The right moving truck is the smallest vehicle that safely holds your actual furniture, appliances, boxes and awkward items with room to load them securely. Start with a provider’s room recommendation, then confirm the cargo box’s interior length, width, height and cubic-foot rating. A truck called “26-foot” is not automatically equivalent across companies, and a close fit can fail when a household has unusually bulky furniture or a large box count.
U-Haul’s sizing guide frames the decision as, “What size moving truck do I need?” The practical answer comes from an itemized inventory and the exact vehicle assigned to your reservation—not from bedroom count alone.
How moving-truck sizes are labeled
Rental companies usually market trucks by exterior class or nominal length, then attach a room or bedroom estimate. Those labels are useful for a first pass, but they are recommendations rather than guarantees. Two trucks with the same advertised length can have different interior widths, heights, wheel-well intrusions, door openings and usable volumes.
U-Haul’s consumer ladder lists 10-, 15-, 20- and 26-foot trucks. Penske’s comparison lineup uses a cargo van plus 12-, 16-, 22- and 26-foot trucks. Because the ladders do not match, compare the published cargo dimensions and volume for the vehicle available at your pickup location.

Published size comparison
The figures below are the providers’ own specifications and fit guidance, checked in 2026. They are not independent measurements. Penske says its specifications are based on commonly rented vehicles and can vary by make, model and year.
| Provider and vehicle | Provider fit guidance | Interior or cargo dimensions | Published cargo volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| U-Haul 10-foot truck | Studio or one-bedroom apartment | 9’11" × 6’4" × 6’2" | 402 cu. ft. |
| U-Haul 15-foot truck | One-bedroom home or two-bedroom apartment | 15′ × 7’8" × 7’2" | 764 cu. ft. |
| U-Haul 20-foot truck | Two-bedroom home or three-bedroom apartment | 19’6" × 7’8" × 7’2" | 1,016 cu. ft. |
| U-Haul 26-foot truck | Three- to four-bedroom home | 26’2" × 8’2" × 8’3" | 1,682 cu. ft. |
| Penske cargo van | Up to one room | 11’11" × 4’6" × 6’9" | 404 cu. ft. |
| Penske 12-foot truck | One to two rooms | 12′ × 6’6" × 6’1" | 450 cu. ft. |
| Penske 16-foot truck | Two to three rooms | 16′ × 7’7" × 6’6" | 800 cu. ft. |
| Penske 22-foot truck | Three to five rooms on the comparison page; up to three bedrooms in the sizing guide | 21’11" × 8’1" × 8’1" | 1,200 cu. ft. |
| Penske 26-foot truck | Five to seven rooms on the comparison page; up to five bedrooms in the sizing guide | 25’11" × 8’1" × 8’1" | 1,700 cu. ft. |
The 402-cu.-ft. U-Haul figure and the 404-cu.-ft. Penske cargo-van figure look similar, but their shapes are not. The Penske van is much narrower, while the U-Haul truck is shorter in listed interior length but wider. A long sofa, tall wardrobe or wide appliance may fit one configuration and not the other even when the volume numbers are close.
Why bedroom and room estimates can be wrong
A room count says little about how densely a home is furnished. A sparsely furnished two-bedroom apartment may occupy less space than a one-bedroom home with a sectional sofa, king-size bed, large dining set, workshop shelving and outdoor furniture. Boxes also vary dramatically in size and weight.
- Large furniture can consume a disproportionate amount of floor length and prevent efficient stacking.
- Appliances and solid wood pieces add weight before the truck is physically full.
- Outdoor furniture, exercise equipment, lawn tools and garage contents are often omitted from bedroom-based estimates.
- Oddly shaped or very tall items create unusable gaps around them.
- A long move may require more protective space so furniture is not crushed against the walls or other loads.
Use the provider’s recommendation as a starting range, not permission to skip an inventory.

Choose a truck step by step
1. List the items that determine the shape
Write down beds and mattresses, sofas and chairs, dining tables, dressers, bookcases, major appliances, shelving, outdoor furniture and anything unusually long, tall or fragile. Record dimensions for pieces that might be difficult to rotate through a door or stack.
2. Count boxes by approximate size
Separate book boxes, standard medium cartons, large lightweight cartons and wardrobe boxes. A room total without a box estimate can understate the load, particularly after a basement, attic or garage is included.
3. Identify the limiting dimension
Compare your longest items with cargo length, your widest items with cargo width and your tallest items with interior height. Account for the space taken by wheel wells and the clearance needed to close the door. Cubic feet describes total volume; it does not guarantee that every shape can be arranged inside it.

Look for the vehicle’s payload or load-capacity rating in the reservation details. A volume listing alone does not establish how much weight is safe. Concentrate heavy items low and toward the front of the cargo box, while staying within the provider’s posted limits.

5. Compare the actual available vehicles
Inventory can differ by location and date. Ask which make and model is assigned or most likely, and request the cargo dimensions for that vehicle when your load is a close fit. Do not assume that a displayed class guarantees one exact body configuration.
6. Add a margin for loading
Furniture must be protected, tied down and arranged so the doors can close. If your estimate fills every cubic foot on paper, move up a size or reduce the load before pickup. A small amount of unused space is less costly than a second trip or an unsafe stack.
What the dimensions mean in practice
Cargo length is the floor distance available for rows of furniture and boxes. Width determines whether two items can sit side by side and how easily you can create a central walkway while loading. Height matters for stacking cartons and standing mattresses or dressers safely.

Penske lists 450 cu. ft. for its 12-foot truck and 1,700 cu. ft. for its 26-foot truck. Those values are not a standardized test; each provider may calculate usable space around a different body design and equipment layout.

- Cover and Protect -- Our shipping blankets feature non-woven fabric over cotton batting to offer an excellent combination of extremely durable and superior protection, which provides extra flexibility and protection when securely wrapping up items or sliding furniture across floors
- Durable -- Packing blankets for moving weighing approximately 2.7 pounds apiece, Zig-zag stitching holds inner cushioning in place for consistent padding protection and prolonged pad life. Double stitched binding completely around on front and back is highly resilient to tears and built-to-last.
- Multi-Purpose -- Ideal for both professional and do-it-yourself moving, these versatile, general purpose blankets are well suited for safe, breathable protection for items in storage. Moving pads can protect floors and car upholstery, road maintenance, greenhouse insulation, and tree antifreeze.
- Dual-Sided -- Packing pads made of quality double-sided construction allows for added convenience and protection when securely wrapping up items or sliding furniture across floors, cloth binding protects the edges from fraying. The small 40" x 72" moving & packing blankets can be washed in a suitable washing machine.
When two options are close, prioritize the dimensions that constrain your largest pieces, then use cubic feet to judge the remaining boxes. For example, a truck with adequate volume but insufficient interior height may force a tall cabinet on its side, which can create damage or clearance problems.
Loading equipment and route considerations
Ramps and loading height
Penske lists ramps on its 16-, 22- and 26-foot trucks. A ramp can reduce the lift required for appliances and stacked boxes, but confirm that the assigned vehicle includes one. The sources do not establish a universal rule for choosing a truck based on driving comfort, parking, route restrictions or insurance; verify those details for your route and rental.
Furniture pads and hand trucks
Pads help protect furniture from scratches, dirt and soil. A hand truck can move several boxes at once and reduce the effort of handling heavy cartons. Neither item increases the truck’s stated cargo volume or payload. Secure loads so pads and equipment cannot shift during transit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTowing an additional trailer
For a load that exceeds the apparent capacity of a U-Haul 26-foot truck, U-Haul suggests considering a 6-by-12-foot cargo trailer with that truck. This is a provider-specific option, not a universal solution. Confirm that the truck is approved and equipped for the trailer, check the combined weight, and verify availability and local rules before reserving it.

Special cases that change the estimate
Small apartment with bulky furniture
A studio with a king bed, sectional sofa and heavy dining table may need more than the smallest room recommendation. Measure those pieces first; their footprint can matter more than the number of rooms.
Dense two-bedroom household
Books, collectibles, workshop tools and fully furnished rooms add both boxes and weight. Compare the 15- and 20-foot U-Haul capacities or the 16-foot Penske option against your inventory instead of assuming the lower bedroom label is sufficient.
Large home with garage and outdoor contents
Garage shelving, patio sets, lawn equipment and a large appliance collection can push a three- or four-bedroom move beyond a nominal estimate. Check payload early and ask whether a larger truck or an approved trailer is available.
One unusually long item
A kayak, large artwork, commercial shelving run or long workbench can determine the required cargo length even when total volume is modest. Confirm the uninterrupted floor length and door opening of the assigned truck.
U-Haul’s 29-foot listing versus its 26-foot guide
U-Haul’s size chart also shows a 29-foot option labeled for a four- to six-bedroom home, while its separate guide calls the 26-foot truck the largest U-Haul moving truck. That conflict likely reflects different page contexts or fleet categories. Do not combine the 29-foot chart entry with the consumer guide as though they describe one standard vehicle. Ask the rental location which vehicle category is actually available and request its dimensions before relying on it.
Verify the reservation before pickup
- Review the confirmation for the vehicle class, stated cargo dimensions, payload rating and included equipment.
- Call the pickup location if the confirmation uses only a nominal length or room label.
- Provide an itemized list of your largest pieces and ask whether the assigned vehicle can accommodate them.
- At pickup, inspect the cargo box, door opening, ramp and tie-down points before loading.
- If the vehicle differs from the reserved configuration, recheck capacity and payload before accepting it.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Choosing by exterior length alone: compare usable interior dimensions and cubic feet instead.
- Counting bedrooms but not possessions: inventory garage, attic, patio and storage contents.
- Ignoring weight: check payload and distribute heavy items low and forward.
- Planning a perfect paper fit: leave room for pads, straps, door clearance and safe stacking.
- Assuming fleet specifications are universal: verify make, model, year and the vehicle assigned to your date and location.
- Treating a hand truck or pads as extra capacity: use them for handling and protection only.
- Adding a trailer without checking compatibility: confirm towing approval, combined weight, availability and route requirements.
A practical decision checklist
- Have I listed every large, heavy, tall or awkward item?
- Do I know approximately how many boxes I have and what sizes they are?
- Does the cargo length fit my longest item without unsafe positioning?
- Are width and height sufficient after allowing for wheel wells and door clearance?
- Is the payload rating high enough for appliances, books and solid furniture?
- Does the actual vehicle include the ramp or equipment I need?
- Have I confirmed the assigned vehicle rather than relying only on a room label?
- Would a larger truck, a second trip or an approved trailer be safer than a tightly packed load?
When two choices remain, select the one whose published dimensions and payload leave a realistic loading margin. The best fit is the vehicle that accommodates your measured inventory safely, not necessarily the one with the shortest exterior length or the lowest room estimate.
