Use your actual inventory—not bedroom count alone—to estimate moving space. Measure or assign a cubic-foot estimate to furniture, appliances, boxes, garage items and outdoor belongings, add those figures, then compare the total with the published cargo volume, interior dimensions and payload of the exact truck you can reserve. A calculator is a planning aid, not a guarantee that everything will fit or a certified shipment-weight ticket.

The method below shows the arithmetic, a room-by-room worksheet, how calculator assumptions differ, and how to sanity-check the result against truck specifications.

What cubic feet means in a moving estimate

Cubic feet measure three-dimensional volume. For a rectangular item measured in feet, multiply length × width × height. A bookcase that is 3 feet long, 1 foot deep and 6 feet high occupies 18 cubic feet before considering how it will be packed.

When measurements are in inches, multiply the three dimensions and divide by 1,728, because one cubic foot contains 12 × 12 × 12 cubic inches.

cubic feet = (length in × width in × height in) ÷ 1,728

For example, a 24 × 18 × 16-inch carton has 6,912 cubic inches, or 4 cubic feet. This is the outside rectangular allowance; the contents may not fill every corner, and several cartons may nest differently when loaded.

Keep units consistent. Do not multiply two dimensions in feet by one dimension in inches, and do not use floor area as if it were volume. For an item that cannot be represented well by a box, measure the largest length, width and height that the mover must accommodate, or ask for a professional survey.

How to calculate cubic feet for an interstate move

An interstate shipment is easiest to estimate as an inventory, not as a whole-house measurement. Follow this sequence:

A complete organization system exclusive to RMOHRO.
  • WATER-RESISTANT & FOLDS TO 1" FLAT — FROM MOVING DAY TO UNDER-BED STORAGE: Coated woven fabric resists moisture, dust, and dirt, protecting your belongings from light rain on loading day and from damp closets or garages during long-term storage. When the move is done, each bag folds flat to about 1 inch thick — slip it under a bed, onto a closet shelf, or keep one in your trunk for the next move, seasonal swap, or camping trip.Lidded Storage Bins.
  1. List every item that is moving. Work room by room and include closets, hallways, attic areas, basement storage, garage shelving, bicycles, patio furniture, tools, appliances and packed bins.
  2. Record dimensions or choose an item allowance. Measure large or unusual pieces. For ordinary household goods, a calculator may provide a catalog allowance; record that it is an approximation rather than a measured volume.
  3. Convert each item to cubic feet. Apply length × width × height in feet, or divide an inch-based product by 1,728.
  4. Subtotal each room and storage area. Separate furniture, appliances and boxes so that omissions are visible.
  5. Add all subtotals. Keep a separate line for oversized items that could control truck choice even when their calculated volume is modest.
  6. Compare the total with the booked vehicle. Check published cargo volume, interior dimensions and payload for that specific vehicle and configuration.

A practical inventory worksheet

Area What to record Calculation or allowance Result
Living room Sofa, chairs, tables, media furniture, boxes Measure bulky pieces; use box dimensions for packed cartons Room subtotal in ft³
Kitchen Appliances, table, chairs, shelving, pantry cartons Measure appliances and use carton dimensions Room subtotal in ft³
Bedrooms Beds, dressers, wardrobes, desks, clothing boxes Measure furniture; count and size boxes Room subtotal in ft³
Garage or storage Tools, shelving, lawn equipment, bins, sports gear Measure irregular or dense items separately Area subtotal in ft³
Outdoor and oversized Patio sets, grills, play equipment, large mirrors or pianos Use maximum transport dimensions or obtain a survey Separate allowance

Illustrative arithmetic: a 7 × 3 × 3-foot sofa contributes 63 cubic feet; ten 4-cubic-foot cartons contribute 40 cubic feet; together they represent 103 cubic feet in the estimate. That example demonstrates the method, not a standard sofa size or a promise about loading efficiency.

Why rooms and bedrooms are only a starting point

Two homes with the same bedroom count can have radically different shipments. One may contain minimalist furniture and few cartons; another may include filled closets, a packed garage, bookcases, appliances and outdoor equipment. Room labels also conceal ceiling-height furniture, dense boxes and items stored outside living rooms.

Count what is actually moving. If something will be sold, donated, discarded or left behind, remove it from the inventory. If a closet, shed or storage unit is included, give it its own section instead of assuming it is represented by the room count.

What a three-bedroom example does—and does not—prove

Safebound’s Space Check example, published September 1, 2026, lists 102 items for a three-bedroom starter and assigns approximately 1,700 cubic feet under its planning allowance. The same example reports a 1,599-cubic-foot catalog subtotal. Those figures describe that tool’s particular inventory and assumptions; they are not the average volume of a three-bedroom home or a universal cubic-feet-per-bedroom rule.

No authoritative universal cubic-feet-per-room figure is established. Treat any room conversion as a provider-specific estimate and replace it with your own item list whenever truck selection, a long-distance quote or access planning depends on accuracy.

How calculator allowances differ

Online calculators often assign standard volumes to common furnishings and carton types. Move Trust Hub describes an itemized, room-by-room approach and uses 7 pounds per cubic foot as a planning estimate. It also states that actual weight changes with item density and packing style. Safebound describes a different item-based allowance method and cautions that its truck-fit view is not a guarantee.

Do not merge these methods into one industry formula. A catalog allowance is useful for planning when you lack a tape measure, but it can overstate or understate a real load because furniture shapes, nesting, protective wrapping and empty voids differ. For a high-value, unusually heavy or highly irregular shipment, request a mover’s inventory or survey.

How to use cubic feet to choose a truck

U-Haul’s current comparison page, accessed October 13, 2026, publishes the following cargo-volume figures and home-size comparisons for its truck classes:

  • RECYCLABLE, STACKABLE, AND REUSABLE: Our strong moving boxes are easier to keep organized in stacks, quick to break down, and store flat until ready to reuse
  • MEDIUM SIZE: 19-in x 14.5-in x 15.5-in, the versatile box in our range that works for nearly everything
Truck class Published cargo volume Provider’s home-size comparison
10-foot truck 402 ft³ Studio or one-bedroom apartment
15-foot truck 764 ft³ One-bedroom home or two-bedroom apartment
20-foot truck 1,016 ft³ Two-bedroom home
26-foot truck 1,682 ft³ Three- to four-bedroom home
29-foot truck 2,057 ft³ Four- to six-bedroom home

These are published capacities for that provider’s classes, not universal capacities for every rental company or every vehicle carrying the same nominal length. The home-size labels are guidance, not a promise that every household in that category will fit.

Five checks before booking

  1. Compare estimated volume. Put your itemized total beside the published cargo volume for the vehicle you can actually reserve.
  2. Check interior length, width and height. A wardrobe, appliance, safe or other tall piece may not fit through the door or stand inside even when the total cubic-foot arithmetic appears acceptable.
  3. Check payload. Dense books, tools, tile, exercise equipment and appliances can exceed the allowable load before the cargo area is full.
  4. Review the exact configuration. Interior dimensions and equipment can vary by model, location and availability. Confirm the rental listing and ask at pickup if the assigned vehicle differs.
  5. Plan a fallback. Depending on distance and timing, a larger vehicle, a compatible trailer or a second trip may be more practical than forcing an unsafe load.

U-Haul states that a 6-by-12-foot cargo trailer adds 18% more space when towed with its 26-foot truck. That is the company’s stated comparison for that combination, not a general trailer rule. Confirm towing compatibility, hitch requirements, payload and availability before relying on it.

Why volume alone can give the wrong answer

Volume assumes that the load can be packed efficiently into a rectangular cargo envelope. A sectional sofa, stair-step shelving, fragile glass, oddly shaped exercise equipment or a motorcycle creates unusable voids. Door openings, wheel wells and required walkways further reduce practical space. Conversely, nesting chairs or dismantling tables can improve utilization.

Weight is a separate constraint. Multiplying a volume estimate by Move Trust Hub’s 7-pound-per-cubic-foot planning figure can provide a rough screening number—for example, 1,000 estimated cubic feet would imply 7,000 pounds under that shortcut—but it is not a guaranteed weight, a legal limit or a shipment ticket. Actual weight varies with density and packing. Use the vehicle’s stated payload and obtain a certified weighing process when a limit matters.

How calculators relate to moving quotes and route guides

Cubic feet helps a carrier estimate space, labor and vehicle class, but it does not determine a final interstate price by itself. Distance, origin and destination, dates, stairs, elevators, access for the truck, packing services, valuation coverage, fuel and shipment weight can all affect a quote. County cost ranges and route guides may use different assumptions from an online calculator.

Give a mover the itemized inventory behind your cubic-foot total and identify anything unusually heavy, fragile or oversized. Ask whether the quote is based on measured volume, a catalog allowance, shipment weight or a binding survey. Keep additions and removals updated; a calculator result based on an outdated list can mislead even when its arithmetic is correct.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using bedroom count as the final answer: replace the label with an item list that includes storage and outdoor areas.
  • Forgetting boxes and bins: count packed cartons as soon as you know their sizes, and revise the total when carton sizes change.
  • Mixing inches and feet: convert every dimension before multiplying; divide inch-based products by 1,728.
  • Ignoring an oversized piece: measure its maximum transport dimensions and verify door, ramp and interior clearances.
  • Treating a catalog subtotal as measured space: label allowances clearly and obtain a survey when the margin for error is small.
  • Checking only the truck’s exterior length: use interior dimensions, cargo volume and payload from the exact rental listing.
  • Assuming specifications never change: recheck the provider page and vehicle configuration at booking and pickup.
  • Confusing volume with weight: use any pounds-per-cubic-foot multiplier only as a planning shortcut, never as a certified weight.

A final decision framework

Choose the vehicle only after you have a defensible inventory total and have checked the largest pieces and heaviest categories. If the total is comfortably below the published volume but a bulky item barely clears a dimension, solve the dimension problem first. If dimensions work but dense goods approach payload, solve the weight problem with a different vehicle, split shipment or professional assessment. If both are uncertain, a mover’s survey is safer than relying on a room-count rule.
