To connect an MP4 player to a computer, use a USB data cable that fits the exact model, unlock the player, and choose File Transfer if prompted. Then locate it on the computer and copy compatible files to the player’s designated folder. The precise cable, connection mode, folder, and Mac support vary by model, so use the player’s manual as the authority.
Before connecting, identify the player
“MP4 player” describes many kinds of portable media players; it does not guarantee a particular connector, USB mode, or file support. Find the model number on the device, its packaging, or its settings screen, then consult that model’s official manual. Sony notes that transfer methods differ among Walkman models: Sony Walkman transfer guidance.
Have a USB cable compatible with that model and capable of data transfer. A cable that only charges the player will not transfer files. Connect directly to a computer USB port when possible, rather than through a hub.
Connect the player and locate it
- Connect the cable. Plug the player into the computer using its supplied or model-compatible USB cable. If the player has a lock screen, unlock it.
- Choose the connection mode. If a prompt such as “Use USB for” appears, select File Transfer and confirm. The wording and available modes depend on the device. Sony documents this flow for applicable Walkman models in its USB connection instructions.
- Find the player. In Windows, open File Explorer and look under This PC or the portable-device list. The player may appear as a portable device rather than as a drive with a letter.
- On a Mac, check the model’s supported workflow. Do not assume every player will appear in Finder. SanDisk says its players using MTP are not supported on macOS, while MSC is supported on macOS and Windows; these statements apply to SanDisk’s guidance, not every player or operating-system configuration. Choose the right transfer method
Some players offer MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) or MSC (Mass Storage Class); others present a simpler File Transfer option. Where a device allows a choice, use the mode supported by both your computer and the player’s intended transfer method.

These are SanDisk’s descriptions of its player connection modes, not a guarantee about every manufacturer’s devices. Its guidance says MTP devices do not require drive-letter assignment or safe eject; follow the instructions for your own player and computer.
Copy music or video to the player
- Open the player in File Explorer or the supported transfer application.
- Choose the destination folder specified in the manual. Depending on the model, this may be a folder such as Music or Video; folder names and requirements are not universal.
- Drag and drop the files, or use the manufacturer-recommended software. For example, SanDisk describes copying selected music files into a player’s Music folder, while Sony documents a Windows Explorer workflow for a particular modern Walkman model: Sony’s transfer instructions and SanDisk’s file-transfer guidance.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before unplugging the player. SanDisk and Sony both advise disconnecting only after transfer completion.
Confirm the files can play
A successful copy does not mean the player can decode the file. Check the exact model’s supported audio and video formats, and whether it accepts files protected by digital rights management (DRM). SanDisk’s instructions distinguish models that support DRM-free AAC/M4A from models that require those files to be converted to MP3; the supported formats depend on the model. Use compatible, legally accessible files and the manufacturer’s supported conversion options rather than attempting to bypass copy protection. See SanDisk’s format and transfer guidance.

If the computer does not recognize the player
Try the low-risk checks first. Avoid formatting the player as an initial fix: formatting can erase content. Sony lists formatting only as a later, model-specific troubleshooting option in its recognition troubleshooting guidance; back up files and consult the exact manual before considering it.
- Check the player and prompt: unlock it, accept any USB or file-transfer prompt, and look in settings for a USB connection mode if no prompt appears.
- Check the cable: reseat both ends and, if possible, try the cable supplied for the player. Verify that the cable supports data transfer. Sony notes that some USB-C-to-USB-C connections may fail on applicable models, with a model-specific workaround described in its connection guidance.
- Change the port: connect directly to the computer instead of a hub, then try another USB port. Sony lists hubs and connection issues among possible causes for applicable devices: Sony troubleshooting steps.
- Look in the right place: on Windows, check the portable-device list as well as This PC. A player in MTP mode may not appear as a drive letter.
- Allow time only when the model calls for it: Sony’s legacy-model troubleshooting article says some cited players can take up to five minutes to be recognized or begin charging. That timing is specific to those models, not a general waiting rule.
- If a transfer fails partway through: check available internal or memory-card storage. Sony directs users of certain models to Storage settings to inspect device and SD-card capacity.
- Check the manual for software or driver requirements: any additional setup is model- and operating-system-specific.
Using a microSD card as the destination
Some players have a microSD slot; many do not. On supported Walkman models, Sony describes choosing internal storage or a microSD card as the transfer destination and checking capacity in settings. Confirm that your model supports the card type and capacity before using one. A card slot alone does not establish which cards the player accepts.
