To move Samsung text-message history to an iPhone, use Apple’s Move to iOS during the iPhone’s initial setup. Choose From Android, select message history or SMS when prompted, and keep both phones powered and undisturbed until the iPhone finishes. If your iPhone is already set up, Apple’s documented route requires erasing it and starting setup again.

Transfer Samsung messages during iPhone setup

  1. Prepare both phones. Charge them, make sure the content you want to move will fit in the iPhone’s available storage, and keep them close together. Leave the Samsung phone available for the transfer.
  2. Start iPhone setup. On the iPhone, follow the setup prompts until you reach the transfer screen, then choose From Android.
  3. Open Move to iOS on the Samsung. Follow its prompts and enter the code shown on the iPhone to connect the devices.
  4. Select message history. Choose the message-history or SMS option from the content list. Apple also lists other transferable categories, including contacts, photos and videos, files, calendars, and call history; the available content depends on the transfer flow.
  5. Wait for completion. Keep both phones powered and leave Move to iOS in the foreground on the Samsung until the iPhone’s progress bar finishes. Apple warns that leaving the app, answering a call, or otherwise interrupting the Android phone before completion can prevent content from transferring.
  6. Check the result. Open Messages on the iPhone and inspect conversations that matter to you before erasing, trading in, or deleting data from the Samsung.

Apple lists message history and SMS as transferable, but does not promise that every message subtype, attachment, or configuration will transfer in every case. Treat the inspection step as essential if you need to preserve particular conversations.

What if the iPhone is already set up?

Apple’s guidance is explicit: “If you already finished setup, you need to erase your iOS device and start over.” The Move to iOS transfer takes place in the iPhone’s setup flow, so using that documented method on an already-configured iPhone means erasing it and beginning setup again. Back up anything you want to keep and consider the consequences before doing so.

If you do not want to erase the iPhone, Apple’s manual-transfer instructions cover categories such as mail, contacts, calendars, photos, videos, music, books and PDFs, documents, and apps. They do not describe a manual procedure for importing Samsung SMS or message history into Apple Messages. Copying files or signing into an account should not be treated as a way to import the Samsung conversation database.

Choose wireless or a direct cable connection

Apple supports wireless transfer or a direct USB-C connection. Google’s Android-to-iPhone transfer instructions describe USB-C as more reliable than Wi-Fi. A cable is only an option if the ports on your particular phones and the available cable are compatible; check both devices rather than assuming a specific cable will fit.

Method When it makes sense What to keep in mind
Direct cable Both phones support a compatible connection and you want Google’s described more reliable option. Compatibility depends on the specific phones and cable. A cable does not guarantee a successful transfer.
Wireless You prefer not to connect the phones directly and can maintain a stable Wi-Fi connection. Keep Wi-Fi enabled, leave the Samsung undisturbed, and keep both devices powered until completion.

Either method uses the same key requirement: the iPhone must be in the setup migration flow for Apple’s documented message-history transfer.

Understand Samsung Messages, Google Messages, and RCS

Samsung Messages is a separate Android-side issue

Samsung’s US support notice says Samsung Messages is discontinued and identifies July 2026 as the end of support for Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later. Samsung directs affected users to Google Messages and says conversations automatically transfer when switching between those apps. That change is between messaging apps on the Samsung phone; it is not the Android-to-iPhone transfer. Use Move to iOS to migrate message history to an iPhone.

RCS affects messaging after the move, not historical import

Apple says RCS on iPhone requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan from a carrier that supports RCS. This concerns sending and receiving messages after the switch; RCS is not a method for importing old Samsung conversations. Likewise, Apple’s Messages in iCloud can sync message history—including SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage—among Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account, but it is not documented as an Android import method.

When to move your SIM and retire the Samsung

Complete the message transfer and verify important conversations before you wipe, trade in, or otherwise give up the Samsung phone. Do not rely on later access to the original device as your only way to recover messages. If you encounter a problem, keep the Samsung unchanged and available while you decide whether to retry the setup transfer; Apple’s cited instructions do not establish a universal compatibility guarantee for every Samsung model, iPhone model, operating-system build, carrier, message type, or attachment.
