If you already know Express, you can keep its request-and-response mental model while moving to NestJS: Nest uses Express as its default HTTP platform, but adds a structured application layer built around controllers, injectable providers, and modules. To use Prisma, generate Prisma Client, wrap it in a provider, and export that provider from a module so feature modules can inject it.
What changes when you move from Express to NestJS?
NestJS is a Node.js server-side framework. Express is its default HTTP platform; Fastify is an alternative. Nest exposes underlying platform APIs, so familiar request and response objects remain useful, but Nest—not an Express router you assemble by hand—builds the application’s routes from controller metadata. See the NestJS framework overview.
The main change is how application pieces are organized and connected:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Concern | Express approach | NestJS approach |
|---|---|---|
| Routing | Register handlers on an app or router. | Declare route methods on controller classes with decorators. |
| Application logic | Call functions or modules from handlers. | Inject providers, commonly services, and delegate work to them. |
| Composition | Arrange imports and calls in application code. | Declare controllers, providers, imports, and exports in modules. |
| Database access | Use a database client in a handler or service. | Inject a Prisma service that wraps the generated client. |
A controller is not simply an Express router with decorators. It is part of Nest’s application graph, and it must be registered in a module for Nest to discover its routes.

How do you convert an Express route into a Nest controller?
An Express route might look like this:
app.get('/users/:id', async (req, res) => {
const user = await findUser(req.params.id);
res.json(user);
});
In Nest, a controller class groups routes under a prefix, while decorators map a method to an HTTP method and path. The method can still receive request data through parameters, but application and database work should generally live in an injected provider.
import { Controller, Get, Param } from '@nestjs/common';
import { UsersService } from './users.service';
@Controller('users')
export class UsersController {
constructor(private readonly usersService: UsersService) {}
@Get(':id')
findOne(@Param('id') id: string) {
return this.usersService.findOne(id);
}
}
Here, @Controller('users') supplies a route prefix, and @Get(':id') maps the method to a GET route. Nest reads this decorator metadata when it constructs the route map. The framework’s controller documentation covers route parameters and other request-handling decorators.
Where should application logic go?
Keep the controller responsible for HTTP concerns—receiving input and returning a result—and delegate domain or data-access work to a provider. A provider is a class or other dependency that Nest can inject; services, repositories, factories, and helpers can all be providers.

For example, a users service can own the operation while the controller stays focused on its route:
import { Injectable } from '@nestjs/common';
import { PrismaService } from '../prisma/prisma.service';
@Injectable()
export class UsersService {
constructor(private readonly prisma: PrismaService) {}
findOne(id: string) {
return this.prisma.user.findUnique({ where: { id } });
}
}
Nest can resolve UsersService only when it is registered as a provider in a module. The provider documentation explains dependency injection and provider types.
How do modules connect controllers and providers?
A module is a class annotated with @Module(). Its metadata declares its controllers, providers, imported modules, and exported providers. Provider visibility is module-scoped by default: another module gets access to a provider by importing the module that exports it.

A feature module might register the controller and service like this:
import { Module } from '@nestjs/common';
import { PrismaModule } from '../prisma/prisma.module';
import { UsersController } from './users.controller';
import { UsersService } from './users.service';
@Module({
imports: [PrismaModule],
controllers: [UsersController],
providers: [UsersService],
})
export class UsersModule {}
This makes the exported Prisma provider available for injection into UsersService. Registering a provider in one module does not automatically make it available to every other module. Nest’s module documentation describes imports, exports, and module scope.
How does Express middleware fit into Nest?
Nest middleware runs before a route handler and serves the familiar purpose of inspecting or changing a request or response, ending the request, or calling next() to continue. It can be a function or an injectable class. For example, function middleware can retain the familiar Express flow:

function requestLogger(req, res, next) {
console.log(req.method, req.url);
next();
}
Class middleware is configured through a module’s configure() method; global middleware can be attached with app.use(). Choose module-bound class middleware when it needs Nest dependency injection: middleware attached through global app.use() cannot access the Nest dependency-injection container. Also check the active HTTP adapter before carrying middleware over unchanged; Express and Fastify can differ in behavior and method signatures. See the NestJS middleware documentation.
How do you expose Prisma Client as a Nest provider?
Nest is database-agnostic, and Prisma has no Nest-specific package. The integration pattern is to generate Prisma Client, wrap it in a service, register that service in a dedicated Prisma module, and export it. Feature modules then import the Prisma module rather than constructing their own client.
A simplified service and module show the boundary:
import { Injectable } from '@nestjs/common';
import { PrismaClient } from '@prisma/client';
@Injectable()
export class PrismaService extends PrismaClient {}
import { Module } from '@nestjs/common';
import { PrismaService } from './prisma.service';
@Module({
providers: [PrismaService],
exports: [PrismaService],
})
export class PrismaModule {}
This illustrates the provider and module relationship; use the client import, construction options, environment configuration, and lifecycle hooks required by your installed Prisma version. The NestJS Prisma recipe describes the integration, and Prisma documents its Nest setup in its NestJS guide.

Which Prisma version’s setup instructions should you follow?
Prisma setup is major-version-sensitive. Prisma’s documentation index currently identifies ORM 8 as the current release and ORM 7 as supported. The Nest integration guide linked above documents Prisma ORM 7 and notes that it requires a database driver adapter or an Accelerate URL to instantiate Prisma Client. Do not assume an older setup example applies unchanged to a newer or different installed major.
- Check the Prisma ORM major version installed in your project.
- Use the matching Prisma documentation for client generation, imports, configuration, and database connection requirements.
- Keep the Nest boundary the same—provide the generated client through a Nest provider—but adapt its construction to that version’s requirements.
Prisma lists both Express and NestJS as supported REST API frameworks, so adopting Nest does not require replacing Prisma. See Prisma’s documentation index for its current release information and its REST API guidance.
