How do I unlock my Moto G Power? First identify what is locked. A carrier (network) lock, bootloader lock, forgotten screen credential, and SIM PIN lock are different problems controlled by different parties. The original carrier handles a network unlock; Motorola’s bootloader program handles software-unlock eligibility; a forgotten screen credential may require Google-account recovery or a factory reset; and a blocked SIM requires the carrier’s PUK.
The exact steps depend on your Moto G Power generation, model number, country, and carrier variant. The current Motorola guide available for this decision is for the 2026 Moto G Power, while the Verizon activation example cited here is specifically for the 2021 model. Do not assume a menu, policy, radio band, or eligibility rule from one year applies to another.
Identify the lock before changing anything
Use the message on the phone, not the word “unlock” alone, to choose a route. These locks are not interchangeable: a bootloader code will not remove a carrier restriction, and a factory reset will not supply a SIM PUK. If you are unsure, write down the exact wording shown on screen and note whether the problem appeared after inserting another carrier’s SIM, after forgetting your Android credential, or while attempting software development.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| What you see or want to do | What is locked | Who controls the remedy | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A different carrier’s SIM is rejected, or the phone asks for a network/subsidy unlock | Carrier or network lock | The original carrier that sold or authorized the phone | Eligibility varies; an unlocked phone may still have limited compatibility on another network |
| You want root access, custom firmware, or other operating-system changes | Bootloader | Motorola’s device-specific bootloader program | Exact-model restrictions, possible software damage, safety issues, and warranty-support consequences |
| You forgot the PIN, pattern, or password used to open Android | Screen lock | Google-account recovery or Motorola reset instructions | A factory reset deletes data stored on the phone |
| The phone asks for a SIM PIN, or the SIM is blocked after failed attempts | SIM-card security | The mobile carrier that issued the SIM | Repeated guesses can require a PUK; do not keep trying random codes |
Think of the table as a decision tree. A carrier lock concerns permission to use a radio network. A bootloader lock concerns permission to replace or alter startup software. A screen lock protects the phone’s user data, while a SIM PIN protects the subscriber module. Choosing the wrong procedure can cause data loss without solving the original problem.

Unlock the phone from a specific carrier
For a network or subsidy lock, Motorola’s support guidance is unambiguous: Only your carrier can unlock your phone.
Motorola cannot override the original carrier’s policy. If you do not know which carrier owns the lock, Motorola can help identify the registered network from the phone’s IMEI.
Check the IMEI
- Open the Phone app.
- Dial
*#06#. The IMEI appears on screen. Write it down exactly; a dual-SIM device can show more than one IMEI. - Compare the result with the IMEI on the box, purchase record, or SIM tray label. Do not publish the number publicly.
If the phone cannot reach the dialer, look in Settings > About phone or on the original packaging. When speaking with support, provide the IMEI privately through an official carrier channel. An incorrect digit can make a carrier check the wrong device record.
Prepare before contacting the original carrier
Have the full model number, model year, country of sale, account holder’s information, and proof of purchase or ownership available. Carriers may check whether the handset is paid off, whether installment obligations remain, whether the account is in good standing, and whether the IMEI is associated with loss, theft, fraud, or another account. Those requirements are carrier-specific and can change, so ask the carrier to state the failed condition rather than relying on advice for a different Moto G Power variant.
Recommended Free Tools
Request the carrier unlock
- Identify the carrier that sold, financed, or originally activated the Moto G Power.
- Ask support to check the IMEI for a SIM or network unlock. State the exact model and the country in which you intend to use it.
- Complete any identity, account, payment, or service requirements the carrier gives you.
- Follow the carrier’s delivery instructions. Some eligible phones unlock remotely; others may require a carrier-specific app, settings action, or an on-screen confirmation.
- After the carrier confirms completion, power the phone off, insert the new SIM or configure the new eSIM, and restart. If the new network is not recognized, contact the new carrier for activation and provisioning rather than requesting a second type of unlock.
Ask whether the request is automatic or requires a confirmation step. Keep the case number, approval message, and date. If the phone remains locked after the carrier says it is approved, restart it as directed, check for a pending carrier app or system update, and call the same carrier with the case number. Do not erase the phone or alter its bootloader merely because the first activation attempt failed.
T-Mobile’s published policy illustrates why timing cannot be generalized: for an eligible device that supports remote unlocking, T-Mobile says the remote unlock occurs within two business days. That statement applies to T-Mobile’s qualifying cases, not to every carrier or every Moto G Power. Other carriers may use different waiting periods, eligibility tests, or delivery methods, and no universal fee or completion time applies to all versions.
Check compatibility after the unlock
A SIM-unlocked phone is not guaranteed to work fully on every network. Carriers use different radio bands, network technologies, voice-over-LTE requirements, and provisioning systems. Verizon warns that an unlocked device can have limited functionality or fail to work on another carrier when technologies differ. An unlocked status therefore answers only whether the original carrier restriction was removed; it does not certify every calling, texting, data, eSIM, or 5G feature.
Model-year and carrier variants matter. For example, Motorola’s activation guidance for the Moto G Power (2021) says a Verizon user needs a SIM provisioned for Verizon. That is a model-specific activation requirement, not proof that every Moto G Power has the same behavior. Before switching, ask the destination carrier to check the exact model number and IMEI for voice, data, messaging, eSIM, and 5G support. Confirm that the destination carrier supports the phone’s physical-SIM or eSIM format and that its network allows the device’s technology generation.

If the carrier refuses the request
- Ask which eligibility condition failed and whether a balance, installment, fraud flag, or account issue is responsible.
- Confirm that the IMEI you supplied is the phone’s original IMEI and not a replacement-device record.
- Ask whether the model is a carrier-exclusive version that cannot be unlocked under that carrier’s policy.
- If the phone was bought used, contact the seller when the account or theft status belongs to someone else. Do not pay an unverified third party for a “master code.”
- Ask the destination carrier to verify compatibility independently. A refusal by the original carrier and a compatibility failure are separate issues.
If the handset is reported lost or stolen, do not attempt to bypass that status. Resolve ownership with the seller and the carrier. A factory reset, bootloader token, or new SIM does not clear an IMEI block.
Unlock the bootloader for software modification
Bootloader unlocking is for advanced users who want to install or modify operating-system software. It does not remove a carrier SIM restriction, recover a forgotten screen PIN, or unblock a SIM card. If your only goal is to use another network, this route adds risk without helping.
Motorola says many recent devices may be supported, but eligibility is checked for the exact device. Restrictions include some service-provider-exclusive models, and the available material does not establish eligibility for every Moto G Power generation or carrier variant. A retail model and a carrier-exclusive model with the same family name can receive different answers.
Check eligibility through Motorola’s official process
- Record the exact model and carrier variant from Settings > About phone and from the original purchase information.
- Read Motorola’s current bootloader-unlock page and the live legal agreement presented for your device. The agreement, not an old forum post, determines whether Motorola will issue an unlock token.
- Run the device-eligibility check. If the model is excluded, do not try to force the process with a code intended for another model.
- If Motorola accepts the device, follow the on-screen instructions exactly, including any required account sign-in, identifier submission, and Android platform-tool commands.
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator data, and files before proceeding. Keep a copy outside the phone and ensure you can restore your Google account.
Unlocking commonly requires a computer and technical commands, but the exact tools and commands belong to Motorola’s live instructions for the eligible model. Do not substitute instructions for a different generation. Keep the phone charged, use a reliable cable if Motorola requires one, and avoid interrupting the process; an interruption or incorrect image can leave the handset unable to start.

Motorola’s warning is direct: MOTOROLA STRONGLY RECOMMENDS AGAINST UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER AND/OR MODIFYING OR ALTERING A DEVICE’S SOFTWARE OR OPERATING SYSTEM.
The company warns that software changes can cause unsafe operation or permanent damage. Its warranty language says damage resulting from operating-system changes, including bootloader unlocking or rooting, may not be covered; the bootloader agreement also contains broader warranty-waiver language. Read the current agreement for your device before obtaining a code, because legal and support effects depend on that wording and your jurisdiction.
Plan for the possibility of a wipe or a nonworking device. Preserve two-factor-authentication recovery codes, export authenticator accounts where supported, copy contacts and media, and confirm that you know the Google-account credentials needed after setup. A backup on the same phone is not adequate if the unlock process erases its storage.
Do not confuse a bootloader result with a carrier result
A successfully unlocked bootloader can still leave the phone locked to its original network. Conversely, a carrier-approved SIM unlock does not grant root access or permission to replace Android. These are separate authorizations and should be evaluated separately in any repair or purchase decision.

Recover a forgotten screen PIN, pattern, or password
The 2026 Moto G Power user guide says: If you forget your pattern, PIN, or password, you can enter your Google Account email and password on another device to unlock the phone.
Use the Google account that was already associated with the handset, not a newly created account. Account recovery can involve additional identity checks, so begin on a trusted phone or computer with access to the account’s recovery methods.
Try account recovery before resetting
- On another phone or computer, verify that you can sign in to the Google account used on the Moto G Power.
- Complete any account-security checks, such as a recovery email, phone number, or two-step verification.
- Follow Motorola’s current “forgot my passcode” instructions for the model. Keep the phone charged and connected as directed.
- If account recovery cannot unlock the device, decide whether the data is backed up before selecting a reset.
Do not confuse a Google-account prompt after a reset with a carrier unlock request. The former is Android’s ownership protection; the latter concerns cellular-network authorization. Neither a bootloader token nor a SIM PUK supplies the other credential.
Understand the factory-reset consequence
Motorola’s guide states: A factory reset will delete all data on your phone.
That includes local photos, downloads, messages, app data, and accounts that have not been synchronized or backed up. Check Google Photos, Google One, a computer backup, or an SD-card copy before resetting. A reset is a last-resort recovery action, not a carrier unlock.
After a reset, Android may require the Google account that was previously on the phone as theft protection. Make sure you know that account’s password before starting; otherwise you can end up with a reset phone that still cannot be activated. If the phone belongs to someone else, have the previous owner remove the account through the proper ownership process instead of attempting a bypass.
Handle a SIM PIN or PUK request
A SIM PIN protects the SIM card itself. It is separate from the Android screen lock and from a carrier network lock. The carrier supplied the PIN, and the 2026 Moto G Power guide directs you to contact that carrier for a PUK after multiple incorrect attempts disable the SIM.
If the phone is asking for a SIM PIN
- Stop guessing if you are unsure of the code.
- Check the SIM’s original carrier documentation or account portal for the carrier-provided PIN.
- Enter the PIN only when you are certain it is correct.
Some people mistake the phone’s screen PIN, a voicemail PIN, or a carrier account password for the SIM PIN. They are not interchangeable. If you did not enable the SIM PIN yourself, the carrier’s documentation or support team is the safest source for the correct value.
If the SIM is blocked and asks for a PUK
- Do not enter random numbers. A limited number of wrong PUK attempts can permanently disable a SIM.
- Use another phone, the carrier’s website, or an authorized store to contact the carrier that issued the SIM.
- Verify your account and request the PUK. Follow the carrier’s instructions to create a new SIM PIN after the PUK is accepted.
- If the SIM has been permanently disabled, ask the carrier for a replacement SIM or eSIM and have it provisioned for your line.
A carrier unlock code, Motorola bootloader token, or Android factory reset cannot substitute for a PUK. If a replacement SIM is issued, the line may still need normal carrier activation even though the handset itself is already network-unlocked.

Model, edition, and country limits to check
“Moto G Power” is a family name, not one universal hardware configuration. A 2021 Verizon model can have different bands, provisioning, firmware, and unlock rules from a 2026 retail model or a phone sold in another country. Before following any procedure, record:
- Model year and full model number in Settings > About phone.
- Original carrier and country of sale.
- Physical-SIM, eSIM, or dual-SIM configuration.
- Whether the phone is paid off, reported lost or stolen, or attached to an installment account.
- The exact message displayed when the phone rejects a SIM or asks for a code.
- The IMEI or IMEIs, kept private and supplied only through official support channels.
Use the 2026 guide only for a 2026 Moto G Power and treat the Verizon provisioning note as specific to the 2021 example. If your labels or menus differ, obtain the guide for your exact model rather than applying a neighboring year’s instructions. Country matters as well: carrier policies, supported bands, account rules, and consumer protections can differ even when the model name is identical.

There is no single Motorola price, waiting period, or success guarantee for every unlocking situation. Carrier eligibility and any account obligations determine the network route; Motorola’s device check determines bootloader eligibility; Google-account recovery or a reset determines the screen-lock route; and the SIM issuer determines the PUK route. Ask the controlling party about current charges, if any, before authorizing service, and get the terms in writing.
Do not treat a paid code website as a shortcut. The official paths are carrier, Motorola, Google-account, and SIM-carrier processes. A third-party promise cannot change an unpaid balance, a theft block, an excluded model, or incompatible radio bands. If the handset cannot be unlocked or will not support the intended network, a clearly generation-labeled unlocked Moto G Power can be considered as a replacement. It is a replacement purchase, not a method for unlocking the current phone; verify the exact model and destination-carrier compatibility before buying.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset a phone merely because another carrier’s SIM is rejected; the reset does not remove a network lock.
- Do not unlock the bootloader to solve a forgotten PIN or SIM PUK request.
- Do not keep guessing a SIM PIN or PUK.
- Do not assume that “unlocked” means every band, voice feature, or 5G service will work on the destination carrier.
- Do not use a code sold by an unverified unlocking website. The official remedies are carrier, Motorola, Google-account, and SIM-carrier processes.
- Do not begin bootloader modification without a backup and a review of Motorola’s current warning and agreement.
- Do not publish your IMEI, account number, or recovery codes in a forum or social-media post.
A practical decision checklist
- Read the exact prompt: network/SIM rejected, bootloader request, forgotten screen credential, or SIM PIN/PUK.
- Write down the model year, model number, original carrier, country, and IMEI using
*#06#when appropriate. - Use the controlling party’s route: original carrier for a network lock, Motorola for bootloader eligibility, Google-account/Motorola recovery for a screen lock, and the SIM issuer for a PIN or PUK.
- Back up data before any reset or operating-system modification.
- After a carrier unlock, have the new carrier check IMEI compatibility and provisioning.
- Stop if the instructions do not match your model or the on-screen message; obtain model-specific support instead of trying another lock procedure.
- Keep confirmation numbers, approval emails, and the exact model information for any follow-up call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Motorola unlock my Moto G Power from a carrier?
No. Motorola states, “Only your carrier can unlock your phone.” Contact the original carrier that sold or activated the device. Motorola can help identify the registered network from the IMEI, which you can display by dialing *#06#.
How long does a Moto G Power carrier unlock take?
There is no universal time. T-Mobile says an eligible device that supports its remote-unlock process is unlocked within two business days. That policy does not promise the same timing for another carrier or Moto G Power variant.

Does bootloader unlocking remove a carrier lock?
No. Bootloader unlocking is for operating-system modification and is separate from a SIM or network unlock. Motorola also warns about possible damage, unsafe operation, and warranty or support consequences.
What should I do if I forgot my Moto G Power PIN?
Use the Google account already associated with the phone and follow Motorola’s current forgotten-passcode instructions. If a factory reset is required, back up first because Motorola says the reset deletes all data on the phone.
Where do I get a SIM PUK for a Moto G Power?
The carrier that issued the SIM supplies the PUK. Stop entering guesses, contact the carrier through another phone, its website, or an authorized store, and follow its instructions. A bootloader code or factory reset cannot replace a PUK.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I use a paid unlocking website or master code?
Avoid unverified code sellers. The supported remedies are controlled by the original carrier, Motorola’s official bootloader process, Google-account recovery, or the SIM carrier. A third party cannot clear account, theft, eligibility, or compatibility restrictions.
What information should I have ready when calling support?
Prepare the exact model number and year, original carrier and country, IMEI, the displayed error, and ownership or account details. Keep the IMEI private and provide it only through an official support channel.
The Bottom Line
Identify the lock first. The original carrier controls a network unlock; Motorola controls exact-model bootloader eligibility; Google-account recovery or a reset addresses a forgotten screen credential; and the SIM issuer provides a PIN or PUK. Back up before resets or software changes, and verify destination-network compatibility even after a carrier says the phone is unlocked.
