Scott McCloud’s Big Triangle can help you think about how an image represents an idea, but it is a conceptual map—not a universal score for art style or AI output. For generative-image research, Peterson, Anderson, Rondinelli, and Armstrong’s Pictorial Trapezoid adapts the idea into a more systematic, project-specific framework. Multimodal models can also represent and classify aspects of art style, but current evidence does not show that they capture the full meaning of style or reliably map every point on the triangle.
What the Big Triangle can—and cannot—tell you
McCloud’s Big Triangle is a way to consider variation in visual representation, developed in the context of comics. It helps frame choices about how an image depicts something, but it was not designed as a precise scientific measurement system. Peterson and colleagues note that McCloud himself described it as not particularly scientific or exact, and argue that research needs more systematic criteria.
That distinction matters when using multimodal AI. A model can compare images or place them in a learned representation space, but that does not make its output an objective position on a universal scale of style. Unless a project defines what each position means and how to assess it, treat the triangle as a guide for making design decisions—not as a label the model can determine conclusively.

The Pictorial Trapezoid framework distinguishes two kinds of fidelity that can otherwise get conflated:

- Representational fidelity: how much an image resembles the real-world entity it refers to.
- Conceptual fidelity: how clearly it evokes an abstract idea it is meant to convey.
An image may perform differently on these dimensions. For example, if the concept is justice, a detailed courtroom scene could resemble a real place, while a simplified image of balanced scales could evoke the abstract idea more directly. Which is more successful depends on the task: depicting a particular courtroom is not the same goal as communicating justice.
Peterson, Anderson, Rondinelli, and Armstrong developed the Pictorial Trapezoid as an adaptation of the Big Triangle for more systematic generative text-to-image research. They demonstrate it through a development case study and two further use cases. Its criteria are chosen for particular projects; the authors do not establish a single recipe that applies to every image task.

How the triangle, trapezoid, and embeddings differ

The first two approaches help researchers frame image-making and interpretation. An embedding is different: it is a computational representation learned by a model. It may help reveal patterns or support a downstream task, but it does not by itself explain why a work belongs to a tradition or what that tradition means historically and culturally.

Use the framework to make the task explicit before asking a model to compare or generate images. This helps separate a change in subject from a change in visual treatment, and a model result from a human judgment about meaning.

- Define the communication goal. State the real-world subject or abstract concept the image must convey. Keep it fixed if you want to compare styles; changing the subject at the same time makes the comparison harder to interpret.
- Choose the fidelity that matters. Decide whether the priority is resemblance to a real-world referent, evocation of an abstract concept, or a deliberate balance. Record that decision in terms that can be assessed for your task.
- Specify the visual treatment separately. Describe the stylistic or representational variation you want to explore without changing the core subject or concept. Treat positions on the triangle or trapezoid as prompts for these choices, not as objective categories unless you define operational criteria.
- Set up a consistent comparison. If you compare models or outputs, hold the image task, labels, data, and evaluation criteria consistent. A result from one dataset or classification task does not automatically transfer to another.
- Review meaning with people. Ask viewers whether the image communicates the intended concept and whether its treatment is appropriate to the context. Automated features can support analysis, but the cited studies do not establish a general automated score for meaning or cultural accuracy.
What art-embedding studies establish
A 2025 proceedings contribution by Louise Brix Pilegaard Hansen, Jan Kostkan, Roberta Rocca, and Kristoffer Laigaard Nielbo compared seven pretrained vision models on WikiArt genre, style, and artist classification. The institutional research record reports that multimodal models performed best as feature extractors in those tested tasks. This is evidence about those models, dataset, labels, and evaluations—not a general finding that every multimodal model is better for every art collection or style question.
Google Research’s “A Learned Representation For Artistic Style” describes representing paintings as points in an embedding space and combining learned styles to explore new ones. This illustrates how a computational representation can support exploration. It does not mean that the embedding exhausts a painting’s style, historical context, or cultural significance.

Where the evidence stops
The cited work supports the Pictorial Trapezoid as a research framework and shows that art embeddings can be useful for specific classification and exploration tasks. It does not establish a validated, current, general-purpose model that maps the complete Big Triangle across media, cultures, or art-historical traditions. Nor does it provide a universal quantitative improvement attributable to the Pictorial Trapezoid.
