Planar Standard is a community-run Magic: The Gathering format for players who want rotating, competitive deck building without Universes Beyond cards. It uses Foundations as its Core set and keeps the previous two years of Universes Within Premier sets, while retaining the normal 60-card Constructed rules, sideboards and four-copy limit. One year after launch, it has a published legality system, recurring community play and an emerging metagame—but it is not a Wizards-sanctioned format.

What is Planar Standard?

Planar Standard changes the card pool and rotation schedule, not the basic way a Standard deck is built or played. Its rules page defines a 60-card minimum maindeck, a sideboard of up to 15 cards and a maximum of four copies of a card by name across the maindeck and sideboard. Basic lands are exempt from the four-copy limit.

The format’s defining rule is its card selection: Foundations (FDN) is the Core set, and the rotating pool contains the previous two years of Universes Within Premier sets. “Universes Within” means Magic’s own settings rather than licensed properties. Any printing of a card becomes legal once that card appears in a set that is legal for Planar Standard.

The current rules page lists Cori-Steel Cutter as banned. Because the format is community-run, players should check that page before entering an event rather than assuming Wizards’ Standard legality or banned list applies.

How do I play Standard without Universes Beyond?

Wizards Play Network documentation says that, beginning in 2025, new Universes Beyond sets became legal in all Constructed formats, including official Standard. The stated goal was to give players entering through those properties a direct path into organized play. Planar Standard is a community-created alternative for players who prefer a pool built around Magic’s own worlds.

That makes the format especially useful if you want the familiar pace of a rotating competitive format but do not want licensed characters and settings in your deck or across the metagame. It is not an official replacement for Wizards’ Standard: stores, tournaments and online clients may support official Standard without offering Planar Standard.

What sets are legal in Planar Standard right now?

Planar Standard versus Wizards’ current Standard

Both formats use familiar Constructed deck construction, but they differ in who defines legality and what enters the pool.

Question Planar Standard Wizards’ current Standard
Are Universes Beyond cards included? No; the pool is Foundations plus Universes Within sets. Yes. Wizards says new Universes Beyond sets are legal in Constructed formats, including Standard, beginning in 2025.
How large and how old is the pool? Foundations plus the previous two years of Universes Within Premier sets. Wizards’ official Standard pool and schedule, which can include Universes Beyond releases.
Who controls legality and bans? The community maintains the rules page; Cori-Steel Cutter is currently listed as banned. Wizards controls the official format’s legality and announcements.
What causes rotation? The first Universes Within set released in each calendar year. Wizards’ official Standard rotation schedule.
Where can you play? Community-run events, channels, a leaderboard and recurring monthly play. Wizards-sanctioned organized play and any platform or store that supports official Standard.
Does an existing collection transfer? Foundations and legal Universes Within cards transfer; most Universes Beyond cards do not. Cards legal under Wizards’ Standard rules transfer, including eligible Universes Beyond cards.

How to build and enter a Planar Standard deck

  1. Check the current legality page. Confirm the set list, the banned card list and the next annual rotation trigger before buying cards or registering a deck.
  2. Choose a legal shell. Start with Foundations or one of the listed Universes Within sets. A card’s artwork, frame or original printing does not make it illegal by itself; the card is legal when it has a printing in a legal set.
  3. Build at least 60 cards in the maindeck. Keep the total number of copies of each nonbasic card at four or fewer across the maindeck and sideboard. You may use any number of basic lands.
  4. Prepare up to 15 sideboard cards. Sideboard cards count toward the same four-copy limit, so four copies split between the maindeck and sideboard still count as four.
  5. Verify event-specific procedures. Because Planar Standard is not sanctioned by Wizards, an organizer may specify deck-registration, proxy or pairing procedures. Follow the event listing rather than assuming official Standard procedures.

Is Planar Standard actually growing?

There is no independently published player count, attendance total or growth rate. The strongest available evidence is qualitative: the format reached its one-year milestone with a maintained rules page, community channels, an events listing and a leaderboard, and its anniversary coverage describes an ecosystem rather than a one-off experiment.

A reported recent Top 8 included Sultai Midrange, Esper Superfriends, four-color Control, Rakdos Aggro, Azorius Surveil, Golgari Midrange, Izzet Opus Combo and Gruul Midrange. Gruul Midrange won that event. These results show strategic variety in one tournament snapshot, not a measured metagame census. The anniversary account also says Reality Fracture had just released and left the format “wide open,” so the results may not represent a settled environment.

Mark Rosewater has said Wizards assessed interest in a Universes Beyond-less format and that the results did not show an audience at the time. He also said Wizards is watching Planar Standard to see whether it gains momentum. That is Rosewater’s description of Wizards’ findings, not a published sample size or independently reported results.

Can I use my Universes Beyond deck anywhere?

Not automatically in Planar Standard. A deck built from a Universes Beyond set is generally outside the format unless its individual cards also have legal printings and the deck meets Planar Standard’s current rules. The same deck may be legal in Wizards’ Standard if its cards are in that official pool, or in another format with its own rules.

The community’s monthly Legality Fracture event is the practical bridge: players may bring a Universes Beyond brew alongside Planar Standard decks. It gives newer players whose collections began with a Universes Beyond set a way to join community play without immediately replacing their cards.

What should a new player buy or use first?

Foundations is the most direct starting point because it is the listed Core set and remains central to the format’s design. Foundations sealed product or individual Foundations cards can provide a base of lands, staple effects and cards that are not tied to a single short-lived release. Add cards from the current Universes Within pool only after checking the next rotation trigger; a deck that is powerful today may lose key pieces when the first Universes Within set of the year arrives.

  • If you want the broadest tournament access: build for Wizards’ official Standard and verify each event’s current legality.
  • If you want a no-Universes-Beyond card pool: build for Planar Standard and use its rules page as the authority.
  • If your collection is mostly Universes Beyond: look for a Legality Fracture event or another local event that explicitly permits those cards.

Why the format matters after its first year

Planar Standard offers a clear compromise: it preserves rotating-deck decisions and ordinary competitive rules while drawing a line around Magic’s own settings. Its one-year milestone shows that players have built repeatable events and a recognizable deck ecosystem, but its community status also means availability depends on organizers rather than Wizards’ sanctioned tournament infrastructure. For players who do not want Universes Beyond in Standard, that trade-off is the central reason to try it.
