The best MSI Claw alternative depends on what you value most. Choose the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X for a current Windows handheld with broad launcher support, the Lenovo Legion Go 2 for its large 8.8-inch OLED screen and detachable controllers, the Lenovo Legion Go S for a third-party SteamOS option, or the Steam Deck OLED for the most console-like SteamOS experience. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM remains a high-priced performance reference, not a universal winner.
Windows generally gives you the widest choice of launchers and configuration, while SteamOS tends to feel more like a console but can require extra work for games outside the Steam ecosystem. Screen size, weight, battery behavior, game compatibility, local pricing and stock should decide your purchase—not a single headline benchmark.

First choose the operating system: SteamOS or Windows
Why SteamOS feels more like a console
SteamOS is designed around a Steam-first experience. The cited comparison from Held Games describes it as generally more console-like: you can select a game from a controller-friendly library, suspend play and avoid much of the desktop maintenance associated with a conventional PC. That is a practical tendency, not a promise that every Steam title or peripheral will work without adjustment.
The trade-off is launcher breadth. Games tied to other storefronts, proprietary launchers, anti-cheat systems or unusual Windows utilities may need a workaround, a separate installation method or may not be supported. If most of your games are in Steam, that limitation may never matter. If your library is spread across multiple launchers, check each important title before buying.
Why Windows is more flexible
Windows handhelds expose the same broad software environment as a laptop. You can install different PC stores, use desktop applications, change drivers and configure peripherals without relying on a compatibility layer. That flexibility is the main reason to choose the ROG Xbox Ally X or another Windows model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Windows also means more setup. Updates, launchers, account sign-ins, desktop dialogs and controller mapping can interrupt the console-like flow. The comparison from Held Games presents this as a practical contrast rather than an absolute rule: Windows offers more configuration and launcher choice, while SteamOS usually demands less day-to-day desktop interaction.
Best Windows alternative: ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X
Why it is the safest all-purpose recommendation
Tom’s Hardware currently recommends the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X as its best Windows handheld. That makes it the most straightforward replacement for an MSI Claw buyer who wants to stay on Windows while gaining a current, broadly supported platform. You can keep access to PC launchers and utilities instead of reorganizing your library around SteamOS.
Tom’s Guide lists the Ally X with a 7-inch LCD. That is smaller than the Legion Go 2’s 8.8-inch OLED, but it also points toward a more manageable form factor for travel and longer handheld sessions. The cited sources do not establish a universal weight comparison, so treat the screen-size difference as the clear fact and assess the actual mass of the exact regional model before ordering.

What the benchmark says—and does not say
In PC Gamer’s Black Myth: Wukong test at 1080p Medium, the ROG Xbox Ally X produced 26 average FPS and 19 FPS at the 1% low. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM scored 33 average FPS and 16 FPS at the 1% low under the same reported conditions. The Claw has a higher average in that test, while the Ally X has the higher 1% low; neither result establishes a winner for every game.

Who should buy it
- Choose it if you use multiple PC stores or need ordinary Windows applications.
- Choose it if you want the recommendation supported by a current broad buying guide rather than a niche use case.
- Choose it if a 7-inch display is a better compromise than carrying a larger, heavier handheld.
Before purchase, confirm the exact storage, memory, operating-system build and regional warranty. No globally consistent configuration or price applies, so verify the exact listing.
Best large-screen premium option: Lenovo Legion Go 2
The screen and controls are the reason to choose it
The Legion Go 2 is the alternative for players who want a bigger view of a desktop game. Tom’s Guide lists an 8.8-inch OLED display and a weight above two pounds, plus detachable controllers. OLED can make dark scenes and contrast more appealing, while the larger panel can make small interface text easier to read.
Detachable controllers add flexibility that a conventional fixed handheld cannot provide. You can separate your hands, use the device on a stand or change your grip for longer sessions. Those parts also introduce more hardware to carry and more opportunities for connection, storage and setup issues.
The cost of going big
More than two pounds is a material portability trade-off. A device that feels fine on a desk can become tiring when held above your face or carried in a small bag. The 8.8-inch screen also increases the physical footprint. If you mostly play at home, the display may justify that bulk; if you commute or play in short bursts, a smaller device may be the better fit.
The cited comparison does not establish a current universal price, battery-runtime result or complete component configuration. Check the listing for your country and verify whether the detachable-controller package is included before comparing it with another model.

Best third-party SteamOS choice: Lenovo Legion Go S
Why it matters
The Legion Go S gives SteamOS buyers a choice beyond Valve’s own hardware. That matters if you want the SteamOS interface and game-library workflow but prefer the ergonomics, availability or design of a Lenovo handheld. It is still important to confirm that you are buying the SteamOS version; similarly named Windows configurations may behave very differently.
Performance context
PC Gamer’s table records 15 average FPS and 11 FPS at the 1% low for the Legion Go S in Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p Medium. That is below the reported results for the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM and ROG Xbox Ally X in that particular test. It does not make the Go S unsuitable for less demanding games, lower settings or a library built around titles that run well on SteamOS.
Who should consider it
- Steam users who want a non-Valve design.
- Players who prefer SteamOS’s controller-oriented interface to Windows desktop management.
- Buyers willing to verify game compatibility instead of assuming every Windows title will work identically.
The supplied comparisons do not state the Go S’s exact display size, weight, battery capacity or current price. Use those missing values as a prompt to inspect the precise regional listing rather than filling them with figures from a different configuration.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Most straightforward SteamOS experience: Steam Deck OLED
The Steam Deck OLED remains the natural alternative when your priority is a focused SteamOS device rather than maximum launcher flexibility. Its value is the software experience: a gamepad-first interface, a single primary library and fewer Windows desktop tasks. That simplicity can matter more than a small difference in peak frame rate.
SteamOS does not remove the need to check compatibility. Some games rely on launchers, anti-cheat components or Windows-only software. Review the status of your must-play titles and any multiplayer requirements before committing. If a game outside Steam is central to your library, a Windows model such as the ROG Xbox Ally X is the lower-friction choice.
The cited material does not provide a current universal Deck OLED price, exact panel dimensions or a directly comparable benchmark table. Avoid treating the OLED name alone as proof of longer battery life or higher performance; panel type, software settings and game workload all affect the experience.

Where the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ fits
If you are considering an alternative because the original Claw seems slow, it is useful to separate MSI’s newer Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM from the older Claw A1M. PC Gamer’s review describes the 8 EX AI+ as leading its tested handheld benchmark suite, but places the reviewed price at approximately $1,800. That is a luxury-level review price, not a guaranteed current retail price in every country.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIts reported Black Myth: Wukong result was 33 average FPS and 16 FPS at the 1% low at 1080p Medium. PC Gamer also reports 20 average FPS and 15 FPS at the 1% low for the MSI Claw 8 AI+ in the same table. These are review measurements under specified conditions, not an independent ranking of all handhelds or a prediction for your games.
At that price level, compare the Claw 8 EX AI+ against the Ally X and Legion Go 2 for software compatibility, warranty, screen preference and comfort—not only the highest average FPS. A premium device that is too heavy, too expensive or awkward with your library is a poor alternative regardless of a benchmark lead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse Claw model names
MSI’s 2024 Q2 brochure documents the older Claw A1M. It lists a 53 Wh battery, a microSD card reader and USB-C Power Delivery charging: MSI’s official brochure. Those specifications apply to the A1M described in that document; they do not establish the specifications of the later Claw 8 EX AI+ or other Claw generations.
A battery capacity in watt-hours is not a runtime promise. Runtime changes with screen brightness, refresh behavior, game load, power mode, frame-rate target and background software. Use capacity to understand the size of the battery, then look for a tested runtime under a workload comparable to yours.
The same caution applies to accessories. The brochure confirms a microSD reader and USB-C PD charging for the A1M, but it does not prove that every Claw model—or every competing handheld—supports the same cards, chargers or charging behavior. Verify the exact manual before buying an accessory.

How to choose the right alternative
- List your non-negotiable games. Write down the games you play most, the launcher that supplies each one and whether multiplayer anti-cheat or a Windows-only component is involved.
- Choose the platform. Select Windows for broad launcher and desktop compatibility. Select SteamOS when your library is mainly Steam and a console-like interface is more valuable than universal flexibility.
- Set a portability limit. A larger screen can improve readability, but the Legion Go 2’s listed weight above two pounds shows how screen size and mass can rise together. Decide whether you will hold the device, use it on a desk or carry it daily.
- Decide how you play. Fixed controls suit simple handheld use. Detachable controllers, as on the Legion Go 2, suit separated-hand or tabletop play but add parts and setup considerations.
- Compare tested performance at matching settings. Keep the game, resolution, graphics preset and power mode beside every benchmark. Never compare an average FPS number detached from those conditions.
- Check battery evidence separately from capacity. A larger Wh number may help, but it does not predict identical runtime across different processors, displays and power limits.
- Verify the exact listing. Confirm model suffix, operating system, memory, storage, included charger, regional warranty, return terms and current stock. Editorial prices and availability can become outdated quickly.
Buying checklist for an MSI Claw replacement
- Operating system: Is the listed unit Windows or SteamOS? Do not rely on the product family name alone.
- Game compatibility: Check your essential games, launchers and anti-cheat requirements on the chosen platform.
- Screen: Confirm panel type and size. The cited comparison identifies a 7-inch LCD for the ROG Xbox Ally X and an 8.8-inch OLED for the Legion Go 2.
- Weight and controls: Look for the exact gram or pound figure for your configuration, especially if considering a large model.
- Storage expansion: Confirm whether a microSD reader is present on the exact device and whether your chosen card is supported.
- Charging: Check USB-C Power Delivery requirements, included charger wattage and whether charging accessories are optional.
- Price: Treat approximately $1,800 as PC Gamer’s review-context figure for the Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM, not a universal current price. Obtain a local listing before deciding.
- Returns: A short hands-on return window is valuable because comfort, fan noise, software friction and display preferences are personal.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying for a benchmark instead of a library
A faster result in Black Myth: Wukong does not guarantee a better experience in an older esports game, an emulator or a launcher-dependent title. Start with the games you actually play, then use benchmarks as supporting evidence.
Assuming SteamOS and Windows are interchangeable
They are not. SteamOS can reduce desktop friction for Steam games, while Windows can eliminate compatibility workarounds for other PC stores. Pick the platform that matches your software, not the one that sounds simpler in a specification list.
Ignoring the physical cost of a larger screen
The Legion Go 2’s 8.8-inch OLED and weight above two pounds demonstrate the basic trade-off: more screen area can mean a larger, heavier handheld. Try the grip and control position if possible, or buy from a seller with a clear return policy.
Reading an old Claw specification as a current one
The 53 Wh battery, microSD reader and USB-C PD details belong to the 2024 Claw A1M brochure. They should not be copied to a later Claw model without model-specific documentation.
Bottom line
For most buyers replacing an MSI Claw, start with the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X if you want Windows flexibility, the Steam Deck OLED or Lenovo Legion Go S if your library is Steam-focused, and the Lenovo Legion Go 2 if a large OLED display and detachable controls justify extra bulk. Consider the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ CG3EM only when its premium price and review-tested performance align with your budget and priorities.
