Motion blur makes moving objects or the view look smeared; camera shake physically moves the in-game view. They can occur together, but they are different effects and are often controlled separately. Turning off blur will not necessarily stop jolts, and reducing shake will not necessarily make a fast-moving scene sharp.
The names, menu locations and intensity ranges vary by game, version and platform. Use the game’s graphics, gameplay or accessibility settings to find the control that matches the symptom you are seeing.
What motion blur does
Motion blur is a rendered blurring effect associated with camera movement and fast-moving objects. Instead of showing every frame with crisp edges, the game blends movement across a frame so that objects, weapon animations or the whole image appear to streak. Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine accessibility description defines its motion-blur control as toggling “the blurring effect created by camera motions and fast-moving objects.”

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBlur can be applied to more than one layer of a scene. A game may blur the world when you turn quickly, blur a weapon during an attack, or offer separate controls for each. Battlefield 6, for example, distinguishes world motion blur from weapon motion blur. That means disabling one may leave the other visible.

How blur looks to the player
- Edges trail or smear while the camera pans.
- Fast enemies, vehicles or environmental objects lose crisp outlines while moving.
- Weapon animations can look soft even when the surrounding scene is sharp.
- The image may feel unfocused without the viewpoint actually jumping.
Motion blur is therefore primarily an image-treatment problem. The camera can follow a perfectly smooth path while the rendered image still looks streaked.
What camera shake does
Camera shake is a short, abrupt movement of the camera or view. God of War Ragnarök describes its shake setting as controlling “short, high-frequency, and sudden camera movements,” usually during combat. The viewpoint itself shifts, jolts or vibrates rather than merely becoming soft.
Camera shake, camera sway and camera bob are related but different
Games often group several kinds of camera movement under comfort or accessibility settings. They are not interchangeable:

| Effect | What the player sees | Typical context or example |
|---|---|---|
| Motion blur | Moving objects or the view appear smeared. | Camera motion and fast-moving objects; Marvel’s Wolverine uses this definition. |
| Camera shake | Sudden, short jolts or vibrations of the viewpoint. | Often combat events; God of War Ragnarök separates this control. |
| Camera sway | Slower, handheld or looping movement. | Ambient movement while idling or traversing in God of War Ragnarök. |
| Camera bob | Repetitive up-and-down movement. | Often linked to walking or sprinting; Battlefield 6 offers a sprint-camera-bobbing control. |
A practical test follows from those descriptions: if edges and moving objects smear, suspect blur; if the entire view shifts, suspect shake, sway or bob. This is a player-facing way to distinguish the effects, not a universal technical taxonomy. Each game can implement them differently.
Why the effects are easy to confuse
A fast turn can trigger both effects at once. The camera rotates, the game adds a brief jolt for impact, and motion blur softens the resulting frame. To the player, that can feel like one unpleasant visual event even though several settings are responsible.
The controls also use inconsistent labels. One title may say Camera Shake; another may call the same family of movement Screen Shake. Constant movement while walking could be labeled Camera Bob, Ambient Sway, Weapon Sway, Camera Follow or Camera Rotation. Read the description beside the option instead of relying on the label alone.
How to identify which effect is bothering you
- Watch a stationary scene. Stand still and look at a fixed object. If the image is already soft or trails when you turn, motion blur is a likely contributor.
- Trigger an impact. Take damage, fire a weapon or perform a heavy attack. A sudden displacement of the whole view points to camera or screen shake.
- Walk and sprint. Repeated vertical movement tied to footsteps is camera bob. A slower floating or looping motion during idle or traversal is closer to ambient sway.
- Check weapon-only movement. If the environment remains clear but the hands or weapon smear, look for a weapon-blur or weapon-sway option rather than the general blur control.
- Change one setting at a time. Apply a change, reproduce the same event and compare. This prevents attributing an improvement to the wrong control.
How to reduce the effects in a game
There is no universal menu path because labels and locations depend on the title, edition, platform and version. The following sequence works as a reliable search strategy.

1. Reduce or disable motion blur
- Open Settings, then inspect Graphics, Display, Gameplay and Accessibility.
- Find Motion Blur, Camera Motion Blur or a similarly named option.
- Set it to Off or move its intensity to the lowest available value.
- If separate entries exist, test World Motion Blur and Weapon Motion Blur independently, as Battlefield 6 does.
- Return to the scene that produced the smear. Some controls affect gameplay only, a particular camera view or selected events.
2. Reduce camera or screen shake
- Search the same settings areas for Camera Shake or Screen Shake.
- Lower the intensity slider or select the reduced setting.
- Test a combat impact, explosion or heavy attack rather than only walking.
- Check the slider’s description and range. Battlefield 6 states that its shake control reduces some shake but does not completely eliminate every instance.
3. Address persistent movement
If the discomfort continues during ordinary movement, inspect controls for Camera Bob, Ambient Sway, Weapon Sway, Camera Follow and Camera Rotation. Disable or reduce the specific behavior that matches the symptom. A shake slider is not a substitute for a bob or sway control.
4. Use broader comfort options
Accessibility menus may also provide Field of View, Camera Distance, Camera Follow, automatic-camera-movement controls, sensitivity adjustments or a persistent center dot. Microsoft’s Xbox accessibility guidance recommends customizable field of view and camera movement. The Last of Us Part I groups camera shake, motion blur, camera distance, field of view and a persistent center dot among its motion-sickness options. God of War Ragnarök provides separate controls for shake, sway, blur and a center dot.
5. Re-test in the original situation
Play through the exact activity that caused the problem: sprinting, aiming, idling, traversing or combat. A setting may apply only to gameplay, only to a first-person or third-person view, or only to particular scripted camera events. Do not assume that a visible slider removes every source of movement.
What official game examples show
These examples illustrate why settings cannot be assumed to work identically across games.

| Game or guidance | Controls or definition described | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine (Insomniac) | Motion blur toggles the blur created by camera motions and fast-moving objects. | The description establishes the visual target; other camera-movement controls may still be separate. |
| God of War Ragnarök | Separate controls cover camera shake, ambient camera sway, motion blur and a center dot. | Shake is short, high-frequency movement; sway is slower, handheld and looping. |
| Battlefield 6 (EA) | Options include world and weapon motion blur, camera shake and sprint camera bobbing. | The shake reduction does not completely eliminate every instance of shake. |
| The Last of Us Part I (PlayStation, feature list published 2022-08-26) | Motion-sickness options include camera shake, motion blur, camera distance, field of view and a persistent center dot. | These are examples of that game’s implementation, not a guarantee for every title. |
| Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 (Microsoft) | Recommends avoiding camera shake, camera bobbing and motion blur, or providing a way to turn them off. | This is accessibility guidance, not a claim that every game must expose identical controls. |
Why these settings matter for motion sensitivity
Microsoft explains that visual camera movement can conflict with a seated player’s lack of corresponding body movement and may contribute to motion sickness. Its guidance specifically names camera shake, camera bobbing and motion blur as behaviors to avoid or make optional.
Reducing movement can also improve readability. A stable view makes small targets easier to track, keeps interface elements from jumping and can make long sessions less tiring. Those benefits are subjective: a setting that helps one player may not solve another player’s symptoms, and no single toggle is guaranteed to work for everyone.
Accessibility controls should be treated as independent tools. A player may need blur disabled but retain a little shake for impact feedback, or remove bobbing while leaving a wider field of view. Start with the effect that matches the symptom and adjust only as far as comfort requires.

Common problems and fixes
“I turned off motion blur, but the screen still moves.”
Blur affects image sharpness, not necessarily camera displacement. Lower camera shake, screen shake, camera bob, ambient sway or weapon sway separately. Reproduce the event that causes the movement because a combat shake setting may not affect walking bob.
“I lowered camera shake, but the image is still smeared.”
Look for general, world and weapon blur controls. A shake reduction changes the camera path; it does not automatically disable blur applied during that path.
“The shake slider reaches its minimum, but impacts still move the view.”
Some sliders reduce only part of the effect. Battlefield 6 explicitly notes that its shake control does not completely eliminate every instance. Check for additional scripted-camera, recoil, explosion or impact options, and test whether the remaining movement comes from bobbing or sway instead.
“Movement is constant even when I am not fighting.”
Inspect camera bob and ambient sway first. Bob is commonly tied to walking or sprinting, while sway can continue during idling or traversal. Weapon sway may remain while aiming even when world motion is disabled.
“I cannot find any of these settings.”
Search both the main settings and the accessibility menu. Some games place motion-sickness options together; others distribute them between graphics, gameplay and camera sections. The exact labels and availability can change with platform and version, so consult the descriptions shown in your installed build.

A closer way to compare two games’ settings
When evaluating options across titles, compare the behavior they target rather than assuming two similarly named sliders do the same thing. First ask whether the control affects blur, abrupt shake, sustained sway or repetitive bobbing. Then check whether it is a simple on/off switch or an intensity slider. A title with a slider may offer more gradual control, but its minimum value may still leave some movement.
Next, look for scope. Does the option cover the entire world, only the weapon, only a particular camera view or only selected events? Battlefield 6’s separate world and weapon blur entries demonstrate why this matters. Finally, test the option in the situation where you noticed the problem. A setting that changes combat impacts may not alter sprinting, idling or traversal.

| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What visual behavior is targeted? | Blur, shake, sway and bob require different controls. |
| Is the control on/off or adjustable? | An intensity range can allow a compromise, but the minimum may not equal zero. |
| Are world and weapon effects separate? | Turning off world blur may leave a weapon animation blurred. |
| Does zero remove everything? | Some games reduce only selected instances of movement. |
| Where does it apply? | Gameplay, aiming, traversal, combat and scripted scenes may be handled differently. |
A careful setup workflow
- Record the symptom in plain language. Note whether you see smearing, a sudden jolt, regular footstep movement or slow floating motion.
- Open every likely category. Check graphics or display for blur, gameplay or camera for movement, and accessibility for motion-sickness presets and comfort tools.
- Change one variable. Keep other options unchanged so you can tell which control helped.
- Use a repeatable test. Turn in place for blur, perform the same heavy attack for shake, sprint the same distance for bob and stand idle for sway.
- Check remaining layers. If the environment improves but the weapon does not, inspect weapon-specific controls. If combat improves but walking does not, inspect bob or sway.
- Stop at a comfortable compromise. You do not have to disable every effect if a lower intensity is comfortable, but comfort should take priority over preserving a visual flourish.
What these settings cannot promise
A setting name is not a universal technical standard. “Camera shake” can cover different events in different games, and “motion blur” can be applied to the world, the weapon or both. A reduction slider can also be selective rather than global. That is why the option description, its range and an in-game test are more reliable than the label alone.
There is also no universal best configuration. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance recommends avoiding these behaviors or allowing them to be turned off, but individual comfort varies. One player may prefer a stable camera and no blur; another may tolerate a small amount of sway or shake while removing only blur. The Last of Us Part I and God of War Ragnarök show that games can bundle several related controls, but other titles may offer fewer choices.
Practical decision checklist
- Blurred edges or trails: lower motion blur; check world and weapon blur separately.
- Sudden jolts during impacts: lower camera or screen shake.
- Repeated vertical footsteps movement: lower camera bob or sprint-camera bobbing.
- Slow floating movement while idle or traversing: lower ambient sway.
- View continually follows or rotates: inspect camera-follow and automatic-camera options.
- Discomfort remains: try field-of-view, camera-distance, sensitivity and center-dot options, then retest the same activity.
The most reliable comparison is not the name of a slider but the behavior it targets, whether the control is on/off or adjustable, whether world and weapon blur are separate, whether the minimum value truly removes the effect, and where in gameplay the option applies.
Bottom line for choosing settings
Think of motion blur as softness added to moving imagery and camera shake as movement of the viewpoint itself. Sway and bob are additional movement patterns that can persist outside combat. Turn down the control that matches what you see, verify whether the game offers separate layers or intensity limits, and test the result in the exact scene that causes trouble. The right combination is game-specific, but distinguishing blur from movement makes the available options much easier to use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is motion blur the same as camera shake?
No. Motion blur smears moving objects or the view, while camera shake abruptly moves the viewpoint. They can occur together and usually have separate controls.
Why is the screen still moving after I turn off motion blur?
Motion blur changes image sharpness, not camera movement. Check camera shake, screen shake, camera bob, ambient sway, camera follow and weapon sway separately.
Why does the image remain blurry after I lower camera shake?
Shake controls change the camera path. Look for general motion blur and separate world or weapon blur settings.

What is the difference between camera shake and camera bob?
Camera shake is usually a short, sudden movement during events such as combat. Camera bob is repetitive movement, commonly an up-and-down motion tied to walking or sprinting.
What is camera sway?
Camera sway is slower, handheld or looping movement, often visible while idling or traversing. It is different from both abrupt shake and image blur.
Does setting camera shake to zero remove every movement?
Not necessarily. Some games reduce selected instances without eliminating every camera movement. Battlefield 6 specifically notes that its shake control does not completely remove every instance.
Where should I look for motion-sickness settings?
Check Graphics, Display, Gameplay, Camera and Accessibility menus. Games place these controls differently, and labels can vary by platform and version.
What should I change first if visual movement makes me uncomfortable?
Identify the symptom first. Disable or reduce blur for smearing, shake for sudden jolts, bob for footstep movement and sway for slow floating motion. Then test field of view, camera distance, sensitivity or a center dot if needed.
The Bottom Line
Motion blur softens moving imagery; camera shake moves the viewpoint. Camera sway and bob are additional movement effects, and each may have its own control. Match the setting to the symptom, check whether world and weapon effects are separate, and verify the result in the exact gameplay situation that causes discomfort.
