An IPS tag is a registrar identifier used in Nominet’s .uk domain system. It identifies the registrar managing a domain; it is not an IP address or a DNS setting. If you are moving a .uk domain, confirm the receiving registrar’s current process before asking your existing provider to make a change: current Nominet materials also address transfer authorization codes, so older tag-only instructions may not cover every transfer.
What is an IPS tag?
An IPS tag—also called a registrar tag or Nominet tag—is an identifier associated with the registrar that manages a .uk domain. Nominet’s current registrar documentation generally calls it a “tag.” The identifier is used within the registry’s registrar-management system; it is not a public-facing setting for your website.
Some provider documentation expands IPS as “Internet Provider Security.” In practical terms, the important point is what the tag does: it identifies the registrar responsible for managing the domain registration.

What an IPS tag is not
- Not an IP address: An IP address is a network address. The letters “IP” in IPS tag do not make the tag an address for your server.
- Not a DNS record or nameserver: DNS settings control how a domain resolves or directs services. A registrar change and DNS changes are separate operations; changing a tag does not, by itself, change website hosting or nameserver records.
- Not a change of domain holder: The registrant is the person or organization recorded as the domain holder. Changing the registrar is a different action from changing the registrant.
How a .uk registrar transfer may work
Older registrar guidance describes a familiar tag-change workflow: the existing provider changes the domain’s current tag to the destination registrar’s tag. Some receiving registrars may also require an approval or authorization step.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not treat that older description as a universal, current procedure. Nominet’s registrar systems information describes tag-based registrar management and EPP operations, including push transfers and release operations. Its .UK Policies page, with policy version 2026-03, includes transfer authorization-code requirements. The required steps depend on the current rules and the registrars involved.
What to do before moving your domain
- Identify the destination registrar. Confirm that it accepts the kind of .uk domain you have and review its current transfer instructions.
- Ask the current provider what action it must take. Find out whether it must change the tag, release the domain, provide or process an authorization code, or complete another step.
- Confirm the exact destination tag if required. Use the value and instructions supplied by the receiving registrar. Do not rely on an old tag copied from a previous guide.
- Complete any receiving-side approval. Follow the destination registrar’s instructions for an authorization or acceptance step, if one applies.
- Check the outcome in both accounts. Confirm with the providers that the registrar change completed. If your site or email must continue working, separately verify the domain’s DNS and nameserver settings.
This is a practical checklist, not a guaranteed fixed sequence: registry procedures and provider controls can change, and the sources do not establish one universal order or transfer time. Nominet’s current policy materials and the instructions from both registrars should take precedence over older explanations.

IPS tags and authorization codes are different
An IPS tag identifies a registrar in the .uk registrar system. An authorization code is a separate credential or approval mechanism used in domain-transfer processes. A tag-change explanation does not prove that a transfer never needs a code: Nominet’s current policy materials address authorization-code requirements. Check whether a code or another approval step applies to your specific move.

Why older instructions can be misleading
Many explanations describe the tag-change method as though every .uk transfer follows the same steps. That can leave out current policy requirements, EPP release or push operations, and provider-specific approval steps. Treat a guide as a description of a possible workflow, not as a substitute for the current instructions from Nominet and the two registrars involved.
