Multimodal AI describes a model’s ability to process or relate different kinds of information; multi-model AI describes a system or workflow that uses more than one model. The terms refer to different things, so a system can be both: it may use several models, including one or more multimodal models.

What does multimodal AI mean?

A multimodal model works with information from more than one modality. NIST defines it as “A model that processes and relates information from multiple sensory modalities that each represent primary human channels of communication and sensation, such as vision and touch.” NIST’s glossary attributes this definition to NIST AI 100-2e2025.

In generative AI, common modalities include text, images, audio, and video. A model’s interface may accept more than one kind of input, or connect one type of input to a different type of output. For example, Google Cloud describes providing a cookie photo and receiving a written recipe. Google Cloud’s overview gives this as an example of combining information types.

Multimodal describes capability, not a guarantee that a model handles every modality or task. Check the documentation for the specific model and the inputs and outputs you need.

What does multi-model AI mean?

Multi-model AI is useful descriptive language for an application or workflow that uses multiple models. It does not have a single settled formal definition in the sources cited here, and the phrase alone does not explain how those models work together.

For example, an application might send an image-related step to one model and a language step to another, then pass the result between them. The models could operate in sequence, be selected through routing, or be combined in another way. Visual ChatGPT is a research example of a system combining visual foundation models for multi-step interaction.

How are the terms different?

Question Multimodal model Multi-model system
What does the term describe? One model’s ability to handle or relate multiple information modalities. An application or workflow that uses more than one model.
What should you examine? Supported input and output types, and performance on your task. Each model’s role, routing or sequencing, handoffs, and overall system performance.
What does the label guarantee? Not that every modality or capability is supported. Not how the models cooperate; the architecture needs a concrete description.
Can both descriptions apply? Yes. A multimodal model can be one component of a multi-model system. Yes. A multi-model system can include multimodal models, single-modality models, or both.

How to choose what matters for your use case

Start with the job your application must do rather than the label. The relevant checks differ depending on whether you are evaluating one model’s modalities or a system composed of several models.

If you are evaluating a model

  • List the input and output types the task requires, such as text plus images.
  • Confirm that the particular model supports those modalities and the intended operation. AWS advises checking modality support for the specific model in its Amazon Bedrock inference API documentation.
  • Evaluate how well it performs on the actual task; the multimodal label alone says nothing about task-specific quality.

If you are designing a multi-model workflow

  • Identify which model handles each step and why the workflow needs more than one.
  • Specify how outputs move between models, including routing, sequence, and handoffs.
  • Assess the complete workflow for task performance, cost, latency, and integration needs. AWS’s generative AI model guidance treats model evaluation as use-case dependent and discusses optimizing cost and performance.

Can an AI system be both multimodal and multi-model?

Yes. A single multimodal model can accept several types of information without being part of a multi-model workflow. Conversely, an application can use several models without any one model being multimodal. A system that uses multiple models, one of which handles more than one modality, fits both descriptions.

When precision matters, describe the actual setup: name the input and output types and explain which models handle which steps. That communicates more than either label on its own.

Example: text and image in one prompt

Google’s Gemini API documentation shows a developer example that combines text with an image in a single prompt. This illustrates multimodality at the model interface; it does not, by itself, mean the application uses multiple models. See Google’s Gemini API text-generation documentation.
