The MSI Claw 8 AI+ A2VM is a Windows handheld built around a large, fast screen, 32GB of memory, Intel Arc graphics and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Its strongest case is hardware flexibility and gaming performance: Windows Central’s reviewer found it faster than two competing handhelds in the games tested. The trade-offs are short battery life in demanding games, fewer handheld-software customization options, and a rear casing the reviewer found uncomfortable to hold.
It makes the most sense if you want a high-refresh Windows handheld and expect to play near a power outlet. If long unplugged gaming sessions, a lower price or extensive handheld controls are priorities, weigh those compromises before buying.
What hardware does the MSI Claw 8 AI+ include?
The A2VM is an 8-inch Windows 11 handheld. MSI’s U.S. specification page lists a 1920×1200 16:10 IPS-level touchscreen with a 120Hz refresh rate and variable refresh rate (VRR), an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, Intel Arc 140V graphics, 32GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory and an 80Wh battery. The configuration table lists 1TB and 2TB NVMe Gen4x4 2230 SSD options. MSI notes that specifications can vary by model and region, so confirm the storage and other details on the exact listing you are considering.

The U.S. specification page lists the Polar Tempest Edition at 1.75 lb and includes a 65W AC adapter. Its charging information describes USB-C Power Delivery support, with charging rates that vary by device state; MSI recommends an MSI PD charger rather than promising identical results with every third-party adapter. MSI’s U.S. specifications are the best place to check a particular regional SKU.

MSI’s December 3, 2024 announcement described the A2VM with 32GB memory, up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, and a weight of 795g. Those launch-announcement details are not universal configuration guarantees: MSI says specifications and appearance may vary by model and country. The announcement and the current regional specification page may therefore describe different configurations.
What are the MSI Claw 8 AI+’s main advantages?
Large, high-refresh display
The 8-inch 1920×1200 display offers more screen area than a smaller handheld panel, while 120Hz and VRR support allow a high refresh rate and variable refresh. Windows Central reviewer Rebecca Spear described the IPS display as attractive, with good color and contrast. The benefit depends on the game: a 120Hz panel does not mean every demanding title will run at 120 frames per second.
Gaming performance in one reviewer’s tests
In its testing, Windows Central reported higher gaming frame rates on the Claw 8 AI+ than on the ROG Ally and Legion Go. That is a review-specific comparison, not a guarantee across games, drivers, power profiles or competing configurations. Treat it as an encouraging result rather than a universal ranking.

Hall Effect controls and useful ports
MSI specifies Hall Effect joysticks and triggers; Spear praised the responsive joysticks. The two Thunderbolt 4 ports provide options for charging and connecting accessories, while the microSD reader can expand storage for compatible cards. The ports also make a USB-C dock a possible way to connect a display and peripherals, though compatibility depends on the dock and the intended setup.
Windows flexibility
Windows 11 gives the handheld access to PC applications and multiple game launchers. That flexibility is useful if your games and tools are spread across services, but it comes with a less console-like software experience than a tightly controlled handheld interface.
What are the main drawbacks?
Demanding games can empty the battery quickly
In Windows Central’s March 22, 2025 review, Spear measured 2 hours 10 minutes playing Cyberpunk 2077 at maximum TDP with the display at about 200 nits. The review also reported sessions as short as about 1 hour 47 minutes, depending on the game. These are one reviewer’s results under stated conditions, not guaranteed runtimes for every title or setting. For longer demanding sessions, plan to play plugged in or consider a docked setup.

MSI’s advertised “28+ hours” refers to 1080p video playback under a different, low-power test configuration—not gaming. MSI’s footnote specifies a 256V processor, FHD 60Hz display, 1TB SSD, 16GB RAM, 150 cd/m² brightness, disabled lighting and Bluetooth, and Super Battery mode. That setup differs from the 258V/32GB configuration listed on MSI’s U.S. specification page, and its video-playback result should not be used to estimate gaming endurance. The conditions are described in MSI’s product overview.
Handheld software offers fewer customization choices
Windows Central found that MSI Center M offers fewer customization options than some other handheld programs. Windows still provides broad access to PC software and launchers, but buyers who want extensive controls in the handheld-specific layer may find that interface limiting.
The rear casing may not feel comfortable
Spear praised the balanced design and responsive controls but found the rear casing texture and vents unpleasant against the hands. That is a reviewer’s tactile impression, so comfort may vary with grip and hand size; it is worth considering if you expect long sessions holding the device.

The launch price is not a current price check
Windows Central listed $899.99 as the U.S. launch price for its reviewed 1TB configuration in March 2025. This is historical context, not a current retail quote. Check current local pricing and availability before judging whether the hardware is good value.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the MSI Claw 8 AI+ worth buying?
It is a stronger fit for someone who values an 8-inch high-refresh screen, Windows game-launcher flexibility, 32GB of memory, Hall Effect controls and two Thunderbolt 4 ports—and is comfortable charging during longer demanding games. Its hardware is compelling, but the review’s battery results and software and comfort criticisms matter more if you often play away from an outlet or want a highly customizable handheld interface.

When comparing alternatives, use the same games and similar power settings and screen brightness for battery or performance claims. Also compare memory and storage configurations, display size and refresh rate, weight and ergonomics, software controls, ports, and the current price in your region. Without comparable tests and up-to-date prices, the review’s performance result and launch price cannot establish a universal winner or today’s best value.
