Fresh Cab is the only mouse-repellent pouch in the available evidence with a documented EPA-accepted label. That label specifies balsam fir oil and gives a placement rate for enclosed storage spaces. It does not establish that pouches will stop every mouse from entering a home or eliminate an active infestation. If mice are already present, use trapping, food control, and entry-point sealing rather than relying on scent alone.
Which mouse repellent pouch is a substantiated pick?
Fresh Cab’s EPA-accepted product label, dated April 10, 2023, identifies balsam fir oil at 2.0% as the active ingredient. Fragrance oil and plant fibers make up the remaining 98.0% of the listed ingredients. The label also lists “Mouse Pouch” among the product’s alternate brand names.
This makes Fresh Cab a documented option to consider for the enclosed storage areas named on its label. It is not an evidence-based “best overall” winner: the available sources do not provide an independent, head-to-head trial comparing pouch brands or measured results showing how well one performs against another.

Where and how should you place the pouches?
The Fresh Cab label directs users to place one pouch per 8 square feet in areas to be protected. Its examples include attics, basements, garages, sheds, pantries, barns, storage units, vehicles, boats, cabins, farm equipment, and RVs. It describes use in non-living enclosed storage spaces, so do not assume the same directions apply to every room or use case.

- Check that the intended space matches the label. The label is directed at enclosed storage areas; consult the packaging for the full current directions before use.
- Calculate the number of pouches from the area. Follow the rate of one pouch per 8 square feet. For example, the label says to use four pouches in a single-car garage or one in a pantry.
- Replace by condition, not a fixed calendar promise. The label says to replace a pouch when its scent has diminished. It also says effectiveness depends on air-exchange rates and temperature.
- Keep pouches out of children’s reach. Follow all other safety and use directions on the package.
The label says the product can be effective for “up to 30 days,” but that is a label claim, not a guaranteed or independently verified duration. Air exchange and temperature can affect how long the scent lasts.
Do peppermint pouches or oils keep mice out?
Do not treat peppermint as a reliable way to prevent mice from entering a home. An Ask Extension expert response, dated January 17, 2023, states: “Peppermint is not going to deter mice from entering your home.” That response addresses peppermint as a home-entry deterrent; it is not a comparison of every pouch formulation.

The EPA’s guidance on skin-applied repellents concerns products applied to skin, not rodent pouches. It says certain exempt ingredients used in skin-applied repellents have not been evaluated for effectiveness. It should not be read as evidence for or against a mouse pouch.

- Set snap traps where mice are active, following the trap’s instructions and any applicable safety precautions.
- Remove access to food, including pet food, and store food so mice cannot reach it.
- Find entry points and block them with materials mice cannot chew through, such as steel wool, hardware cloth with 1/4-inch squares, or concrete patching.
Pouches may be considered for the label-specified storage use, but the available evidence does not establish that they prevent all mouse entry, cure an infestation, or outperform trapping and exclusion.
