MSI Afterburner does not have a verified, current NVIDIA feature called “out-of-warranty mode” that unlocks hidden controls on every card. MSI documents a separate Unlock voltage control setting, but whether voltage, power, temperature, clock, or fan controls are available depends on the GPU, its board implementation, and driver support. The historical setting named UnofficialOverclockingMode is not established by the available evidence as a supported way to unlock controls on current NVIDIA GPUs.
What does “out-of-warranty mode” mean in MSI Afterburner?
“Out-of-warranty mode” is not a feature name confirmed in MSI’s current documentation. The phrase appears to conflate two different things: Afterburner’s documented voltage-control option and a legacy configuration field called UnofficialOverclockingMode.
MSI’s tutorial describes controls for voltage, clocks, power and temperature limits, and fans, but their availability varies by GPU and driver. The presence of a setting in Afterburner does not mean every NVIDIA card supports that adjustment. MSI’s current documentation does not endorse the legacy field as a universal NVIDIA unlock.
How to enable voltage control where your GPU supports it
- Open MSI Afterburner and select Settings. On the General tab, find the voltage-control and voltage-monitoring options described in MSI’s tutorial, [Graphics Card] How to Use MSI Afterburner.
- Enable the relevant option. Choose the voltage-control option if you want to adjust voltage, or voltage monitoring if you only want to display it. The exact options available can vary by card.
- Apply the change and restart Afterburner if prompted. Check whether the intended control or reading is now available. If it remains greyed out or absent, the software setting has not overridden a card, firmware, or driver limitation.
- Tune cautiously and observe results. MSI recommends comparing frequency, voltage, temperature, and benchmark results while tuning. Change settings incrementally and stop if the card becomes unstable or temperatures rise beyond what you consider acceptable.
These steps apply to MSI’s documented voltage options; they are not a guarantee that voltage adjustment will be exposed on a particular GPU.

Why an Afterburner control may be greyed out or missing
Afterburner’s available controls depend on the card model and board design, the driver, and the version of the utility. A laptop GPU or a board with different firmware may expose a different set of options than a desktop card. The missing item also matters: voltage monitoring and voltage adjustment are separate from power limits, fan control, and clock adjustment.
- Voltage monitoring is missing: the card or its driver may not provide the reading to Afterburner.
- Voltage adjustment is unavailable: the GPU’s design, firmware, or driver support may not expose adjustment, even if monitoring is possible.
- Power, fan, or clock controls are unavailable: support is specific to the GPU and board implementation; a general Afterburner setting cannot guarantee access.
Check the GPU manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model and consult MSI’s official tutorial for the relevant Afterburner options. Do not treat editing a configuration file as a universal fix: the available historical evidence for UnofficialOverclockingMode is AMD/ATI-oriented, not confirmation of current NVIDIA behavior.

Does UnofficialOverclockingMode work on NVIDIA?
That is not established by the available documentation. An archived revision history describes an unofficial overclocking code path for AMD display drivers, and a user-maintained configuration sample places the field in its ATI/AMD section. Neither source confirms that changing it enables controls on current NVIDIA GPUs or recent Afterburner versions.

Will overclocking with Afterburner void a GPU warranty?
MSI’s official tutorial, dated May 21, 2024, says: “While overclocking is generally safe, any damage caused during this process is not covered by warranty, so exercise caution.” That is MSI’s warning; it should not be read as a universal statement about every GPU maker, warranty, or country. Check the warranty terms for your specific card and region.

Download the utility from MSI’s official Afterburner page or from Guru3D, which MSI also names as a download source. MSI warns about fake Afterburner sites, so avoid lookalike download pages. The product page listed versions 4.6.6 Final and 4.6.7 Beta, both released in September 2026, when it was checked; version availability changes, so verify the latest release on MSI’s page.
