If removing Message Queuing (MSMQ) fails, first capture the complete error code. Microsoft documents one specific Windows Server removal failure: error 0x800f0922 can occur when the Windows Temp directory contains more than 65,000 files. If that exact code appears, check the Temp directory and follow the steps below; this cause is not established for other codes or for every instance of 0x800f0922.
Check whether Microsoft’s documented fix matches your error
Record the full error message and code, Windows edition and version, the exact feature or subfeature selected, and the removal method. A message mentioning “add or remove features” is not enough to identify the cause. Microsoft’s documented Temp-directory diagnosis is specifically for Windows Server feature or role removal that fails with 0x800f0922.
For that exact Windows Server scenario, Microsoft says more than 65,000 files in the Windows Temp directory can cause the failure. The usual location is C:WindowsTemp. See Microsoft’s Windows Server role or feature removal troubleshooting guidance for the condition and remedy.
Remove the Temp files only if the condition applies
- Open
C:WindowsTempin File Explorer. If the configured Windows Temp location differs, check that location instead. - Check whether the folder contains more than 65,000 files. Do not treat the threshold as a general explanation for other error codes.
- If the documented condition is present, delete the contents of the Temp folder, then retry removing the role or feature. Leave the Temp folder itself in place.
If the code is different, the file count is below the documented threshold, or the retry still fails, use the broader diagnostics below rather than assuming this fix applies.

Remove the feature through a Windows Server tool
For Windows Server, Microsoft documents two removal routes: the Server Manager Remove Roles and Features wizard, or the PowerShell Uninstall-WindowsFeature cmdlet. Follow the reported restart state; some removals require a restart. See Microsoft’s Uninstall-WindowsFeature reference.
Server Manager
- Open Server Manager and select Manage > Remove Roles and Features.
- Choose the target server, then select the roles or features to remove. Confirm that the selected item is the intended MSMQ component.
- Complete the wizard and note whether it reports that a restart is required.
PowerShell
Run PowerShell with administrative privileges and use the feature name for the component you intend to remove. To identify installed feature names, use Get-WindowsFeature; then remove the correct entry, for example:

Uninstall-WindowsFeature -Name <FeatureName>Replace <FeatureName> with the actual feature name shown on the server; do not run the placeholder literally. Check the command’s result for restart information.

Use -Remove only when you intend to delete the payload
Adding -Remove removes the feature payload from the server as well as uninstalling the feature. Dependent feature files can also be removed. Microsoft documents using -WhatIf to preview the files affected before making that change; review the preview carefully. See the cmdlet documentation.

If the Temp fix does not explain the failure
Microsoft’s general feature troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the relevant logs and component-store health. Preserve the complete error details and look for entries at the time of the failed removal.
- Review the System and Windows Setup logs, along with
Applications And Services LogsMicrosoftWindowsServerManager-MultiMachine. - Compare the failed removal with another feature operation, if practical, to see whether the problem is specific to MSMQ or affects feature changes more broadly.
- Check component-store health from an elevated command prompt or PowerShell session:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logfor servicing errors associated with the attempt. - If component-store corruption has been addressed, run elevated
SFC /scannowand review its result.
These checks can help narrow down the failure; they do not establish a single cause for every unsuccessful feature removal. Microsoft’s Windows Server roles and features troubleshooting guide describes the log and servicing checks.

Do not confuse an MSMQ installation issue with removal failure
A Microsoft Q&A thread about Windows Server 2019 concerns installing MSMQ, not uninstalling it. In that installation context, a Microsoft employee wrote: “MSMQ-HTTP can only be installed in default web site with site id#1.” The reply also says a Windows Server 2019 RTM issue involving mitigation policies was fixed in later Windows updates. That guidance is relevant only if the operation is an MSMQ-HTTP installation or involves that historical RTM condition; it is not a documented uninstall fix. The original asker reported that the installation issue was not resolved. See the Microsoft Q&A thread.
