About 4 feet (1.2 m) above the ground is the usual starting point for mounting a video doorbell for motion detection. It is not a universal optimum: follow your exact model’s installation guide, then check live view and recorded clips to confirm the camera sees the face, doorstep, and approach you care about.
What height do manufacturers recommend?
Several manufacturers recommend a position near 4 feet, but guidance varies by model. These are manufacturer recommendations, not results from controlled tests comparing detection performance across brands.
| Manufacturer or model | Recommended height | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ring | 48 in (1.22 m) | Ring describes this as the height for optimal motion detection. It cautions that mounting too high or too low can contribute to inconsistent detection or unwanted motion events. Ring support |
| Google Nest | 4 ft (1.2 m) | Google says the doorbell’s tall field of view can help it view and detect people and packages at this height. Google Nest Help |
| eufy Video Doorbell E340 | 48 in (1.2 m) | The E340 guide recommends this for a new installation and describes a 15-degree wedge for angle adjustment. eufy E340 guide |
| Reolink Video Doorbell models listed in its guidance | 1.2 m (48 in) | The recommendation applies to the listed Reolink models. The same article discusses side-to-side motion sensitivity in a broader battery-camera section; that behavior should not be assumed for every doorbell. Reolink Support |
| Wyze Battery Video Doorbell | 4 ft | Wyze recommends this height for motion detection and usability on this product. Wyze product page |
| Swann | 1.2–1.6 m (3.9–5.2 ft) | This broader suggested range differs from the roughly 1.2 m recommendations above; the exact model’s instructions should guide placement. Swann Support |

How to choose the position before drilling
- Check your model’s instructions. If they support a position near 4 ft (1.2 m), use that as your initial target. Measure from the ground to the planned mounting point.
- Preview the image from the intended position. Temporarily hold or position the doorbell and inspect its live view. Check that the image includes the visitor’s face, the doorstep or package area, and the part of the approach where you want motion alerts. Google advises checking for obstructions and reviewing live or recorded video; eufy also recommends checking live view before choosing a location.
- Look for objects that block or distort the scene. Keep plants, decorations, walls, and other obstacles out of the intended view where possible. Google notes that motion in obstructed areas will not generate alerts. eufy warns that, for its cited guidance, a nearby side wall in frame can reflect infrared light and blur night vision. See eufy positioning guidance.
- Adjust the angle if the geometry calls for it. A compatible wedge or corner mount can redirect the view vertically or horizontally when stairs, angled siding, a path, a corner, or an adjacent wall obstructs the desired framing. Ring describes wedge and corner kits for these situations; the eufy E340 guide specifies a 15-degree wedge. Check your model’s compatibility and the included hardware before buying.
- Review clips after installation. Check whether recorded events cover the approach you want. If not, correct the framing first, then review the detection settings available for your model.
What if the doorway does not fit the 4-foot starting point?
The existing wiring is higher
If your model’s instructions allow it, use a compatible angled wedge to aim the camera toward the approach and doorstep. Ring specifically recommends a wedge when existing wiring is higher than its suggested mounting height. Confirm the permitted setup and accessory fit in your exact model’s manual.

The door is above stairs or a raised landing
Preview the view from the actual mounting position. Stairs and elevation changes can make a straight-on view miss the area you want, so adjust the vertical angle with compatible hardware if needed. Ring identifies stairs and elevation changes as reasons a wedge may help.
A wall is close to the doorbell
Try to frame the scene without the nearby wall. In eufy’s cited guidance, a side wall in frame can reflect infrared light and blur night vision; the effect is specific to that guidance and should not be generalized to every device.

The only practical position is around 5 feet
Five feet is not established as a universal cutoff. Swann’s suggested range extends to 5.2 ft, while several other manufacturers recommend about 4 ft. Follow the exact model’s instructions and judge the position by the live view and recorded clips rather than height alone.

Why height alone cannot guarantee alerts
A camera mounted at the recommended height can still miss motion if the approach is outside its view or blocked. Framing, angle, nearby objects, and the device’s own detection behavior all matter. Manufacturer height recommendations are guidance for installation—not a promise that a particular mounting point will detect every visitor, package, or movement.
