To move your data to a new iPhone while reducing the risk of losing anything, first make a current backup of your old phone, then use Quick Start, restore from iCloud or a computer, or use a compatible cable. Keep the old iPhone until you have checked your important photos, messages, health records, and apps on the new one. A usable home screen does not necessarily mean every cloud item has finished downloading.
Before transferring, protect the data on your old iPhone
Make a fresh iCloud backup before you begin. On the old iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup, tap Back Up Now, and keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes. Check the date and time shown under Back Up Now to confirm it is recent. If iCloud reports that there is not enough storage, resolve the prompt rather than assuming the backup succeeded. Apple says automatic iCloud backups run when the device is connected to power and Wi-Fi and is locked. Apple’s iCloud backup instructions explain the process.
If you recently bought a new iPhone or iPad, Apple says you may be eligible for temporary iCloud storage for the transfer; eligibility is conditional. Have your Apple Account password ready, and prepare your SIM or eSIM arrangement. If the new phone needs a different SIM, Apple advises contacting your carrier.

Use Quick Start to transfer directly or download from iCloud
Quick Start is usually the simplest route when both iPhones are with you. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPhone, unlock it, and place it near the new iPhone. Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the new device, then choose a direct transfer or an iCloud download when offered. Apple’s Quick Start instructions describe both choices.

Direct transfer
Choose the direct-transfer option if you want the data copied from the old iPhone to the new one. Keep the phones near each other and connected to power until the transfer is complete. You cannot use the old phone normally during the process, and the new one is not ready until migration finishes. Apple notes that transfer times vary with network conditions and the amount of data.
Download from iCloud
Choose the iCloud download option if you prefer to start using the new iPhone sooner. Apps and data can download in the background after setup. Keep the new phone connected to Wi-Fi and power while that continues. Quick Start may ask you to activate mobile service; whether an eSIM can move directly depends on your carrier.

Quick Start cannot transfer from the current device if the new iPhone is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. In that case, follow the setup or migration process provided by the organization.
Restore from an iCloud backup
If a suitable iCloud backup is available, you do not need the old iPhone nearby to restore it. During setup of the new iPhone, choose Restore from iCloud Backup, sign in with your Apple Account, and select the backup you want. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power as apps and other content restore. Apple’s iCloud restore instructions cover setup and continued downloads.

If the new iPhone has already been set up, Apple’s documented backup-restore flow requires erasing it first. Erasing deletes the new phone’s current contents, so make sure anything on it that you want to keep is saved elsewhere before proceeding. Do not erase the old iPhone to start this process.
Restore a backup from a Mac or PC
Use this route if you have a backup made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Connect the new iPhone to the computer, open the relevant app, select the device, and choose the restore option. Pick the backup by its date and size so you restore the intended snapshot. If the backup is encrypted, enter its password when prompted. For future backups, enable encryption if you need Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch to transfer. An unencrypted computer backup omits that data. Keep the encryption password somewhere you can retrieve it: the restore process requires it, and a forgotten password can prevent you from using that backup. If the new iPhone is already configured, restoring through the documented setup flow requires erasing it first.

Apple documents wired migration for these model pairings. Check the exact source and target models before choosing a cable or adapter; these accessories are not needed for Quick Start or backup restores.

Connect the devices using the matching setup, then follow the onscreen steps on both phones. Apple’s wired migration instructions list these pairings. The cited instructions do not establish a universal completion time; duration depends on the amount of data and conditions.
After setup, verify the data before retiring the old phone
Some cloud content can arrive after the new iPhone is usable. Leave it on Wi-Fi and power and allow photos, music, apps, and other iCloud content to finish downloading or syncing. Before wiping, trading in, or otherwise giving up the old phone, check the items that matter to you:
- Open Photos and confirm that important images and videos are present.
- Check Messages, contacts, calendars, and files you rely on.
- Open critical apps and verify their account access and locally stored information.
- Check Health and Activity data if those records are important to you.
- Confirm that calls and mobile data work, and that the intended SIM or eSIM is active.
Apple’s transfer options do not guarantee that every app’s local or account-specific data will migrate automatically. An app may require signing in again or using its own transfer or recovery process. Keep the old phone until you have checked important records and can access them on the new one.
