The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is a premium Windows gaming handheld built around Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme processor and Arc B390 graphics. Tom’s Hardware found it the most powerful handheld it had tested at the time, but that result came with a review-era US price of about $1,800, an IPS rather than OLED screen, and a weight of 786g reported by TechRadar. It makes the most sense for buyers who put performance first and accept those trade-offs.
What you get in the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+
The US CG3EM-024US configuration pairs an Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor with integrated Arc B390 graphics, 32GB of LPDDR5x memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD. MSI’s specification page lists Windows 11 Home and an 8-inch touchscreen with 1920 × 1200 resolution, IPS-Level technology and a variable refresh rate from 48Hz to 120Hz. MSI lists 100% sRGB typical color coverage. MSI’s specifications identify the configuration and display details.
The processor has 14 cores and 14 threads, with a maximum listed frequency of 4.7GHz. The controls include Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers, RGB ABXY buttons and a fingerprint security feature. WIRED describes an 80Wh battery, while TechRadar reports a 500-nit display; those details should be checked against the exact regional SKU when comparing listings.

Tom’s Hardware called the Claw 8 EX AI+ the most powerful handheld it had tested at the time of its review. That is a bounded reviewer finding, not a claim that it is the fastest handheld in every game or under every setting. In Tom’s Hardware’s Metro Exodus stress test, the device ran the game 15 times at 800p Medium to simulate roughly 30 minutes and averaged nearly 70 FPS. The outlet also reported advantages of 20 to more than 30 FPS in some tested games at either 1200p or 800p versus the handhelds it compared.

Those figures are tied to particular games, settings and comparison devices. Results can change with resolution, graphics preset, drivers, power profile and whether frame generation is enabled, so they are not a promise of a fixed frame rate across a game library. MSI’s own August 27, 2026 performance article says that, in its testing, the handheld delivered over 120 FPS across multiple AAA titles at 1200p with Frame Generation or Multi-Frame Generation enabled. MSI also notes that actual rates depend on the game, settings, drivers and system conditions; these are manufacturer results, not independent testing. MSI’s performance article gives its test qualification.
MSI also says its Cooler Boost HyperFlow cooling provides 9% higher airflow and 5W more TDP of cooling capacity than the previous generation. Those are MSI’s comparative claims, not independent measurements established by the reviews cited here.

It safeguards your gaming handheld while maintaining the original lightweight feel, easy to install and remove without leaving marks on the device.
- Ergonomic Anti-Slip Grip Design: Textured anti-slip side handles improve holding stability, reduce hand fatigue during extended gameplay. Raised edge around the screen prevents direct contact with flat surfaces, avoiding abrasion to the touch display when placed upside down.
- Built-in Foldable Kickstand: Integrated adjustable kickstand supports horizontal hands-free viewing. Great for desktop gaming, video watching and live streaming, freeing your hands for a more comfortable entertainment experience.
- Heat Dissipation Reserved & Daily Portable: Rear hollow cooling holes align with the original ventilation area to guarantee smooth airflow and prevent overheating. Slim lightweight design fits easily into backpacks and travel bags, ideal for home use, business trips and outdoor gaming
Screen, size and battery trade-offs
IPS instead of OLED
The 8-inch, 1920 × 1200 IPS-Level screen offers VRR up to 120Hz, but it is not OLED. Tom’s Hardware and WIRED both identify the absence of OLED as a missed premium feature. If deep blacks and OLED contrast are high on your list, the Claw’s performance does not erase that display compromise.
Weight and portability
TechRadar reports a weight of 786g. That is a substantial handheld to carry, so consider how long you typically play with a device in your hands and whether you expect to use a stand or other support. TechRadar also reported 500 nits for the display; confirm the exact SKU’s listing if brightness is a deciding factor.

- 8" 120Hz VRR Touch Display: FHD+ IPS screen with 500 nits sunlight readability. 16:10 golden ratio and VRR support eliminate tearing. Perfect for AAA gaming, streaming, or productivity on the go.
- 80Whr Battery + Fast Charge: Massive 80Whr capacity beats most handhelds. Fast charge gets you back in action quickly. Game longer, worry less – whether on a flight or a long commute.
- Revolutionary Intraflow Cooling: Redesigned airflow keeps internal components cool, preventing thermal throttling. Hall Effect analog sticks and triggers offer drift-free, microscopic precision – built to last.
- Unlimited Expansion: Connect external GPU for desktop-class graphics, dual 4K displays, or high-speed storage. Wi-Fi 7 delivers 5.8 Gbps and 2ms latency – lag-free cloud gaming and downloads.
Battery and charging
WIRED describes an 80Wh battery, but the available review information does not establish runtime under a controlled, directly comparable gaming test. Expect battery life to depend on the game and power settings rather than treating battery capacity as a runtime guarantee.
MSI distinguishes the handheld’s maximum charging speed—65W—from the up-to-100W Power Delivery support it describes for a compatible hub-charger setup. The hub’s rating does not mean the Claw itself charges at 100W. MSI’s Claw feature page also identifies a travel case and a custom 8-inch glass screen protector in its Launch Pack; confirm what is included with the specific regional offer you are buying.

Windows 11 and everyday use
Windows 11 gives the Claw access to multiple PC game storefronts, which is useful if your library is spread across services. That flexibility also means using a Windows interface on a handheld-sized screen. WIRED noted repeated updates and an interface that could use streamlining. Buyers who want a console-like experience with minimal setup should weigh that friction alongside game performance.
Tom’s Hardware found the ergonomics good, but comfort is personal, particularly with a 786g device. If possible, assess the grip and control layout in person or check a return policy before committing to a premium purchase.

Price and who should buy it
Review coverage put US launch pricing at $1,799.99, with TechRadar reporting regional launch prices of £1,399.99 in the UK and AU$2,849 in Australia. These are review-era launch figures, not current checkout prices. Pricing and stock vary by region and retailer; check the live listing for the exact CG3EM configuration before buying. MSI’s US store product page is one place to check current availability.
| Buyer priority | How the Claw 8 EX AI+ fits |
|---|---|
| High-end handheld gaming performance | Strong fit: Tom’s Hardware reported leading performance among the handhelds it had tested at review time, with results dependent on game and settings. |
| OLED image quality | Poor fit: it uses an IPS-Level panel, not OLED. |
| Lightweight portability | Potentially poor fit: TechRadar reports 786g. |
| Value at launch pricing | Weak fit for price-sensitive buyers: review-era US launch pricing was about $1,800. |
| Access to multiple PC storefronts | Good fit if Windows flexibility matters, though the interface and update experience can feel less streamlined than a dedicated console. |
This is a performance-first purchase, not an automatic value pick. It suits someone willing to pay a substantial premium for a powerful Windows handheld with 32GB of memory and 1TB of storage. If the price, weight or non-OLED display matters more than top-end performance, those trade-offs may outweigh its benchmark results. No single test establishes how it will perform in every game, and current street prices should be checked at the time of purchase.
