To build a strong MTG Arena Brawl deck, choose the queue first, then build a legal 100-card singleton list around a commander whose ability supports a clear game plan. Standard-pool Brawl, Historic Brawl, and ranked Competitive Brawl have different card pools or rules, so a deck recommendation only makes sense when its queue is named.

Which MTG Arena Brawl format should you play?

The format determines which cards you can use and how matchmaking works. Wizards describes Brawl as a Standard-card-pool format and Historic Brawl as using cards available on Arena, subject to each format’s rules and bans. Ranked Competitive Brawl is a separate queue with its own mulligan and matchmaking rules. Check the queue name and current legality before building or importing a list.

Queue Card pool and deck rules Starting life and mulligan Matchmaking
Standard-pool Brawl One commander and 99 other Brawl-legal cards sharing its color; singleton except basic lands; no sideboard. Uses a Standard card pool. Wizards’ Brawl rules; Arena format overview. 25 life; best of one; one free mulligan. Wizards’ Brawl rules. Deck power, weighted mostly by commander choice, and Constructed skill rating. Wizards’ Competitive Brawl announcement.
Historic Brawl Uses cards available on Arena, subject to format rules and bans. Check the client for the current legal list. Arena format overview. Confirm the queue’s current rules in Arena; the cited format overview distinguishes its card pool but does not specify all queue-specific details. Ordinary Brawl matchmaking considers deck power, weighted mostly by commander choice, and Constructed skill rating. Wizards’ Competitive Brawl announcement.
Competitive Brawl 100 singleton cards, one commander, commander color identity, and the queue’s current legality and ban rules. Wizards’ Competitive Brawl rules. 25 life; no free mulligan. Wizards’ Competitive Brawl announcement. Uses Constructed rank and rating; deck composition is not a matchmaking factor. Wizards’ Competitive Brawl announcement.

Rules and bans can change. Wizards’ September 11, 2026 format update says Nadu, Winged Wisdom is banned in Brawl effective September 22, 2026; the update lists no Competitive Brawl ban changes. Verify the current format update and ban information, then use the Arena deck builder to confirm a card is legal in the queue you selected.

How to choose a Brawl commander

There is no official commander-by-commander performance ranking or current win-rate data established here. Rather than treating one commander as universally best, choose one that suits your preferred pace and gives the deck a concrete plan. These comparisons are ways to make a choice, not a published ranking.

  • Game plan and pace: Decide whether you want creature combat, spells, tokens, artifacts, or a value engine. Consider what a typical turn looks like and how quickly the commander can affect the game.
  • Ability and synergy: Look for cards that directly enable or reward the commander’s text. A synergy card still needs to earn its slot by being useful compared with other available options.
  • Color identity: The commander’s colors determine which cards you can include. More colors can open access to more effects, but do not add colors unless the plan benefits from them.
  • Mana cost and resilience: Ask when the commander can realistically come down, what it does if it survives, and whether the deck can still function when it is removed.
  • Matchmaking implications: In ordinary Brawl, commander choice contributes heavily to deck-power matchmaking. Competitive Brawl instead matches using rank and rating, not deck composition.

Wizards says its goal is “to support as many viable commander options as possible by curating cards in the 99 and leveraging matchmaking to find appropriate opponents,” in Dave Finseth’s September 11, 2026 format update. The statement describes the approach, not a guarantee that every commander performs equally.

How to build an MTG Arena Brawl deck

  1. Pick the queue. Select Standard-pool Brawl, Historic Brawl, or Competitive Brawl before choosing cards. Confirm its current card pool, deck rules, and ban list using the Arena client and Wizards’ latest format update.
  2. Choose a commander and a play pattern. Write down what the deck is trying to do: for example, turn the commander’s ability into creature pressure, repeated spell value, tokens, or artifact synergies. This gives you a standard for evaluating every other card.
  3. Start with the commander’s text. Add cards that directly enable its ability or benefit from it. Then assess each synergy card on its own merits; a thematic fit is not enough if the card is weaker than a practical alternative. This is the core principle in Gavin Verhey’s Brawl commander deck-building guidance.
  4. Plan the curve around reliable access to your commander. The commander occupies a predictable role in the deck’s mana plan, so decide what you want to do before and after casting it. Keep early plays, mana development, and later actions that support the chosen strategy instead of filling the list only with high-cost synergy cards.
  5. Complete the 99 with functional cards. Include the support the plan needs to keep operating, not just cards that interact with the commander. Check color restrictions and singleton rules as you fill the list, and make sure the deck can make useful plays when its commander is unavailable.
  6. Validate and tune in Arena. Use the deck builder’s format and legality checks, then play games. Remove cards that do not advance the plan or help the deck function, and revise the curve or support where games show a genuine gap. Wizards’ Arena getting-started guide covers the client’s deck-building tools.

How to check legality before playing

  • Confirm the exact queue, not just the word “Brawl.”
  • Check that the commander and every card are legal in that queue and satisfy its color or color-identity rules.
  • Confirm there is only one copy of each nonbasic card and that the list has the required 100 cards including its commander.
  • Review current bans, then let Arena’s deck builder validate the finished list.

Wizards reported that Brawl passed Historic’s play rate in early 2025. That is a historical comparison of format activity, not evidence that a particular commander is stronger or more popular today. Wizards’ 2026 State of the Formats.
