You can move a GitHub repository to Forgejo and keep its workflow file in the familiar .github/workflows directory. That does not guarantee the workflow will run unchanged: Forgejo Actions uses runners, and Forgejo says GitHub Actions compatibility is not its goal. Treat the move as a repository migration plus a CI validation, not as a drop-in replacement.
This distinction matters for the claim that a move left one person’s workflow “exactly the same.” The platform documentation establishes what Forgejo supports, but not what happened to a particular author’s projects. Without that author’s migration notes or repository changes, the personal outcome cannot be independently confirmed.
What can stay the same—and what may not
Forgejo can discover workflow YAML files in .github/workflows when .forgejo/workflows is absent, so relocating the files is not necessarily part of the move. That is a familiar path, not a promise of identical execution. Forgejo’s Actions user guide says: “Forgejo Actions is designed to be familiar to users of GitHub Actions, but it is not designed to be compatible.” It adds that a migrated workflow will most likely need some minimal tweaking.

Forgejo does not execute jobs itself. A suitable runner must be available to the repository, either through the instance or separate configuration.

What to check in each workflow
Before relying on a migrated workflow, review the dependencies around its YAML, not just whether Forgejo detects the file. Differences vary with runner setup and Forgejo version; consult the official Actions guide and Actions reference for the version you run.
- Runner environment: Many Forgejo runners use a smaller Debian Bookworm environment than GitHub’s larger Ubuntu image. Check required system packages, tools, and assumptions about the shell or preinstalled software.
- Contexts and job features: Some
githubcontext keys are missing, and some job subkeys—includingpermissionsandcontinue-on-error—are ignored. Confirm that expressions and job behavior match what your workflow expects. - OIDC and credentials: OIDC setup differs; Forgejo’s migration guide describes use of its
enable-openid-connectworkflow key. Recreate and validate secrets and variables rather than assuming credentials came across with the repository. - Actions and integrations: Inspect external action references and any dependencies on GitHub APIs, webhooks, deploy keys, status checks, or bots. Reconfigure the services that need to interact with the new forge.
Move a repository and verify the import
Forgejo’s migration flow can import more than Git history: the documented options include branches, tags, issues, pull requests and discussion history, labels, milestones, releases, and LFS objects when enabled and authorized. Import choices and permissions matter, so inspect the destination rather than assuming every item transferred.

- Start a repository migration. In Forgejo, create a migration and select GitHub as the source. A private source may require a GitHub personal access token with only the read access needed for the import. The import runs server-side and may take time for a large repository.
- Check the destination copy. Clone the Forgejo repository into a clean directory. Verify branches, tags, issues, pull requests, releases, and LFS files as applicable.
- Update your local setup. Change the remote used by your local clone and check scripts, editors, deployment jobs, or other tools that still call GitHub APIs.
- Validate CI separately. Configure an appropriate runner, then run workflows and inspect logs. Test any modified workflow and its integrations before treating the Forgejo copy as the working source.
- Retire the old source only after checks pass. Archive or lock the GitHub repository after verifying the destination and deciding how to handle any remaining writes. The migration guide notes that secrets and webhooks do not migrate automatically.
Choose an import or a transition period for multiple repositories
For several repositories, Forgejo’s web migration flow is repository-by-repository. The migration guide recommends scripting batch moves; its command examples use Fjord’s fj CLI, which is a provider-specific tool, not a bundled Forgejo feature.
A one-time import is suitable when the source can stop receiving writes. If you need a transition window, a pull mirror can keep the destination updated while you prepare; perform a final sync and cut over deliberately. In either case, retain access to the original until you have checked the copied repositories and related services.

Stage the CI cutover instead of assuming parity
A lower-risk approach is to migrate repositories first while keeping the existing CI arrangement temporarily. Then port and run workflows individually, resolve runner or integration differences, and switch jobs only when the new setup is validated. This is a practical migration procedure, not a guarantee that every project will need the same sequence.
The key decision is whether you want to change only where Git repositories live or also who operates the forge and CI. Self-hosting puts upgrades, backups, availability, security settings, and runner maintenance on you. Managed Forgejo hosting may take on some of those responsibilities, but the exact services depend on the provider. Either way, check runner environments and the integrations your projects rely on before moving the last active workflow.

When a Forgejo move is a good fit
Forgejo is a plausible destination if you want a different Git hosting setup and are willing to validate CI and integrations as part of the change. The repository migration can carry substantial project history, and familiar workflow paths can reduce file reshuffling. But if your main requirement is that every job, credential, API call, and bot behave exactly as before without review, the available documentation does not support that guarantee. Base the cutover on tests of your own projects.
