MPC can let an AI agent propose or initiate a transaction while requiring a separate service or human-held key share to participate before it is signed. But MPC does not inherently make an agent autonomous, and multisig does not inherently prevent autonomy: either design can allow unattended signing, enforce policy checks, or require human approval. What matters is who holds signing authority, what threshold must be met, and whether the required policy or approval gate can actually be bypassed.
How MPC and multisig produce a signature
Both approaches divide signing authority, but they represent that authority differently. The MPC Alliance describes threshold cryptography as supporting an m-of-n quorum, including configurations that require particular participants. BitGo’s documentation illustrates the distinction in its own wallet workflows.
Multisig: separate keys, separate signatures
Each participant holds a complete private key and signs independently. A wallet script or smart contract checks whether enough signatures meet its rule—for example, a 2-of-3 quorum. Depending on the chain and wallet construction, the rule and signers may be visible on-chain.

Threshold MPC/TSS: shares cooperate in a signing protocol
Participants hold key shares and exchange messages in an interactive protocol to produce a signature without reconstructing the full private key. In BitGo’s documented 2-of-3 example, two of three shares cooperate; the complete key is not assembled during signing.

Threshold signing is not the same as basic secret sharing. A secret-sharing scheme reconstructs a secret from enough shares; threshold signing uses shares to perform the cryptographic operation without first reconstructing the private key.
What MPC changes about agent autonomy
MPC can separate the agent’s role in requesting a transaction from another participant’s role in authorizing it. That other participant might be a policy service or a human holding a required share. A threshold only creates a meaningful gate if the agent cannot meet it alone and cannot route around the required signer.

Sardis documents one example: a 2-of-2 arrangement in which an agent-held share initiates a request and a provider policy engine checks configured conditions before co-signing. That describes Sardis’s implementation, not a guarantee inherent to MPC or a property of every MPC wallet.
Multisig can also keep an agent-held signer from acting alone. A quorum requiring keys held by different people or services can impose an approval boundary just as a threshold MPC arrangement can. The useful comparison is therefore not “autonomous MPC versus non-autonomous multisig,” but who can authorize a transaction and under what conditions.

Choose the signing model to match the risk
Unattended signing
An agent and a service-held share can sign without a person present in some product configurations. Vultisig documents a Fast Vault model that enables unattended agent signing. Treat this as a deliberate risk choice: define the funds available to the agent and the maximum loss the system can tolerate.
Policy-bound signing
The agent proposes an action, and a required verifier or co-signer checks it against configured rules. Those rules should be concrete: allowed assets and destinations, spending limits, timing, and when human approval is required. Specify who can change them, and ensure the agent cannot bypass the verifier by switching credentials or signing paths.

EIP-8196, a proposal dated March 2026, explores policy-bound signing and binding a policy hash to signed actions. It also identifies open questions, including audit costs and threshold containment. It is a proposal, not an established standard.
Human-approved signing
The agent prepares a transaction, but human-controlled shares or keys are needed to complete the threshold. This limits unattended action but adds a human availability requirement. Vultisig documents human-controlled shares as one possible agent-signing model; the same approval pattern can be built with multisig.

Compare the operational trade-offs
| Question | MPC/TSS | Multisig |
|---|---|---|
| What participants hold | Key shares used in an interactive protocol; the full private key need not be reconstructed. (BitGo) | Separate complete private keys that produce independent signatures. (BitGo) |
| Where authorization appears | The MPC Alliance describes MPC key management as off-chain, with policy changes decoupled from the ledger. Verify the specific wallet’s construction. | A script or contract may enforce the quorum on-chain, where it may be inspectable. This depends on the chain and wallet design. |
| Signing coordination | BitGo describes its TSS flow as synchronous, requiring real-time cooperation over multiple rounds. | BitGo describes its multisig flow as asynchronous: signers can create partial signatures independently and complete the transaction later. |
| Policy gate | A service or human share can be required, but only if the threshold and policy design make its participation mandatory. | A quorum can require other signers before the agent’s key is sufficient. Check signer identities and transaction rules. |
| Recovery and availability | Check backups, provider dependence, share refresh, and lost-share procedures. BitGo says its MPC recovery flow may require coordination with support. | Check key backups, quorum availability, and the wallet’s recovery procedure. BitGo describes multisig recovery as different from its MPC recovery flow. |
| Chain and transaction behavior | Verify supported chains, curves, protocols, and provider implementation; support is not universal. | Features and fees depend on the chain and wallet construction; multisig is not identical across chains. |
The timing and recovery descriptions in this table are BitGo’s documented workflows, not universal performance guarantees. Neither architecture is automatically faster, cheaper, safer, or more autonomous.
What MPC does not protect an agent from
Dividing key authority can reduce the risk associated with one complete private key, but it does not make an agent’s choices correct. Vultisig’s developer documentation puts it plainly: “MPC removes the complete private key as a single point of failure. It does not make an agent’s decisions correct.”
The agent can still select the wrong recipient, contract, route, amount, or strategy. Its developer remains responsible for securing prompts and tool calls, transaction parameters and credentials, monitoring activity, and being able to disable a compromised agent. Key protection and transaction-quality controls solve different problems.
Quick Recap
Questions to settle before deployment
- Who holds each key or share? Identify the agent, service, and human participants, including their backup arrangements.
- What exact threshold is required? Confirm whether the agent can satisfy it alone, and whether the required verifier or human is part of every signing path.
- Who sets and changes policy? Define allowed assets and destinations, spending limits, timing, and approval rules; restrict and audit policy changes.
- Can you revoke authority quickly? Establish how to disable an agent or credential and what happens to pending signing requests.
- What happens if a participant is offline or a share is lost? Confirm the recovery path, support dependencies, and whether the remaining participants can still meet the threshold.
- What will be visible and auditable? Determine whether the authorization rule, policy changes, approvals, and transaction history can be independently inspected in the actual wallet and chain setup.
