For many enterprises connecting branches to cloud services over different kinds of circuits, SD-WAN offers more flexibility: it can apply centralized policies and steer traffic across available links. But it does not make MPLS obsolete. MPLS may still suit sites or applications with specific service requirements, limited alternatives, or contracts that make an immediate change impractical. Because SD-WAN is an overlay, it can also use MPLS as one of its underlying links.
What is the difference between MPLS and SD-WAN?
MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) is a forwarding technology commonly provided as a carrier-managed service over provisioned circuits. Depending on the service and design, it can provide private paths with defined service characteristics.
SD-WAN is an overlay and policy system for managing traffic across available network connections. It can use application-aware policies and centralized management to decide how traffic travels over those connections. Those links might include internet circuits, MPLS, or other available transports.

They are not exact substitutes at the same architectural layer: MPLS can be the transport beneath an SD-WAN overlay. In practice, MPLS often emphasizes a carrier-managed path and its service terms, while SD-WAN emphasizes policy, traffic steering, and the ability to use multiple transports.

How do MPLS and SD-WAN compare?
| Decision factor | MPLS | SD-WAN |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud and SaaS access | Depending on the network design, traffic may use the private WAN or pass through centralized internet egress. | Can support direct cloud access and policy-based steering, subject to the available links and security design. |
| Application performance | Provisioned paths and carrier service terms may suit applications that need predictable behavior. | Can monitor and steer traffic across links, but cannot improve the underlying quality of a poor link. Validate loss, latency, and jitter for important applications. |
| Resilience | Assess backup circuits and carrier design at each site; MPLS alone does not establish that a site has an effective backup path. | Multiple links and automatic steering may improve resilience when configured and tested. The result depends on link quality and diversity. |
| Security | A private transport is not, by itself, a substitute for encryption or other security controls. | Features depend on the product, license, and configuration. Verify encryption, firewalling, segmentation, identity, and threat controls. |
| Cost | Account for bandwidth, carrier charges, contract commitments, and termination terms. | Account for edge devices, subscriptions, circuits, security services, support, operations, and migration. There is no universal savings figure established here. |
| Migration and operations | Existing applications, network designs, and contracts may complicate a full replacement. | Requires planning for controllers, routing, traffic policies, redundancy, circuits, and branch rollout. A staged or hybrid design may be appropriate. |
When should you choose SD-WAN?
SD-WAN is a strong candidate when you need to connect branches and cloud applications across a mix of transports and want centrally managed traffic policies. It may also help direct selected traffic to cloud services without sending every flow through a central data center, if the security and network design support that approach.
Before choosing it, confirm that the links available at each location can meet application needs. Traffic steering can select among links, but it cannot turn an unreliable or inadequate circuit into a good one. Test important applications against measured loss, latency, and jitter rather than assuming the label “SD-WAN” guarantees performance.

When does MPLS still make sense?
- Application requirements: Retain or include MPLS when measured application needs align with the service characteristics in a carrier contract.
- Site connectivity: A location may lack suitable alternatives, making an existing or available MPLS service valuable.
- Legacy dependencies: A critical application or established network design may rely on the private service.
- Contract economics: Renewal dates, termination charges, or remaining commitments may make immediate replacement unattractive.
These are reasons to assess MPLS for particular sites or traffic, not proof that it universally outperforms SD-WAN. A hybrid WAN can keep MPLS for selected applications or locations while using SD-WAN policies across MPLS and other transports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes SD-WAN cost less or provide better reliability?
Neither outcome is automatic. Total cost depends on the circuits, carrier terms, equipment, subscriptions, security architecture, support, operations, and migration work. Compare costs by site and include contract termination or renewal terms; the available evidence does not establish a neutral, general 2026 savings figure.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Reliability depends on the actual link design and how it is configured and tested. Multiple connections and automated steering can help maintain service when a link fails or degrades, but only if the alternate path is sufficiently independent and capable. For either approach, evaluate the service against measured application needs and the applicable service-level agreement, not the technology name alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you plan a move to SD-WAN?
- Inventory the network: Record sites, applications, current traffic paths, and application requirements.
- Review contracts: Check service levels, renewal windows, and early termination commitments before changing circuits.
- Set the operating design: Decide where controllers will run, how they will be made redundant, what scale is required, which firewall requirements apply, and who owns day-to-day operations.
- Map traffic and connectivity: Document current and proposed circuits, routing, segmentation, quality-of-service policies, direct internet access, and SaaS or IaaS paths.
- Choose a rollout sequence: Decide whether to migrate in stages or use a hybrid period, then test important applications under normal conditions and during link failure.
- Compare full costs: Include hardware, software, connectivity, security, support, migration, and ongoing operations for each site.
- Validate the result: Check performance against measured application requirements and the promised SLA.
Migration planning should account for circuits, routing, traffic paths, QoS, controller deployment, branch services, and SaaS or IaaS access. These are general planning considerations; implementation details can vary by platform and release.
