To continue a single open conversation in another AI assistant, the featured option is ThreadPort, a Chrome extension that transfers a conversation transcript between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. That is different from moving a memory profile or importing a large archive: Gemini documents ZIP-based chat-history import, while Claude offers a separate, experimental memory-import flow.

Choose the transfer method for what you want to keep

Your goal Relevant option Key distinction
Continue one active conversation in another assistant ThreadPort transcript handoff Moves an open thread’s transcript into a different service; it is a browser extension.
Import a larger chat archive into Gemini Gemini’s ZIP import Imports history from another platform, subject to file, account and regional limits.
Carry preferences or remembered context into Claude Claude memory import Imports a context description, not a complete chat archive.
Move chats between personal ChatGPT accounts OpenAI’s export-and-upload workaround Makes the export available as context in a new conversation; it does not recreate separate chats.

These options solve different problems. A transcript handoff is useful when you want another assistant to pick up a particular discussion. Memory import is for preferences and context. Archive import is for bringing a broader set of past conversations into a service that supports it.

How ThreadPort hands off an active conversation

ThreadPort is the method featured in the referenced article. Its Chrome Web Store listing, updated September 8, 2026, describes full-transcript transfers among ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Mistral, along with Markdown export. The product listing describes the transfer capability; Tom’s Guide and TechRadar have separately reported on hands-on use and operation. This is not an independent test of the extension.

In practical terms, the extension reads the conversation on the source service and opens the destination with the transcript as context, so you can continue the discussion there. It is aimed at moving a thread, not merging accounts or transferring every saved preference and conversation in one operation.

The Chrome Web Store listing states that ThreadPort allows 10 free transfers per month and offers a Pro option for unlimited transfers. These are the listing’s current terms, which may change. Its privacy section says the developer disclosed that it does not collect or use user data; that disclosure is not a security audit. TechRadar reports that browser storage is used for settings, temporary transfers and a monthly usage count, and that the extension supports Chrome and Edge. A report about operation is not a source-code audit.

Review access before transferring sensitive material

A browser extension that works with AI chat pages may have access to sensitive conversation content. Before installing or using it, review its current permissions and privacy disclosures, and avoid transferring material you would not want accessible to an extension. Treat product privacy statements as disclosures to evaluate, not proof of security.

Import a full chat archive into Gemini

Google documents an import route for chat history from other AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Claude. The workflow is to export the source data, then upload the ZIP through Gemini’s Import memory settings. Google says processing can take up to a day. The feature requires a personal Google Account and an age of 18 or older, and is not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. It is also unavailable in Gemini in Google Messages, Gemini in Chrome and Gemini on Android XR. See Google’s Gemini Apps Help instructions.

  • Google sets a 5 GB maximum ZIP file size and a limit of five ZIP uploads per day.
  • Imported conversations appear in Chats with an imported-chat icon. You can search and delete individual imported chats, or delete an entire ZIP batch from Settings.
  • Chat text transfers, but generated images and files from the previous app do not transfer as files. Project files and attachments are not imported as project files; upload any needed files separately.

Those content limits matter if your goal is to preserve working materials, not just conversation text. Google’s Gemini import FAQ explains what is and is not included.

Bring a memory profile into Claude

Claude has a memory-import flow distinct from chat-history migration. Anthropic’s September 2, 2026 help page describes importing a memory or context description generated from another AI provider: copy the description and paste it into Claude’s import flow on the web or Claude Desktop. Anthropic says the experience is available on Free, Pro, Max and Team, though some Team and Enterprise users remain on a legacy experience. The feature is experimental, and Claude may not always incorporate imported memories. See Anthropic’s memory import and export instructions.

This is the better fit for carrying useful preferences and background into Claude without treating every old exchange as a conversation to continue. It should not be mistaken for a full archive import.

What Claude and ChatGPT support for chat exports

Claude: export is not import into another personal account

Individual Free, Pro and Max users can export Claude account data and chat history from the web or Claude Desktop. Anthropic says that export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. For Team and Enterprise, only the organization’s Primary Owner can access exports. The download link expires 24 hours after delivery. Details are in Anthropic’s Claude data export help.

ChatGPT: an account-to-account context workaround

OpenAI documents a manual way to move conversations between personal ChatGPT accounts: export the data, then upload conversations.json into a new conversation in the receiving account. OpenAI says this does not merge the accounts or restore the old conversations as separate chats; the uploaded material serves as historical context in that new conversation. The documented process is not available for ChatGPT Business accounts. It is a within-ChatGPT account workaround, not a documented full-history import into Claude. See OpenAI’s conversation-transfer instructions.

Which route fits your situation?

  • One discussion is in progress: use a transcript handoff such as ThreadPort if you are comfortable granting an extension access to the relevant chat page.
  • You want a searchable history in Gemini: use Google’s ZIP import if your account, region and files meet its requirements, and account for the exclusion of generated files and project attachments.
  • You want Claude to know your preferences: use its memory import and treat the result as experimental rather than a guaranteed, complete transfer.
  • You need a Claude history export: export it for your records, but do not expect to import that export into another personal Claude account.
  • You are changing ChatGPT accounts: OpenAI’s upload route makes history available in a new conversation, not as separate restored threads.
