is contactless and can be non-destructive when lighting, exposure, handling, and environmental controls follow conservation protocols. It does not create legibility by itself, however. If the ink and substrate have nearly identical spectral behaviour, or if damage overwhelms the signal, no choice of software can recover information that was not captured.
X-ray radiography, tomography, phase contrast, and XRF
“X-ray scanning” covers several different techniques. Projection radiography produces a two-dimensional absorption image. Computed tomography (CT or micro-CT) acquires many projections and reconstructs three-dimensional density. Phase-contrast tomography detects changes in the phase of the X-ray wave and can reveal very small boundaries. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) maps elemental signatures and is useful when an ink contains elements that differ from the support.
Conventional absorption contrast can be weak when ink and parchment or paper have similar composition. In that situation, phase contrast, elemental contrast such as XRF, or high-resolution micro-CT may be required. The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library notes that text well below the parchment surface, or text obscured by other material, may need XRF imaging.
The major advantage of tomography is geometry. It can probe layers that are hidden from both sides of a page, including tightly rolled or sealed objects. In a 2015 Nature Communications study, phase-contrast X-ray tomography (XPCT) of Herculaneum papyri achieved 100 micrometres of spatial resolution in each of three dimensions and revealed letters inside unopened rolls. The process preserved the physical integrity of the papyri.

| Information geometry | Primarily surface and near-surface contrast on a flat, accessible page | Internal layers, rolled or sealed objects, and three-dimensional structure |
| Contrast mechanism | Different responses of ink, substrate, and damage at selected light wavelengths | Differences in density, X-ray phase shift, elemental composition, or reconstructed geometry |
| Typical strengths | Faded, erased, overwritten, abraded, foxed, or chemically altered text; many palimpsests | Charred or tightly rolled scrolls, writing hidden inside layers, and objects unsafe to open |
| Capture burden | Calibrated camera, controlled illumination, spectral registration, and image processing | Specialist source and detector, dose planning, tomography, segmentation, and virtual unrolling |
| Access profile | Portable and laboratory systems exist; lower-cost portable development has been pursued | Usually requires a specialist laboratory, synchrotron, or high-end micro-CT facility |
| Main failure mode | Ink and substrate have too little spectral difference, or damage overwhelms the signal | Ink and substrate have too little absorption, phase, or elemental difference; reconstruction is difficult |
| Conservation issue | No physical contact or opening, but illumination and exposure still need protocols | Non-destructive demonstrations exist, but X-ray dose and possible material effects require explicit review |
When MSI is the right first test
Faded or chemically altered writing
Ink that has faded in visible light may still absorb or fluoresce differently in ultraviolet or infrared. A calibrated sequence can therefore make strokes stand out against a yellowed, foxed, or darkened page. The useful result may be a single band, a ratio between bands, or a composite that suppresses the background.
Erased, scraped, and overwritten text
Erasure does not always remove all traces of the original writing. Scraping changes the surface, residual ink may remain in fibres, and a later text may use a different formulation. MSI can expose those differences without lifting the page or applying chemicals. It is particularly valuable for palimpsests and documents with annotations written over earlier entries.
Abrasion, mould, and stains
Damage can resemble ink in an ordinary photograph. Because mould, abrasion, and writing often have different spectral behaviour, multispectral processing can separate them. The separation is probabilistic rather than automatic: an apparent stroke must be checked against other bands and the physical page.
Flat, accessible objects
MSI is most practical when both the target area and the page surface can be seen by the camera. The item does not need to be flattened aggressively; a conservator should decide how much opening is safe. If the writing lies deep below the surface or is blocked by another layer, MSI may not reach it, and an elemental or X-ray method becomes a more appropriate escalation.

When X-ray scanning is the better choice
Rolled and sealed documents
A scroll can hide writing on the inside of multiple turns. Opening it mechanically may tear, crumble, or permanently distort the material. X-ray tomography records the internal structure while the scroll remains closed. Computational algorithms then identify layers and map them into a virtual, flattened view.
Charred papyri and other fragile objects
The Herculaneum papyri are the clearest documented case. They were carbonized and too fragile to unroll. Phase-contrast tomography exposed Greek letters in the interior of unopened rolls, while computational virtual unrolling produced readable surfaces without the damage associated with physical unrolling. The National Endowment for the Humanities describes the scrolls as having been unreadable for more than two centuries before such computerized techniques were applied.
Writing beneath the visible surface
If text is materially separated from the surface, ordinary illumination may never reveal it. XRF can be useful when the ink contains a detectable element, while phase contrast or micro-CT can reveal boundaries and folds that absorption imaging misses. The correct modality depends on the ink and support composition, not merely on the object’s age.
Three-dimensional structure
Tomography also helps when the item has folds, layered repairs, inserts, or other geometry that makes a single surface image misleading. Reconstruction is computationally demanding, and a three-dimensional scan is not automatically a readable page; segmentation and virtual unrolling remain necessary.

Is X-ray better for palimpsests?
Not in every case. A flat palimpsest with accessible pages is usually an MSI candidate because the principal problem is differentiating inks and surface damage by wavelength. The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library’s palimpsest work uses MSI and identifies XRF as an escalation when the earlier writing is deep below the parchment or obscured by other material.
X-ray methods become more compelling when the palimpsest is folded, rolled, sealed, or structurally inaccessible. They can also add information that light-based images cannot, such as elemental maps or internal layer geometry. The choice should be based on where the writing is located and what physical contrast is available, rather than on a blanket ranking of the technologies.
Can a scroll be read without unrolling it?
Yes, in demonstrated cases. Phase-contrast X-ray tomography has revealed many Greek letters and some words inside rolled Herculaneum papyri while leaving the rolls unopened. The technique is not a universal guarantee: the ink must produce sufficient absorption, phase, or elemental contrast, the scan must resolve the relevant layers, and software must separate overlapping turns and folds. A different scroll, ink, or degree of charring may require another X-ray modality or may remain partly unreadable.
Will scanning damage a fragile historical document?
MSI risk profile
MSI does not require contact, scraping, sampling, or opening. Conservation staff still control illumination intensity, exposure duration, heat, humidity, and handling. “Non-destructive” describes the method when operated within those limits; it is not permission to ignore an object’s condition report.

X-ray risk profile
Published X-ray demonstrations, including the Herculaneum work, are non-destructive in the sense that the object was not opened or physically altered. X-rays nevertheless deliver a dose, and dose tolerance can depend on material, energy, repetition, and the planned number of projections. A conservator and an imaging specialist should assess those factors before a scan, document the decision, and avoid exploratory exposures that are not justified by the expected information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical workflow for a conservator or archive
- Record condition and restrictions. Photograph the object in its current state, note folds, tears, soot, mould, loose media, and previous treatments, and define handling and opening limits. Do not flatten or open a fragile item merely to see whether a camera can read it.
- Define the target geometry. Decide whether the writing is on an exposed surface, beneath a thin layer, inside a fold, or in a roll. Geometry often determines the first modality more reliably than the apparent darkness of the text.
- Choose a first modality. For a flat and accessible page, plan MSI or hyperspectral capture. For internal, rolled, sealed, or charred writing, consult an X-ray tomography or XRF specialist. If both surface and internal targets exist, plan complementary examinations.
- Calibrate MSI capture. Use controlled illumination, a calibrated camera response, consistent focus and geometry, and spectral registration so each band aligns with the others. Record the lighting, filters or bands, exposure settings, and calibration references with the object identifier.
- Process without discarding originals. Preserve every raw band and its metadata. Create derivative composites, band differences, and other enhancements as separate files, retaining the exact processing parameters so another scholar can reproduce the view.
- Plan the X-ray examination. Select absorption radiography, phase-contrast tomography, micro-CT, or XRF according to the expected material contrast and required resolution. Have the facility review dose, positioning, scan time, and whether the object can be transported safely.
- Reconstruct internal writing. For tomography, correct and reconstruct the projections, segment the document layers, and generate virtual surfaces. Treat segmentation and flattening choices as part of the interpretation, not as invisible technical steps.
- Validate readings. Compare a proposed letter or word across independent spectral bands, projections, or modalities. Have conservators and manuscript specialists check the result against the physical object, historical language, scribal practice, and areas where the image predicts no writing.
Why processing and provenance matter
Recovered text is an interpretation of measurements, not a direct photograph of an intact page. A dramatic composite can hide clipping, registration errors, or an algorithm that amplifies repeating damage patterns. Keep the raw captures, calibration data, object condition, instrument settings, processing code or parameter lists, and file checksums together with the published derivative.
For MSI, record which bands were combined or subtracted and whether the display was contrast-stretched. For X-ray work, retain reconstruction settings, segmentation masks, virtual-unrolling parameters, and uncertainty notes. Publishing both the enhanced image and an audit trail lets other scholars test whether a reading survives a different processing choice.

Common failure modes and what to do next
| Symptom | Likely cause | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| No writing appears in any MSI composite | The ink and substrate have too little spectral difference, or the target is deeper than the light can probe | Review calibration and registration, test other relevant bands, then consider XRF or an X-ray modality if the geometry is subsurface |
| Stains look like convincing letters | Mould, abrasion, fibres, or uneven illumination share a similar pattern | Check whether the mark persists across independent bands and matches the physical surface; have a manuscript specialist review it |
| Only some strokes are recovered | Ink formulation, fading, or damage varies across the page | Report the readable and unreadable regions separately instead of inferring missing text from the clearest area |
| Absorption CT shows little contrast | Ink and support have similar X-ray attenuation | Discuss phase contrast, elemental XRF mapping, or higher-resolution micro-CT with the facility |
| Tomographic volume is detailed but unreadable | Layers overlap, folds are mis-segmented, or virtual unrolling is unstable | Retain the volume, revise segmentation with conservators, and compare several reconstructed surfaces rather than relying on one flattened view |
| Different operators obtain different readings | Processing choices or display settings are not documented | Preserve raw data and parameters, publish the alternative views, and require agreement across independent evidence |
Access, equipment, and planning
MSI can be performed with portable or laboratory systems. Portable development is an explicit goal of the RIT MISHA initiative, which received a 2020 NEH grant for a lower-cost system and software. A portable setup can reduce transport risk, but it still needs controlled illumination, calibration, stable registration, and an operator who understands conservation photography.
X-ray tomography normally requires a specialist laboratory, synchrotron beamline, or high-end micro-CT system. Facility availability, object transport, dose review, detector geometry, and computational reconstruction all affect feasibility. No single price or turnaround time applies across institutions; those terms must be obtained from the chosen facility after the object and required resolution are assessed.
A decision checklist
- Choose MSI first when the item is flat and accessible and the suspected problem is fading, erasure, overwriting, abrasion, foxing, or chemical alteration.
- Choose X-ray tomography first when the writing is inside a roll, sealed package, charred layer, fold, or other structure that cannot safely be opened.
- Ask about XRF when the writing is beneath the surface or obscured and elemental differences may be stronger than optical or density differences.
- Use both when surface traces and internal layers can answer different parts of the question.
- Require conservation approval for lighting, opening, transport, and X-ray dose before capture.
- Demand auditable outputs: raw data, calibration, processing parameters, provenance, and independent validation should accompany any proposed transcription.
The practical rule is simple: use light to exploit surface and ink differences, use X-rays to reach hidden geometry, and escalate modality only when the object’s contrast and conservation constraints justify it.
