On Windows 11 PCs that have received the feature, you can place the taskbar at the bottom, top, left, or right of the screen. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors > Taskbar position and choose an edge. Microsoft says the feature is rolling out gradually, so the option may not appear on every PC yet.
Change the taskbar position in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Select Taskbar position, then choose Bottom, Top, Left, or Right.
Microsoft announced this setting in its August 27, 2026 Windows 11 KB5120998 preview update notice, which lists OS Builds 26200.9278 and 26100.9278. Microsoft describes availability as a gradual rollout; the notice does not establish a universal date or a complete list of device and build requirements.
What to do if Taskbar position is missing
If you do not see Taskbar position under Taskbar behaviors, the gradual rollout may not have reached your PC. Microsoft’s notice does not specify a guaranteed eligibility date or a complete set of requirements, so the absence of the control alone does not identify a specific problem.
Taskbar position is different from alignment
Taskbar position changes the screen edge where the taskbar appears. Taskbar alignment controls whether taskbar icons sit centered or toward the left; it does not move the bar to another edge. Microsoft’s general taskbar instructions describe alignment separately from position.

Which taskbar features work at each position?
In the KB5120998 notice, Microsoft says most customization settings, including never combining taskbar icons, work at all positions. It also says the Search box and the smaller taskbar option are supported only when the taskbar is at the top or bottom. This support detail reflects the cited notice and may change in later updates.
Why Microsoft support pages may disagree
Microsoft’s general taskbar article says the taskbar stays at the bottom and that there are no settings to move it to the top or side. That statement conflicts with the newer, dated KB5120998 notice announcing the four-position setting. For PCs that have received the rollout, use the newer setting path; availability remains gradual.
