Improve multi-device testing by defining which platforms and configurations you support, choosing a risk-based device matrix, and running each test at the cheapest layer that can give useful feedback. Use quick checks on every change, broader device testing at planned merge and release stages, and logs plus screenshots or video to make failures reproducible.
Start with the product’s support boundaries
There is no practical way to test every device, operating-system release, locale, and configuration. Begin with the people who use the product and the platforms you promise to support. Then write down what the test program must protect: critical user journeys, compatibility, visual rendering, performance, accessibility, or release confidence.
Android Developers recommends teams “write and share a testing strategy document with your team, objectively defining the different layers and your own requirements.” Its guidance says to state goals, priorities, and responsibilities, and to revisit the strategy as the product changes. Android Developers’ testing strategy guidance provides a useful framework.

Expand coverage for release candidates or features whose failure would have a wider impact. W3C’s 2009 Working Group Note on device-independent testing makes the durable point that accounting for every possible device constraint would make such testing impossible; it recommends defining target devices and documenting minimum requirements. W3C’s device-independent testing note is old, so treat it as design guidance rather than a source for current platform capabilities.

Build a risk-based device matrix
A device matrix is the set of device and environment combinations you deliberately test. Include only variables that could plausibly change the behavior under test, then select combinations based on audience prevalence, changed code, past defects, and the consequence of a failure.
- Device and form factor: common models and any relevant edge cases, such as phones, foldables, or tablets.
- Platform and operating-system version: supported versions and versions affected by a recent platform or app change.
- Screen and orientation: screen characteristics and portrait or landscape behavior where relevant.
- Locale: languages or regional formats the product supports.
- Connectivity and hardware: network conditions, memory or CPU limits, extensions, and keyboard, pointer, or other hardware capabilities used by the app.
Do not test every possible combination in every run. For example, a change to a layout may justify checking multiple screen sizes and orientations, while a change to a sign-in integration may call for a narrower set of devices but broader account and network conditions. Keep minimum requirements and test prerequisites explicit.
W3C’s note identifies screen, memory, bandwidth, latency, network cost, CPU, extensions, and input-device access as possible constraints. It advises keeping visual tests simple, avoiding absolute dimensions when possible, and stating prerequisites when a test depends on a specific capability. Firebase Test Lab likewise describes a test matrix built from selected devices and configurations; its device records include model, OS version, orientation, and locale. Firebase Test Lab documentation covers Android and iOS testing on physical devices and virtual Android devices.

Choose test layers and run them at the right time
Put a test at the lowest layer that can give a trustworthy answer. Faster, more focused checks are suitable for frequent runs; slower tests that exercise full user journeys belong at deliberate stages. Manual exploratory testing still matters for unscripted investigation, usability, and rendering issues that automation may not reveal.
- Unit tests: check isolated logic quickly, often on every change.
- Component tests: check UI behavior or appearance without exercising the entire application.
- Integration or feature tests: check interactions among application parts, including before a change is merged.
- On-device end-to-end tests: check critical user journeys and behavior dependent on the platform or device.
- Exploratory testing: investigate usability, rendering, or unexpected behavior that scripted cases do not cover.
Android Developers gives an example cadence: run unit and component tests on each commit, limiting them to affected modules when appropriate; run unit, component, and feature tests before merge; run application tests after merge; test release candidates nightly on a phone, foldable, and tablet; then run broader device coverage before release. These are example stages, not a universal device-count requirement. Moving tests to a nightly schedule can reduce continuous-integration time, but it also lengthens the feedback loop, so weigh speed, reliability, and the risk of defects escaping. Android Developers’ testing strategy guidance explains the example cadence.
Combine emulators, physical devices, and managed services
Emulators are useful for repeatable development checks and lower-cost automated coverage. Physical devices help catch behavior tied to actual hardware or configuration, including rendering, installation, upgrades, and hardware-dependent features. A managed device service can broaden physical-device coverage or run tests in parallel without requiring a large in-house lab. These approaches serve different purposes; none removes the need to choose a relevant matrix.

For a small in-house pool, select devices from the audience and supported configurations rather than buying a phone simply to claim device coverage. One phone cannot represent multiple form factors or operating-system versions. Android’s release-candidate example uses a phone, foldable, and tablet to illustrate broader form-factor coverage.

It offers instrumentation and XCTest options, as well as Robo tests that do not require prewritten test code. The service is not intended for load testing application back-end servers. Firebase Test Lab documentation describes its execution options and scope.
There is an important transition date for teams using that service. Google’s deprecation FAQ, last updated October 6, 2026, says Firebase Test Lab executions remain supported through September 30, 2027; after that date, Google says the Firebase Test Lab console and API will shut down. Google identifies Developer Device Platform as the replacement. The FAQ says its rates will match Firebase Test Lab rates through April 30, 2027; after that, pricing is expected to change to pay-per-use and per-device slot subscription options, and billing must be enabled for the new platform. These are time-sensitive terms; confirm the official Firebase Test Lab deprecation FAQ before planning a migration.

AWS Device Farm offers interactive remote access and managed automated app tests on physical Android, iOS, and web devices. Automated runs can run across multiple devices in parallel, with reports, logs, screenshots, and other artifacts. AWS documentation states that Device Farm is available only in the us-west-2 (Oregon) region, so verify regional and service constraints before making it a dependency. AWS Device Farm documentation describes its capabilities.
When choosing a device-testing approach, compare the specific models and OS versions available, supported platforms and form factors, CI integrations and frameworks, parallel-run limits, interactive reproduction options, regional access, security and data handling, billing prerequisites, quotas, and the cost of maintaining in-house devices. Confirm current capabilities and commercial terms directly with the provider; the listed documentation does not establish a comparative price or device-catalog ranking.
Make every failure actionable
A pass or fail without enough context is difficult to use. For each run, record the build and test suite alongside the device model, OS version, locale, orientation, and relevant environment settings. Preserve logs and visual evidence, and make the report visible to the people responsible for the code.

Review coverage when the product changes
Revisit the matrix when analytics, supported OS versions, features, or user populations change. Add coverage after platform upgrades, major UI changes, or defects associated with a particular vendor or form factor. Remove combinations that no longer matter, but retain contractual and accessibility commitments. Keeping the strategy and test prerequisites current prevents the matrix from becoming a collection of obsolete runs.
