For most people, Sonos Move 2 is the best Sonos speaker for outside. It combines an IP56 water-and-dust-resistance rating with up to 24 hours of battery life, so it suits patios, decks, gatherings, and moving between rooms. Choose Sonos Roam 2 when you want a smaller speaker and a higher published water-protection rating (IP67), accepting its shorter, up-to-10-hour battery life. If you want speakers that remain mounted outside, skip the portable models and use Sonos Outdoor by Sonance speakers with a Sonos Amp. The portable models are weather-resistant for listening outdoors, not year-round outdoor fixtures; Sonos recommends storing both indoors when they are not in use.
Quick answer: which Sonos outdoor speaker should you buy?
| Option | Best for | Published outdoor specification | What you must plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonos Move 2 | One versatile portable speaker for a patio, deck, gathering, or indoor/outdoor use | IP56 water and dust resistance; up to 24 hours of battery life | It is not waterproof, should not be submerged or exposed to pressurized water, and should be stored indoors. Its charging base is for indoor use. |
| Sonos Roam 2 | Compact carry-around listening and smaller outdoor spaces | IP67 protection; up to 10 hours of continuous playback | Sonos still recommends indoor storage when it is not being used. Its cable and wireless-charging accessories are for indoor use. |
| Sonos Outdoor by Sonance plus Sonos Amp | Permanent, mounted sound in a patio or yard | Outdoor speaker materials describe weather resistance; the 2024 surface-mount sell sheet lists IP66 and Mil Spec 810 | These are passive speakers. They need an amplifier such as Sonos Amp, speaker wire, mounting, and a fixed installation. |
These are manufacturer specifications and guidance, not an independent listening test or a guarantee for every climate. The best choice depends less on a “best sound” ranking than on whether you need portability, how much exposure the speaker will receive, and whether you are prepared to install wired speakers and an amplifier.
Move 2: the best all-around portable choice
Move 2 is the practical default for a household that wants one Sonos speaker to travel from room to room and then outside. Sonos describes it as a premium portable speaker for bringing stereo sound from room to room and outdoors. The useful outdoor figures are an IP56 rating and up to 24 hours of battery life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy Move 2 fits most patios and gatherings
- Longer stated runtime: up to 24 hours gives you substantially more time between charges than Roam 2 for an afternoon or evening outside.
- Portable format: you can bring it out only when needed instead of leaving equipment exposed to weather.
- Protection for normal outdoor use: Sonos characterizes Move 2 as weather-resistant for portable outdoor listening, including resistance to splashes, rain, and snow.
The IP56 label should not be translated into “waterproof.” It identifies a level of dust and water resistance under specified test conditions; it does not make the speaker suitable for immersion, a hose nozzle, or permanent exposure.
#1 Best Overall
- The new acoustic architecture replaces Move's single tweeter with two, unlocking a higher-fidelity stereo soundstage with crisp vocals and detailed instruments. With deep, dynamic bass powered by the precision-tuned woofer, you'll feel the emotional charge of a live performance.
- With automatic Trueplay tuning, Move 2 continually optimizes the sound for its surroundings. So, no matter where you are or what you play, you get the best listening experience.
- Listen twice as long as with the previous generation. All the acoustic updates work in concert for increased efficiency, giving you up to 24 hours of playback on a single charge.
- Shock absorbent materials protect against accidental drops, and the IP56 rating ensures spills, splashes, rain, dirt, and dust don't dampen your listening experience.
- Use the built-in handle to bring your music from one place to the next. When the battery needs a boost, set Move 2 on the included Wireless Charging Base, upgraded with a detachable power cable and more compact adapter. Charge on the go with any USB-PD power supply.
Move 2 limits you need to respect
- Do not submerge Move 2 or spray it with pressurized water. Sonos explicitly says the model is not waterproof.
- Bring it indoors when you are finished using it. Indoor storage reduces exposure to prolonged rain, condensation, freezing conditions, heat, and airborne dirt.
- Keep the charging base indoors. Do not leave the base, its contacts, or a charging connection where rain can reach them.
If Move 2 becomes wet, Sonos advises drying it with a towel and allowing it to air-dry. Before placing it on the charging base, make sure the speaker and charging contacts are dry and free of dirt. Docking a wet or dirty unit can interfere with charging and leave moisture at the electrical contacts.
Roam 2: the compact option with the higher water-protection rating
Roam 2 is the better fit when size and easy carrying matter more than maximum battery life. Sonos presents it as a compact, durable speaker that supports streaming over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Its published outdoor figures are IP67 protection and up to 10 hours of continuous playback.
When Roam 2 makes more sense than Move 2
- Small spaces: it is easier to carry around a balcony, small patio, campsite, or room-to-room route where a larger speaker would be excessive.
- Frequent short sessions: a 10-hour maximum can cover many daytime outings, errands, or a single event.
- Greater stated water protection: IP67 is a different manufacturer rating from Move 2’s IP56. The labels are not a simple “better speaker” score, but Roam 2 is the more water-protected portable model on paper.
Roam 2 is not a leave-outside fixture
The higher IP number does not change Sonos’s storage advice. Store Roam 2 indoors when it is not in use, and use its charging cable or wireless charger indoors. Sonos also advises against salt-water environments. A beach, pool edge, or marine setting therefore requires extra care even if the speaker is used only briefly.
Choose Roam 2 for compactness and water resistance, not because IP67 authorizes permanent outdoor placement. Its battery is also rated for up to 10 hours of continuous playback, so plan for more frequent charging than with Move 2 if you host long events.
Permanent outdoor audio: Sonos Outdoor by Sonance and Sonos Amp
A fixed patio or yard system is a different product category from a battery speaker. Sonos Outdoor by Sonance speakers are designed for installed outdoor use when properly installed. The outdoor guide describes a speaker pair with FastMount brackets, grilles, and wiring-terminal covers. The 2024 surface-mount sell sheet lists IP66 and Mil Spec 810 for that installed product.

What the installed system includes
- Passive outdoor speakers: the speakers do not provide their own wireless amplification.
- Sonos Amp: Sonos identifies Amp as the power source for the outdoor speakers.
- Speaker cable and mounting: cable runs, brackets, terminal covers, and a suitable mounting surface are part of the installation.
Because the speakers are passive, buying the outdoor pair without an amplifier does not create a working Sonos system. You also need to plan cable routing, power for the amplifier, drainage and clearances around the mounts, and protection for indoor electronics. Sonos notes that professional advice may be appropriate, especially when wiring through walls or placing equipment in exposed locations.
When a fixed system is worth the effort
- You want sound available every time you use the patio without carrying, charging, or storing a speaker.
- You need coverage across a larger outdoor area rather than sound concentrated near one portable unit.
- You are comfortable with a wired installation or have an installer handle mounting, cable paths, and amplifier placement.
This route costs more work and creates a permanent installation, but it is the appropriate answer when “outside” means a speaker system that remains mounted through normal seasonal conditions. Do not treat the portable models as substitutes for that requirement.

IP ratings describe resistance to dust and water under defined test conditions. The first digit concerns solid-particle protection and the second concerns water. A higher or different number does not predict sound quality, battery life, or how a product will age in your particular climate.
| Rating in the Sonos options | Where it appears | Practical interpretation | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP56 | Move 2 | Manufacturer-stated dust and water resistance for portable outdoor use | It is waterproof, safe to submerge, or suitable for a pressure washer |
| IP67 | Roam 2 | Manufacturer-stated protection for a compact portable speaker | It can remain outside indefinitely or be used in salt water without additional care |
| IP66 | Outdoor by Sonance surface-mount material | Manufacturer-stated protection for the installed outdoor speaker | The passive speaker works without an amplifier or that every installation condition is safe |
Rain intensity, wind-driven water, salt, dirt, ultraviolet exposure, freezing and thawing, and condensation are different from a short laboratory test. Use the ratings as one selection input, then follow Sonos’s storage, charging, and installation guidance.
How to use Move 2 outdoors safely
- Charge indoors. Place the charging base in a dry indoor location and charge the speaker before taking it outside.
- Inspect before leaving. Check that the enclosure and charging contacts are clean and dry. Remove dirt rather than pushing it into the contacts.
- Choose a sheltered position. A covered table or roofed patio reduces direct rain and prolonged sun while keeping the speaker accessible.
- Keep water away from connections. Do not connect or disconnect charging equipment outdoors in wet conditions, and never use pressurized water for cleaning.
- Bring it in after use. Indoor storage is Sonos’s recommendation when the speaker is not being used.
- Dry before docking. If it gets wet, towel-dry it and let it air-dry fully before returning it to the charging base.
For a gathering, position Move 2 where guests cannot knock it into a pool, planter, or drink. Keep the base inside rather than running a charging cable across a wet patio.

- Precision-engineered drivers produce size-defying clarity and bass
- Ultra compact and lightweight so you can bring Sonos sound anywhere
- Durable, IP67 waterproof and dustproof, and ready for outdoor adventures
- Rechargeable battery gives you up to 10 hours of listening time
- Automatic Trueplay fine-tunes the sound for each new environment
How to use Roam 2 outdoors safely
- Charge indoors with the cable or wireless charger. The charging accessories are intended for indoor use.
- Keep it away from salt water. Avoid placing it where sea spray, salt spray, or salty splash can reach it.
- Use it for the session, then store it inside. IP67 protection does not replace Sonos’s indoor-storage recommendation.
- Check for grit and moisture. Before charging, wipe away sand, dirt, and water and make sure the charging area is dry.
- Plan battery time. The stated maximum is up to 10 hours of continuous playback; high volume and usage conditions can reduce actual runtime.
Portable versus installed: a decision framework
Choose Move 2 if these statements describe you
- You want one speaker that moves between indoor rooms and outside.
- You need the longest published battery life among the portable choices.
- Your outdoor listening is occasional, and you can bring the speaker indoors after use.
- You want to avoid speaker wire, brackets, and an amplifier.
Choose Roam 2 if these statements describe you
- You prioritize the smallest, easiest-to-carry option.
- Your outdoor sessions are generally short enough for an up-to-10-hour stated runtime.
- You value its IP67 rating but still accept indoor storage and indoor charging.
- You are listening in a compact area rather than trying to cover a whole yard.
Choose Outdoor by Sonance with Amp if these statements describe you
- You want speakers mounted in one location for repeated use.
- You need broad, distributed coverage rather than one portable sound source.
- You can run speaker cable and provide a suitable location for Sonos Amp.
- You are willing to plan or hire a professional installation.
Placement, coverage, and weather planning
Portable speakers concentrate sound around their location. A single Move 2 or Roam 2 can work well beside a table or seating area, but it will not distribute identical volume across a large yard. Move the speaker closer to the listeners instead of increasing volume unnecessarily. For multiple seating zones, consider whether carrying one speaker between zones is acceptable; if not, a wired multi-speaker installation may be the better design.

For any outdoor option, identify the most severe condition it may encounter: direct rain, wind-driven rain, snow, freezing temperatures, pool splash, sea spray, dust, or long periods of sun. The published ratings do not remove the need for shelter and indoor storage. Keep portable speakers off wet ground and away from drainage paths, sprinklers, grills, and places where condensation forms overnight.
For installed speakers, mounting height and direction affect both coverage and water exposure. Follow the supplied mounting instructions, use the provided hardware and terminal covers, and keep the amplifier and mains power in a dry, code-compliant location. If cable must pass through an exterior wall, obtain professional advice on sealing and electrical safety.

Calling Move 2 waterproof
Problem: IP56 is repeated as if it means immersion protection. Fix: treat Move 2 as weather-resistant for portable listening, never submerge it, and keep pressurized water away.
Leaving a portable speaker outside all season
Problem: a speaker survives one rainy afternoon and is then left on a deck for weeks. Fix: bring Move 2 or Roam 2 indoors whenever the listening session ends, as Sonos recommends.

Leaving the charging base or cable outdoors
Problem: the speaker is protected but its charging equipment is exposed. Fix: charge indoors, dry the speaker and contacts, and then dock it inside.
Buying passive outdoor speakers without amplification
Problem: Outdoor by Sonance speakers are expected to work as self-powered wireless units. Fix: include Sonos Amp, speaker wiring, mounting, and an installation plan in the system design.
Using a portable model in salt water
Problem: a beach or boat environment is treated like ordinary rain. Fix: Roam 2 guidance advises against salt-water environments; keep portable speakers away from spray and store them indoors afterward.
Assuming the rating predicts audio quality
Problem: IP numbers are used to declare a sound winner. Fix: use them only for protection decisions. The available manufacturer material does not establish an independent comparative listening winner between Move 2 and Roam 2.
What to check before buying
- Use pattern: occasional carry-out listening points to Move 2 or Roam 2; permanent coverage points to the installed system.
- Battery requirement: compare up to 24 hours for Move 2 with up to 10 hours for Roam 2, remembering that actual runtime varies with use.
- Exposure: plan for shelter and indoor storage even when the published IP rating looks generous.
- Charging: make sure you have an indoor place for the base, cable, or wireless charger.
- Coverage: one portable speaker serves a local listening area; a mounted pair is more appropriate for distributed yard coverage.
- Installation tolerance: a fixed system requires wiring, an amplifier, mounting, and possibly professional help.
- Evidence quality: the figures in this guide are Sonos product claims, not independent durability tests or a subjective sound ranking.
Bottom line
Buy Move 2 for the most flexible portable outdoor use: its IP56 protection and up to 24-hour battery make it the strongest general-purpose match, provided you store it indoors and keep its charging base dry. Pick Roam 2 when compact size and the higher published IP67 rating matter more than runtime. If you want outdoor audio that stays installed, use Sonos Outdoor by Sonance speakers with Sonos Amp and plan the wiring and mounting as a real outdoor installation. None of these choices should be treated as permission to ignore the manufacturer’s storage, charging, salt-water, or installation guidance.
