For most full-size gaming PCs, start with the MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI if you want four M.2 sockets, Wi-Fi 7 and Killer 5G LAN, or the PRO Z890-P WIFI if its simpler feature set meets your needs and you want to spend less. Choose the MPG Z890 CARBON WIFI when your build needs more high-speed expansion, and the mini-ITX MPG Z890I EDGE TI WIFI when a compact case is the priority.
All are part of MSI’s Z890 platform for Intel Core Ultra Processors (Series 2) using the LGA 1851 socket. The right pick depends less on gaming performance claims and more on case fit, storage, expansion cards, networking and the price of the exact model.
Check CPU and case compatibility first
MSI announced its Z890 range on October 10, 2024, for Intel Core Ultra Processors (Series 2) on LGA 1851. Before buying, verify that your exact CPU appears on the selected board’s support page and check whether it requires a particular BIOS version: MSI MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI support, for example, is model-specific. MSI’s full lineup also includes MEG GODLIKE, ACE and UNIFY-X; MPG CARBON and EDGE models; MAG TOMAHAWK; and several PRO boards. The top tier is not automatically the best fit for a gaming build.

Form factor narrows the choice. The MPG Z890I EDGE TI WIFI is the lineup’s mini-ITX option; the other boards discussed here are full-size ATX-class choices. Confirm the board’s dimensions in its manual and compare them with the case’s supported motherboard formats. Also check CPU-cooler height, graphics-card length and thickness, and clearance around power connectors and storage before assuming a compact build will fit.

Match the board to the build
| Board | Best fit | Evidence-backed features | MSI US store price observed |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI | Full-size build needing broad storage and strong networking | Wi-Fi 7, Killer 5G LAN, four M.2 sockets and a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot | $259.99 at the time of access; price and stock can change |
| PRO Z890-P WIFI | Full-size build where a lower observed price matters more than extra features | Check the exact WIFI model’s specification page for networking, storage and I/O before purchase. The reviewed PRO Z890-P specification page is for the model without the WIFI suffix. | $239.99 at the time of access; price and stock can change |
| MPG Z890 CARBON WIFI | Build with planned high-speed expansion cards in addition to a graphics card | CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 slot plus a second CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 slot operating up to x8 | $369.99 at the time of access; price and stock can change |
| MPG Z890I EDGE TI WIFI | Compact mini-ITX build | Mini-ITX form factor; verify board, case and component clearance using the exact model manual | Not stated in the cited MSI US store observations |
The listed prices are observations from MSI’s US store, not guaranteed current prices or durable MSRP. Check your region’s listing and confirm the full model name, including WIFI suffixes, since similarly named boards may differ.
Choose the TOMAHAWK WIFI for a balanced full-size build
The MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI is the clearest fit when you want one board to cover gaming basics while leaving room for multiple NVMe drives. MSI lists four M.2 sockets, a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot, Wi-Fi 7 and Killer 5G LAN. That combination is useful if you expect to add storage or value both wireless and fast wired networking. It does not, by itself, establish higher frame rates than another Z890 board.
Choose the PRO Z890-P WIFI only after checking its exact spec
The PRO Z890-P WIFI had the lowest observed price among the three full-size models with prices available here. However, the specification page reviewed was for the PRO Z890-P without the WIFI suffix. Do not assume that page proves the WIFI version’s wireless, wired-networking, M.2, SATA or I/O details. Compare the exact WIFI model’s current MSI specifications and manual with your needs before deciding that the lower price is the better value.

Choose the CARBON WIFI for expansion you will actually use
The MPG Z890 CARBON WIFI is the more relevant option if you plan to install additional high-speed expansion cards. MSI specifies a CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and a second CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 slot that supports up to x8. Check the manual for lane-sharing behavior with your intended devices and slots. Extra expansion capability is not extra gaming performance on its own; it matters when the build includes hardware that can use it.
Choose the EDGE TI mini-ITX for a genuinely compact case
The MPG Z890I EDGE TI WIFI is the compact-lineup choice when the case requires mini-ITX. Mini-ITX constrains the available board area, so check the number and placement of expansion slots, M.2 sockets, headers and connectors against the components you intend to install. Confirm case compatibility from the case and board manufacturers rather than relying on the model name or a general size description.
Compare the details that affect your build
Expansion slots
Start with the graphics card, then count any other cards you expect to use, such as capture, audio or networking cards. Compare slot generation and electrical lane configuration—not just the number of physical slots—in the exact board manual. The CARBON’s second CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 slot, up to x8, is a concrete reason to consider it for multi-card expansion, not a reason to pay more if you have no such device planned.

M.2 and SATA storage
Count the NVMe drives you have now and may add later, then check the board’s M.2 generations and any shared-lane or port-disable conditions in its manual. MSI lists four M.2 sockets for the MAG Z890 TOMAHAWK WIFI. For other models, including the PRO Z890-P WIFI, use the exact model’s current specification page rather than inferring capacity from a related name. Check SATA capacity too if you plan to reuse 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives.

Choose based on how the PC will connect: wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both. The TOMAHAWK WIFI’s official specifications list Wi-Fi 7 and Killer 5G LAN; do not transfer those details to another MSI Z890 model. Compare rear USB ports, front-panel USB headers, display outputs, audio connections and networking on each exact model’s specifications. Make sure the board has the ports your peripherals and case require.
Memory support
MSI says its Z890 lineup supports memory overclocking up to 9200+ MT/s, with up to 9600 MT/s for the UNIFY-X. Those are manufacturer claims, not guaranteed speeds for every system. Actual support depends on the processor, DIMM count and arrangement, and memory kit. Check the board’s memory QVL and manual before choosing a kit or relying on an overclocked data rate.

Budget
MSI’s US store listed the TOMAHAWK WIFI at $259.99, CARBON WIFI at $369.99 and PRO Z890-P WIFI at $239.99 when accessed. These dated observations are useful only as a snapshot; prices and availability vary. Compare the current price with the features you will use, not with an assumption that a higher-tier board improves gaming performance.

- Confirm the platform: match your Intel Core Ultra Series 2 CPU to an LGA 1851 board and check the exact model’s CPU support and BIOS requirements.
- Confirm physical fit: match ATX or mini-ITX to the case, then check cooler, GPU, radiator and connector clearances.
- Count devices: list graphics and other PCIe cards, NVMe drives, SATA drives, case USB needs and wired or wireless connections.
- Read the exact manual and specifications: check slot lanes, M.2/SATA sharing, headers, rear I/O and memory QVL for the full model name.
- Check current local pricing: compare like-for-like model variants and verify stock before purchase.
MSI’s own selection guidance positions EDGE and TOMAHAWK as options with core features for buyers who do not need its highest-end performance tier. That is a useful way to think about the lineup: pay for compatibility and features your build uses, rather than choosing by tier name alone.
