A missing Teams button is not always a broken installation. Microsoft has been changing the desktop layout, app bar, app discovery, and channel labels. In particular, chats and channels can now be displayed in either a combined or separate view, while app labels may be hidden even though the apps are still present.
Use the checks below in order: identify the current layout, find the control through Teams’ updated navigation, then repair or clear local app data only if the interface is genuinely malfunctioning.
1. Check whether Teams is using Combined or Separate view
The current Teams chat and channel experience supports two layouts:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall| Layout | What you see | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Combined | Chats, teams, and channels appear in one list. | Use the combined list or the Teams and channels quick-navigation bar. |
| Separate | Chat and Teams are presented as distinct views. | Open Chat for conversations or Teams for teams and channels. |
To change the layout:
- At the top of the chat list, select More list options (…) .
- Select Customize view.
- Choose Combined or Separate.
In Combined view, the Teams and channels navigation bar can become bold even when the relevant channels are not currently visible in the list. Select it rather than assuming that a channel or the Teams app has disappeared.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
If you are using Combined view, the standalone Teams app may not appear in the location where older instructions tell you to find it. That is a layout difference, not proof that Teams was uninstalled.
2. Do not mistake a hidden label for a missing button
Microsoft changed the desktop app bar in April 2026. In the simplified app bar, text labels are hidden by default. A familiar button may therefore appear only as an icon.
Move the pointer over an icon to display its tooltip. If the tooltip identifies the app you need, the control is present. You can also use Teams’ app-discovery tools instead of relying on a permanently labeled left rail. Microsoft introduced a new list view for browsing and launching apps in June 2026, so older guides that say every app should always be visible on the left are no longer reliable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf an app is genuinely absent, open the app list or discovery view and search for its name. Whether you can add or use a particular app can still depend on your organization’s Teams policies.
3. Find channel files under Shared, not Files
In January 2026, Microsoft renamed the channel Files tab to Shared. To open documents and links shared in a channel:
- Open the relevant team and channel.
- Select Shared at the top of the channel.
If a guide tells you to select Files, it is describing the older interface. The rename does not mean that the channel’s documents have been deleted.

4. Use Settings search instead of hunting through categories
For settings such as notifications, appearance, or dark mode, use the built-in settings search:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right area of Teams.
- Select Settings.
- Enter a term such as
notifications, dark mode, orappearancein the settings search bar. - Open the matching result and change the option.
This is especially useful after a layout update moves an option from the category where you previously found it.
5. Restart Teams before clearing anything
If a button is missing from one session but the layout settings look correct, quit Teams completely and reopen it. On Windows, right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar and select Quit. Do not simply close the window if Teams remains running in the notification area.
On macOS, quit the application with Command (⌘)-Q. Then start Teams again and check whether the navigation has repopulated.
Also test Teams on the web if your organization allows it. If the button is present in the browser but missing in the desktop client, the problem is probably local Teams data or the desktop installation rather than your account’s team membership.
6. Reset the new Teams app on Windows
Use this option when Teams opens but its interface remains corrupted or fails to retain normal navigation. Resetting removes Teams app data, including personalization settings, so expect to configure some preferences again.

- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Teams.
- Select More options (…) next to it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Reset.
Start Teams again after the reset and sign in if requested. The reset is for the new Teams app; it is not the same procedure as deleting the old Classic Teams cache.
7. Clear the correct Teams cache
Do not use %appdata%MicrosoftTeams as a universal fix. Microsoft documents different cache locations for Classic Teams and New Teams.
New Teams on Windows
- Right-click the Teams icon on the taskbar and select Quit.
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Paste this path into Run:
%userprofile%appdatalocalPackagesMSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalCacheMicrosoftMSTeams
- Select OK.
- Delete the files and folders inside that directory.
- Restart Teams.
The first launch can take longer because Teams must rebuild its cache.
Classic Teams on Windows
- Quit Teams completely.
- Press Windows logo key + R.
- Enter:
%appdata%MicrosoftTeams
- Select OK.
- Delete all files and folders in the directory.
- Restart Teams.
Only use this path when you are dealing with Classic Teams. It is not the current cache location for the new Windows client.
New Teams on macOS
- Quit Teams with Command (⌘)-Q.
- Open Finder → Applications → Utilities → Terminal.
- Run these commands:
rm -rf ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teams
rm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
- Open Teams again.
Classic Teams on macOS
Quit Teams, open Terminal, and run:
rm -r ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
Then restart Teams. Be careful when using rm: verify the command exactly before pressing Enter. Clearing local data can remove cached sign-in state and personal configuration, even though it does not delete the cloud files stored in your teams and channels.
8. Troubleshoot “Something went wrong” at launch
If the new Teams client will not launch and displays “Something went wrong,” the issue may be deeper than a missing navigation button. Microsoft identifies several Windows causes:

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
- The Cookies or Cache shell folders are configured as reparse points.
TEMPorTMPpoints to a reparse point.- The account lacks read permissions for required AppData folders.
- AppData folders have been changed to reparse points.
Microsoft provides a diagnostic PowerShell script named TeamsLaunchCheck.ps1 to automate checks for these launch conditions. Obtain the script and follow the Microsoft Learn procedure for using it; there is no single universal command line that applies to every download or administrator configuration.

9. When the problem is an account or policy issue
If Teams works normally on the web and on another computer, but one desktop client still lacks a control after a reset, check these possibilities:
- You are signed into a different work, school, or personal account.
- You are looking at a team or channel where you do not have membership or permission.
- Your organization has disabled an app or feature through a Teams policy.
- The administrator has not yet applied a newly assigned team or app permission to your account.
- The desktop client is on a different release channel from the browser or another user’s computer.
Ask an administrator to confirm your account, team membership, and app policy before repeatedly deleting cache data. Cache clearing cannot restore an app that your organization has intentionally blocked.
Recommended order of fixes
- Check Customize view and switch between Combined and Separate.
- Look for icon-only controls and use the updated app list.
- Remember that channel files are now under Shared.
- Quit and restart Teams.
- Use Teams Settings search to locate moved options.
- Reset the new Windows app if its interface is corrupted.
- Clear the cache using the path for your exact Teams version and operating system.
- Use
TeamsLaunchCheck.ps1or contact IT for launch errors and permission-related problems.
FAQ
Why did the Teams app disappear from the left side?
Teams may be using the Combined chat-and-channels layout, where a standalone Teams location is not shown in the old position. Select More list options (…) at the top of the chat list, choose Customize view, and try Separate if you want distinct Chat and Teams views. Also check the updated app list because app labels may be hidden.
Why can’t I find the Files tab in a Teams channel?
Microsoft renamed the channel Files tab to Shared in January 2026. Open the channel and select Shared to view files and links posted there.

Will clearing the Teams cache delete my documents?
The documented cache procedures remove local cached data, not the cloud files stored in your teams and channels. However, resetting the new Teams app deletes app data and personalization settings, and you may need to sign in or reconfigure preferences again.
Which Teams cache folder should I delete on Windows?
For New Teams, use `%userprofile%appdatalocalPackagesMSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbweLocalCacheMicrosoftMSTeams`. For Classic Teams, use `%appdata%MicrosoftTeams`. Quit Teams first; the Classic path is not a universal fix for current installations.
What should I do if Teams says “Something went wrong” when starting?
Microsoft lists problems involving reparse points, TEMP or TMP, AppData permissions, and changed AppData folders as possible causes. Use Microsoft’s TeamsLaunchCheck.ps1 diagnostic procedure, or ask IT to investigate before changing permissions or environment variables.
The Bottom Line
First treat the changed interface as a possible layout or labeling change: check Customize view, inspect icon-only app-bar controls, use the updated app list, and look under Shared for channel files. Only then reset or clear local data, using the cache procedure for the correct Teams generation. If Teams cannot launch, or if the missing control affects only a managed work account, the cause may be permissions or an administrator policy rather than the interface itself.
Microsoft’s current layout details are documented in its new chat and channels experience guide. Cache and launch troubleshooting are covered in Microsoft Learn’s Teams cache guidance and new Teams launch-issues guide.
