Choose Calling All Angels if you want evasive attacks and life-gain payoffs; Keen Engineering if you enjoy building an artifact engine; Wretched Ranks if recurring Zombies and sacrificing creatures sounds fun; Reign of Dragons if you want explosive tribal damage; and Tramplesaurus Rex if your ideal turn is making extra mana and attacking with enormous creatures. All five are ready-to-play, monocolor Commander decks built as straightforward introductions to the format.
The five Magic: The Gathering Foundations Commander decks release on October 2, 2026. This guide matches each deck’s commander, board plan, interaction and upgrade path to the way you prefer to play.
At a glance: the five Foundations Commander decks
| Deck | Color and face commander | Best for players who prefer… | How it wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calling All Angels | White — Giada, Font of Hope | Evasive attacks, life gain and Angel tribal play | Growing a flying army, then applying combat pressure while life-value cards keep you ahead |
| Keen Engineering | Blue — Sai, Master Thopterist | Building an artifact engine and gaining incremental card advantage | Turning a large artifact count and Thopter tokens into a sustained air attack |
| Wretched Ranks | Black — Ghoulcaller Gisa | Graveyard recursion, sacrifice value and Zombie swarms | Trading creatures for value, returning them, and draining opponents over a long game |
| Reign of Dragons | Red — Lathliss, Dragon Queen | Splashy tribal turns, Treasure acceleration and direct damage | Deploying several large Dragons and converting each one into combat or triggered damage |
| Tramplesaurus Rex | Green — Ghalta, Primal Hunger | Ramp, oversized creatures and uncomplicated combat | Making abundant mana, casting huge threats and finishing with an overrun effect |
Wizards describes these products as introductions to Commander: each monocolor list uses a simple, exciting strategy such as artifacts, big creatures or Dragons. That simplicity makes them suitable for a first deck, while the recognizable themes give returning players a clear direction for upgrades.

What comes in a Foundations Commander deck?
Each of the five products is a ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck. The published contents are:
#1 Best Overall

- One traditional foil, borderless face commander
- 99 nonfoil cards
- Ten nonfoil, double-sided tokens
- One reference card
- One deck box
The face commanders are Giada, Font of Hope; Sai, Master Thopterist; Ghoulcaller Gisa; Lathliss, Dragon Queen; and Ghalta, Primal Hunger. The included tokens are matched to the deck’s plan rather than being generic extras: Angels and Clues support Calling All Angels, Thopters and Myr support Keen Engineering, Zombies and Zombie Knights support Wretched Ranks, Treasure and Dragons support Reign of Dragons, and Beasts and Phyrexian Beasts support Tramplesaurus Rex.
Because these are monocolor decks, every card’s mana base and color requirements are easy to understand. That is useful when teaching Commander, lending a deck to a new player, or keeping several decks available for a casual game night.
Calling All Angels: Giada, Font of Hope
Choose it if you like flying attacks and life-gain payoffs
Calling All Angels is the most immediately recognizable “tribal creatures in the air” deck. Giada, Font of Hope supports an Angel-heavy battlefield, while life total matters as a source of resilience and value. You develop a board of evasive creatures, gain life through your Angel payoffs, and use that buffer to survive until your fliers can end the game.
The Tool Desk

The list includes Bishop of Wings, Righteous Valkyrie, Lyra Dawnbringer, Serra Avenger and Sephara, Sky’s Blade. Those cards give the deck a mix of token production, life-linked rewards, anthem effects and individually powerful attackers. Clue support provides a way to turn spare mana into cards when attacking is not yet safe.
White’s interaction is visible and decisive. Austere Command and Day of Judgment can reset a board that has grown beyond your control, while white removal deals with problematic permanents. The deck’s tokens are primarily Angel and Clue variants, so its board can contain both pressure and a reserve of card draw.
How to upgrade it
- Add more Angel tribal payoffs and cards that reward gaining life.
- Increase the density of efficient flying threats if your table is slower.
- Keep a deliberate balance between creatures and sweepers; replacing too many Angels with generic answers weakens the deck’s central identity.
This is the best fit for a player who wants a forgiving combat deck with an aerial advantage, rather than a deck that depends on graveyard loops or a complicated combo.

Keen Engineering: Sai, Master Thopterist
Choose it if you enjoy assembling an engine
Keen Engineering plays differently from the other four products. Instead of relying mainly on a creature tribe, it accumulates artifacts, converts them into Thopter tokens and uses those artifacts for cards, mana or pressure. Sai, Master Thopterist is the deck’s central engine: artifacts entering play help build a flying board, and the deck can sacrifice artifacts when it needs additional cards.
What the deck does
Master of Etherium, Thought Monitor, Shimmer Dragon, Thopter Spy Network, Myr Battlesphere and Steel Overseer show the intended progression. Early artifacts establish resources; later payoffs make the whole collection larger, draw cards or produce additional bodies. Artifact ramp lets you advance your board while keeping blue mana available for interaction.
Blue contributes counterspells, bounce and other ways to interrupt a key play. That means Keen Engineering rewards patience: you do not need to attack as soon as a Thopter appears. Build an engine, protect the important piece, then turn a wide artifact board into an evasive clock. Thopter and Myr tokens give you material to attack, block or sacrifice.
How to upgrade it
- Add artifact cost reducers so multiple spells can be deployed in one turn.
- Increase the number of artifact payoff engines that draw cards or scale with your artifact count.
- Choose protection and counter magic that preserve Sai or your most valuable engine rather than filling every slot with generic answers.
Select this deck if you like seeing several small decisions compound into a strong position. It is less direct than Tramplesaurus Rex and less creature-tribal than the Angel, Zombie or Dragon lists.
Wretched Ranks: Ghoulcaller Gisa
Choose it if creatures are resources, not possessions
Wretched Ranks is the deck for a player who is comfortable sacrificing a creature now because it will create a better position later. Its Zombie tribal plan combines graveyard recursion, sacrifice outlets and death triggers. A Zombie that dies can still be useful when it returns, creates another token or drains an opponent.
What the deck does
Gravecrawler and Lord of the Undead provide the recurring-tribe foundation. Diregraf Colossus rewards a high Zombie count, while Grave Titan and Army of the Damned can rapidly populate the battlefield. Open the Graves and Oversold Cemetery reinforce the graveyard plan by ensuring that creature losses do not end your stream of threats.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Carrion Feeder is a sacrifice outlet, and Vengeful Dead and Gray Merchant of Asphodel turn a wide or frequently dying board into life loss. Black interaction includes creature removal, discard-adjacent attrition and graveyard value. Its Zombie and Zombie Knight tokens make it possible to trade creatures while retaining a board presence.
How to upgrade it
- Prioritize additional Zombie recursion and reliable sacrifice outlets.
- Add payoffs for creatures entering or leaving the battlefield, especially effects that drain each opponent.
- Protect the graveyard plan from exile-based disruption; a recursion deck needs a backup way to win when its graveyard is unavailable.
Choose Wretched Ranks if you want the most attrition-oriented list of the five. It rewards planning around death, recursion timing and resource exchanges rather than simply curving creatures into combat.
Reign of Dragons: Lathliss, Dragon Queen
Choose it if you want spectacular turns
Reign of Dragons is the high-impact tribal deck. Its plan is to accelerate into Dragons, reduce their costs, create additional Dragon bodies and turn every large creature into damage. Treasure tokens help bridge the gap between the early game and the expensive threats that define the deck.

Lathliss, Dragon Queen creates a Dragon token when another nontoken Dragon enters under your control. Dragon Tempest and Scourge of Valkas reward you for putting multiple Dragons onto the battlefield, while Warstorm Surge converts a creature entering play into direct damage. Crucible of Fire increases the combat output of your Dragon army.
Dragonlord’s Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman reduce costs, making it possible to cast more than one threat in a turn. Utvara Hellkite and other large legendary Dragons provide the top end. Red interaction leans toward damage and sweepers, so the deck can clear blockers or finish a weakened table, but it is less focused on holding up countermagic than Keen Engineering.
How to upgrade it
- Add more Dragon cost reduction so the deck reaches its explosive turns sooner.
- Increase damage doublers and enter-the-battlefield damage payoffs when your group allows higher burst potential.
- Retain enough early ramp and removal to avoid spending the first several turns doing nothing while waiting for a six-mana creature.
Reign of Dragons is the natural choice for a player who wants each turn to feel like an event. It is more mana-hungry than the other decks, but its Treasure and cost-reduction package is designed to compensate.

Tramplesaurus Rex: Ghalta, Primal Hunger
Choose it if your answer is “more mana and bigger creatures”
Tramplesaurus Rex is the clearest battle-cruiser deck. It accelerates its mana, casts oversized green creatures and uses trample or an overrun effect to make a large board lethal. You are not expected to assemble a delicate sequence: the deck’s strength is the pressure created by individually enormous threats.
Recommended Free Tools
What the deck does
Ghalta, Primal Hunger leads a creature-heavy list that includes Gigantosaurus, Carnage Tyrant, Elder Gargaroth and Managorger Hydra. Multiple mana creatures let you reach those threats ahead of schedule. Rishkar’s Expertise can turn a large creature into a substantial refill of cards, while Overwhelming Stampede and Unnatural Growth convert creature size into a table-wide combat finish.
Green interaction uses fight effects, creature removal and protection rather than a stack-based permission plan. Beast and Phyrexian Beast tokens add bodies, but the deck primarily wins through large individual creatures and combat damage. This makes its game plan easy to explain to a new player and easy for opponents to read.
How to upgrade it
- Increase mana acceleration so the deck’s expensive threats arrive earlier.
- Add haste effects to prevent opponents from getting a full turn to prepare for each large creature.
- Strengthen overrun-style finishes and include protection that keeps a lethal attack from being stopped by one removal spell.
Pick Tramplesaurus Rex if you prefer proactive play, straightforward sequencing and the satisfaction of attacking with the biggest creature at the table.
How the five decks differ in actual play
| Play pattern | Angels | Artifacts | Zombies | Dragons | Big green creatures |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preferred action | Attack through the air and gain life | Assemble an engine and accumulate value | Sacrifice, recur and drain | Ramp into explosive tribal damage | Ramp and attack with oversized threats |
| Board growth | Angels plus Clues | Thopters plus Myr | Zombie and Zombie Knight swarms | Dragons plus Treasure | Large creatures plus Beast tokens |
| Interaction profile | Removal and board wipes | Countermagic and bounce | Removal, attrition and graveyard value | Damage and red sweepers | Fight effects, removal and protection |
| Typical finish | Wide evasive combat | Artifact-powered Thopter attacks | Death triggers and a recurring swarm | Dragon triggers plus combat damage | Overrun-style combat |
For a first Commander game, the most important distinction is not power level but decision style. Calling All Angels and Tramplesaurus Rex make their combat plans apparent. Keen Engineering asks you to sequence artifacts and protect an engine. Wretched Ranks asks you to plan around death and recursion. Reign of Dragons asks you to manage a slower start in exchange for explosive turns.

Release date, preorders and price expectations
Foundations Commander releases October 2, 2026, alongside Reality Fracture. Wizards’ announcement identifies local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon and other Magic retailers as preorder channels. Retailer stock and pricing can change, so check the listing for the exact deck you want rather than assuming all five have the same availability.
Wizards’ separate Foundations MSRP announcement gives prices for Play Boosters ($5.25), Collector Boosters ($24.99), the Starter Collection ($59.99), Jumpstart Boosters ($5.49), the Bundle ($49.99) and the Beginner Box ($29.99). It does not publish an MSRP for Foundations Commander decks. Therefore, there is no official fixed Commander price to use as a benchmark; compare current retailer listings, and treat any sale price as temporary unless the seller says otherwise.
What to prepare before your first game
- Choose the deck whose preferred action matches how you want to spend your turns, not merely the creature type you recognize.
- Use the included reference card to review Commander-specific turn structure and keyword reminders.
- Sleeve the 100-card deck and keep the ten double-sided tokens together so token identities are easy to find.
- Before upgrading, play several games and note whether you lack mana, cards, interaction or a reliable finisher.
- Make upgrades that reinforce the deck’s existing plan: Angel and lifegain payoffs, artifact reducers and engines, Zombie recursion and sacrifice, Dragon cost reduction and damage, or green ramp, haste and overrun effects.
These products are ready to play out of the box, so upgrades are optional. The most useful first change is usually a consistency improvement that supports the deck’s stated plan rather than replacing it with an unrelated theme.
