Moving averages and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) describe different parts of recent price behavior: a moving average smooths past prices to show trend context, while RSI measures the balance of recent gains and losses. Neither predicts a market’s next move on its own. Used together, they can help you read a chart more clearly—but they do not make a trading rule reliable or crypto investing safe.
What a moving average tells you
A moving average (MA) calculates an average price over a chosen number of chart bars. By smoothing short-term fluctuations, it can make the broader direction easier to inspect. The trade-off is that it reacts to prices that have already occurred: it is a lagging indicator, useful for interpretation and confirmation rather than prediction. TradingView’s moving-average documentation describes that role.
SMA, EMA, and WMA
- Simple moving average (SMA): averages the prices in the selected period.
- Exponential moving average (EMA): gives recent observations more influence, so it responds more quickly to recent price changes than an SMA with the same period.
- Weighted moving average (WMA): assigns weights to observations rather than treating every price equally.
For an EMA, TradingView gives the formula as EMA = (current close − previous EMA) × multiplier + previous EMA, with multiplier = 2/(period + 1). The period determines how many observations inform the calculation; the multiplier controls how much weight the current close receives.
What RSI measures
The Relative Strength Index is a momentum oscillator on a 0–100 scale. It compares average gains with average losses across a selected number of bars. TradingView gives its calculation as RSI = 100 − 100/(1 + RS), where RS = average gain / average loss, using Wilder-style smoothed averages in its example. J. Welles Wilder Jr. introduced RSI in his 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems, according to TradingView’s RSI documentation.

Read the period in the context of the chart
Fourteen bars is the popular or default RSI length in TradingView’s documentation, but a bar is determined by the chart timeframe. A 14-bar RSI on a daily chart uses daily bars; on an hourly chart, it uses hourly bars. Other lengths are also used, so a reading is meaningful only alongside its timeframe and chosen settings.
Overbought and oversold are interpretations
RSI readings near the high end indicate stronger recent upward momentum; readings near the low end indicate stronger recent downward momentum. Traders often call such conditions “overbought” or “oversold,” but those labels do not mean a reversal is due. A strong move can persist, and one RSI value does not establish which direction price will take next. TradingView cautions against relying on a single RSI number or using the indicator as the sole basis for a trading decision.

How moving averages and RSI differ
| Comparison | Moving average | RSI |
|---|---|---|
| What it uses | Past prices over a selected lookback | Average gains and losses derived from price changes over a selected lookback |
| What it displays | An average on the price scale | An oscillator from 0 to 100 |
| What it helps describe | Smoothed direction and trend context | Recent momentum |
| Main caution | It lags because it summarizes past prices | Threshold readings can be over-interpreted as reversal promises |
How to use both on a chart
Think of the indicators as complementary descriptions, not as a mechanical entry recipe. The moving average gives context about smoothed direction over its lookback; RSI describes the balance of gains and losses over its own lookback. Their periods need not match, and changing either period changes what recent behavior each indicator summarizes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- If both appear to support the same reading, that is agreement between two descriptions of recent price behavior—not proof of a future move.
- If they disagree, the difference may reflect distinct lookback windows or the contrast between smoothed direction and recent momentum. Disagreement is information to examine, not an automatic buy or sell signal.
- A crossover, an RSI threshold, or a divergence is a chart condition to interpret in context. The documentation cited here does not establish that a combined rule based on these conditions is profitable.
For a useful chart read, note the timeframe and indicator periods, then consider the surrounding price action and your broader analysis. Do not treat an indicator as a substitute for a decision process or risk controls.

What these indicators cannot establish about crypto risk
Chart interpretation and investment safety are separate questions. In a September 9, 2024 investor bulletin about bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products (ETPs), the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy described bitcoin and ether as highly speculative and urged investors to carefully consider risks and benefits when considering an ETP. That warning is specific to those products and assets; it does not show that an MA or RSI predicts crypto returns, nor does it establish the same product details for every crypto asset or platform. Read the SEC investor bulletin.
