Taking your Wi-Fi router when you move can preserve the home network you know and give you more control over its settings. It does not guarantee lower bills, faster internet, or better coverage: first confirm that the router works with the service and connection at your new address.
What owning a router changes when you move
A router creates and manages your home network, connecting devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Bringing your own can make it easier to keep familiar network settings and avoid starting over with a different router. That continuity is useful, but the router still needs a compatible internet connection and may need to be configured for the new provider.
Ownership can also let you choose how your network is configured and updated. Whether it saves money depends on the provider’s equipment fees, support terms, and any equipment you need to buy; there is no universal cost advantage. Nor does ownership by itself improve internet speed or Wi-Fi coverage.
Check the new apartment before packing your equipment
Start by confirming that an internet provider serves the exact address, then ask what type of connection is installed. Apartments may have coaxial cable, Ethernet, telephone wiring, a fiber terminal, or provider equipment already in place. The connection determines which equipment you can use and where it can connect. T-Mobile’s apartment setup guidance recommends checking the available connection points and equipment; Verizon’s moving guidance is another place to check service and setup arrangements.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Ask the new provider whether it allows your own router, whether a separate modem is required, and whether provider equipment is required for activation or support. Rules differ. Xfinity allows customer-owned equipment subject to its compatibility check. Frontier says its router or modem is required for initial activation, so check its current router guidance before planning to activate with only your own device.
Know whether you need a modem, a router, or both
A modem connects an internet service’s incoming line to Ethernet. A router shares that connection with devices on a local network and provides Wi-Fi. A gateway combines modem and router functions in one device. Some apartment setups provide a connection that does not require a separate modem, so do not buy one until the provider identifies what the address needs. Google explains the distinction in its modem and router help page.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Router only: May be sufficient when the apartment has an Ethernet handoff or the provider supplies the modem or fiber terminal.
- Modem plus router: May be needed for cable service if the provider permits a customer-owned modem and does not provide a gateway.
- Gateway: May be required or supplied by the provider; check whether you can use your own router with it and whether bridge mode or another configuration is supported.
For cable service, verify the modem model against the provider’s current approved list before reusing or purchasing it. A router’s compatibility does not establish modem compatibility.

Compare your router with the plan and apartment
Check the router’s supported connection type and capabilities against the subscribed plan, then consider how many devices will be online and how much of the apartment needs coverage. The FCC notes that multiple connected devices can affect performance and describes a general trade-off: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi tends to reach farther, while 5 GHz can carry data more quickly. These are broad tendencies, not a promise of particular speed or coverage in a specific apartment; walls, placement, interference, and the plan also matter. See the FCC’s home network guide.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
If you keep provider equipment instead, compare its rental and support terms with the cost and support implications of using your own device. Also check who handles firmware and security updates. The right choice depends on the actual terms and equipment at your address, not on a general assumption that personal gear is always cheaper or better.

Set up and secure the network after the move
- Connect the required equipment. Follow the provider’s instructions for the apartment’s connection type and activate service. If activation fails, verify that the modem or gateway is supported and that any required provider device is connected.
- Configure the router. Use the manufacturer’s setup process to connect it to the modem or Ethernet handoff, then set a distinct Wi-Fi network name and a strong password.
- Secure administration. Change the router’s default administrator credentials and use WPA3 or WPA2 encryption where available. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance also recommends keeping router software updated and checking the firewall.
- Review optional features. Consider a guest network for visitors. Turn off remote management, WPS, or UPnP if you do not need those features, as the FTC advises.
A moving-day checklist
- Confirm service availability at the new address and identify the installed connection type.
- Ask whether your own router is allowed, whether you need a separate modem, and whether provider equipment is required for activation or support.
- For cable internet, check the provider’s current approved-modem list.
- Check that the router suits the plan and the household’s device and coverage needs.
- After setup, change default administrator credentials, set unique Wi-Fi credentials, use WPA3 or WPA2 where available, and confirm that software updates are enabled or available.
