Motion blur can be the most annoying visual effect in a game if you want a crisp, stable image—but it has not been shown to be the worst effect for everyone. One study of a high-speed racing game found no significant improvement in player performance or experience when simulated blur was added. That makes motion blur an easy setting to try turning down, not a universally proven problem.
What motion blur does—and why games use it
Motion blur simulates the streaking or softening associated with movement in a camera image. A game may apply it across the screen as the camera moves, or to individual moving objects; some games expose separate controls for those effects. Developers use blur to suggest speed or a cinematic, realistic look. It can also soften strobing or other temporal artifacts.
Whether that trade-off works for you depends on the game and your preferences. Blur can make fast movement feel more fluid to some players, while others find that it obscures detail or makes the image feel less clear.
Does evidence confirm that motion blur is the worst game effect?
No. The word “worst” expresses a preference, and the available evidence does not establish a cross-game ranking or a population-wide consensus. Complaints about blur are not a survey, and there is no reliable percentage here for how many players dislike it.

A relevant study by Sharan, Neo, Mitchell, and Hodgins, “Simulated motion blur does not improve player experience in racing game”, tested Split/Second: Velocity. Participants could reliably detect simulated blur, but the researchers found no significant improvement in objective performance or reported player experience when it was present. The authors concluded that blur, while useful for reducing artifacts and achieving a realistic look, did not significantly enhance the experience under the tested conditions.
That result is limited to one racing game and its study conditions. The authors explicitly did not rule out a meaningful role for blur in other gaming scenarios. It also does not show that blur universally harms performance, causes motion sickness, or is the most disliked effect.

Why some players turn it off
For a player who values a sharp, readable image—especially during fast camera movement—blur can feel like an unwanted layer between the player and the action. Someone who prefers a cinematic presentation may choose to keep some of it. Neither preference is a universal rule.
Accessibility guidance treats blur as one of several camera effects that can affect comfort for some people. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 advises developers to avoid effects such as camera shake, camera bobbing, motion blur and mouse blur, or provide an option to turn them off. Valve’s Steamworks Camera Comfort guidance says camera effects such as screen shake, motion blur and camera bob can cause discomfort or harm to some players. These are developer recommendations, not findings that every player is affected.

How to decide whether to disable it
- Find the game’s graphics, video or camera settings. Menu names and paths vary by game and platform, so there is no reliable universal sequence.
- Set motion blur to Off or zero intensity. If the game offers a slider or presets instead, reduce the intensity and compare the image during the same kind of movement.
- Check when the setting applies. Some games distinguish gameplay from cutscenes, or offer separate camera-wide and object blur controls. Keep a cinematic effect in cutscenes if you like it but want clearer gameplay, where those controls are available.
- Change one setting at a time. If discomfort or visual clutter remains, try screen shake, camera bob or sway, field of view, or camera movement speed individually. This helps identify which change actually improves your experience.
Microsoft’s Camera Comfort feature criteria treat an off or zero setting as the relevant control for camera-comfort features. Its list is not exhaustive, and the criteria recognize that camera effects may be scoped differently in cinematics and gameplay.

Motion blur is only one possible contributor to discomfort. Try adjusting other camera-motion settings one at a time, and consider whether the field of view or camera movement speed is a better fit for you. The right combination varies from game to game and player to player; disabling blur is not a guarantee that motion-related discomfort will stop.
