There is no single permanent “most downloaded” Minecraft modpack. Rankings change depending on whether a list measures lifetime downloads or recent activity. On the latest figures available, All the Mods 10 (ATM10) leads recent activity, while RLCraft has the strongest all-time claim. Pixelmon Modpack is also among the largest by reported lifetime downloads. To host any of them successfully, match the Minecraft version and loader, install the pack’s server files rather than the client download, and size Java and memory for that specific pack.
This guide explains what the download numbers mean, compares the leading packs, and gives a practical setup path for a managed panel, home computer, or VPS. Download totals are approximate snapshots and will continue to change.
What “most downloaded” means
Modpack rankings are easy to misread because different pages use different metrics. An all-time total rewards an established pack that has been available for years. A recent-activity ranking highlights what players are installing and playing now. Those measures can produce different leaders without either list being wrong.
- All-time downloads: cumulative downloads over the pack’s life. This favors older, durable packs.
- Recent activity: current downloads, updates, or player interest over a shorter period. This favors packs with a strong present-day community.
- Search-list visibility: editorial lists and summaries may mention a pack without displaying a verifiable, page-level total.
Before repeating a “most downloaded” claim, identify the metric and the date of the count. The figures below come from snapshots published in 2026 or from undated pages, so they are not permanent standings. A number should be read as “approximately this many downloads at the cited snapshot,” not as a live counter.

The ATM10 discrepancy illustrates why precision matters: the 2026 CurseForge listing shows about 22.2 million, while ChampBop reports 18.7 million in an undated list. RLCraft likewise appears at more than 24 million on one page and at least 27 million on another. These are not necessarily contradictory measurements; they may reflect different capture dates, counters, or definitions.
Which pack is actually number one?
If “number one” means current momentum, ATM10 is the best-supported answer in the supplied 2026 snapshot. Its CurseForge listing calls it the top pack of 2026, reports roughly 22.2 million downloads, and describes a pack of around 500 mods. Cubion also identifies ATM10 as a leader in downloads and active players. If “number one” means lifetime downloads, RLCraft is the safer answer: independent published figures place it above 24 million and as high as 27 million or more. Pixelmon Modpack follows closely in the cited ranking at more than 19.8 million.

Choose a pack before choosing a server
Server requirements are determined by the pack’s release, not merely by its name. A pack can have multiple Minecraft versions, different loaders, and separate client and server distributions. Write down these four items before renting a machine or opening a home server:
- Exact pack name and release: for example, ATM10 with its specific published version, not just “ATM.”
- Minecraft version: RLCraft is associated with both 1.12.2 and 1.20.1, and those releases are not interchangeable.
- Mod loader: Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge. The loader must match the pack release.
- Server-file source: use the pack’s server pack or server-install instructions, not the ordinary client download.
Record the same information for every player. A client on a different pack revision can fail to connect, report missing mods, or generate a different world. When a project offers more than one branch, agree on one branch before anyone creates a long-term world.
Server pack versus client pack
The client pack is built for a player’s game installation. It can contain graphical or local-only components such as shaders, minimaps, texture packs, and other client-side mods. A dedicated server does not need those files, and some can crash or prevent the server from starting.

The server pack is the distribution intended for a dedicated process. It normally contains the server-side mods, configuration, libraries, and launch files required for that release. If no server pack is offered, follow the project’s documented server-install method rather than copying a client folder and hoping it works.

- Download the server pack for the exact Minecraft and mod-loader version.
- Keep a separate client installation for each player.
- Do not add shaders, minimaps, or texture packs to the server directory unless the pack documentation explicitly says they are server-compatible.
- When troubleshooting a crash, first verify that every file came from the intended server distribution.
Hosting options: managed panel, home computer, or VPS
There are three practical routes. A managed panel is the least technical: the provider supplies an installer or an import tool for the pack and loader. Manual hosting on a home computer gives direct control but requires networking, operating-system maintenance, and a machine that can remain available. A VPS provides a remote always-on machine with similar manual control and adds administration and recurring infrastructure costs.

“Managed” does not mean the pack is automatically compatible. Confirm the panel supports the loader, Minecraft version, Java runtime, storage, and memory recommended by the pack. Manual hosting is not automatically cheaper: the cost trade-off includes electricity, hardware, backups, administration time, and any VPS or panel subscription.

The sequence below applies to a home PC or VPS. The exact filenames differ by pack, but the order prevents the most common installation errors.

Make a dedicated folder on an SSD with enough free space for the server files, generated world, logs, backups, and future updates. Avoid placing the installation inside a synced consumer folder where another program can lock or rewrite files. Use a separate directory for each pack and release so that configurations cannot be mixed.
2. Download the matching server distribution
Obtain the server pack for the exact release you chose. Check its readme for the required loader and Java version. Do not substitute a similarly named client zip. If the project provides an installer rather than a ready-made server pack, use that installer in the empty directory and retain the generated files together.
3. Install the loader’s server files
Run the Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge server installer specified by the pack. The loader and Minecraft version must agree with the pack metadata. A loader mismatch commonly produces missing-class errors or a startup failure before the world loads.
4. Start once, then accept the EULA
Launch the generated server once from the server directory. It will normally create configuration files and stop while waiting for the Minecraft EULA. Open eula.txt, read the agreement, and change the setting to eula=true only if you accept it. Save the file in plain text.

5. Set a fixed memory allocation
Use a startup script with equal minimum and maximum heap values so Java does not resize the heap during play. For example:
java -Xms8G -Xmx8G -jar server.jar noguiThe jar name in the command must match the loader-generated server jar. The 8 GB value is an example, not a universal requirement. One guide recommends 10–16 GB for large kitchen-sink packs, while another suggests 6–8 GB. Because those recommendations conflict, check the chosen pack’s own documentation and leave RAM for the operating system and other services. Giving a machine all of its physical memory can cause swapping or make the operating system unstable.
6. Start again and watch the console
Relaunch with the same script and wait for a message indicating that the server has finished loading. Read the first error instead of repeatedly restarting. Common causes are an incorrect loader, an incomplete server pack, incompatible Java, or a client-only mod copied into the server directory.
7. Configure the world and access settings
Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration files. Set the world options, difficulty, whitelist, and other pack-supported settings, then start again. Keep the whitelist enabled while testing if the server is private. Share the exact pack release, Minecraft version, loader, and server address with players; an address without the matching client details is not enough to connect reliably.
Java versions and launch scripts
Java compatibility depends on the Minecraft release. Search summaries commonly cite Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 and later, and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and later. Those version rules were not confirmed against an official Mojang page in the available material, so treat them as starting points and follow the pack’s current documentation or installer check. Running a newer Java than the pack supports can be just as problematic as running an older one.
Verify the runtime actually used by the script, not only the Java version installed system-wide. On a machine with multiple Java installations, call the intended executable by its full path or set the service environment explicitly. If the console reports an unsupported class version, review the Java requirement before changing mods or world files.
How much RAM does a modpack server need?
RAM is workload-dependent: the mod count, world-generation activity, view distance, number of players, and automation all affect usage. ATM10’s roughly 500-mod scale places it in the large kitchen-sink category, but the download count itself says nothing about an exact heap requirement.

- Set
-Xmsand-Xmxto the same value. - Reserve memory for the operating system, panel, monitoring tools, and backups.
- Increase the heap only after logs or a monitor show memory pressure; more RAM cannot fix a broken mod, wrong Java version, or incompatible loader.
- If the server lags while heap use remains comfortable, investigate CPU load, world generation, storage latency, or a faulty mod instead of allocating memory blindly.
The published guidance available here ranges from 6–8 GB to 10–16 GB for large packs. That spread is why a pack-specific recommendation takes priority over a generic hosting advertisement.
Managed-panel installation
- Open the panel’s modpack or software installer.
- Select the exact pack release, Minecraft version, and loader. If the pack is not listed, upload its official server pack rather than a client archive.
- Confirm the panel’s Java runtime and choose a memory limit that satisfies the pack documentation while leaving room for the host system.
- Install and let the panel finish before editing files. Interrupting an import can leave a partial library or configuration set.
- Start the server once, accept the EULA in the panel’s file editor if prompted, and wait for a successful load.
- Connect with a client built from the same pack release. Test with one player before opening access to the whole group.
Panel-specific buttons vary, so use the labels shown by your provider. The non-negotiable checks are the same: server distribution, loader, Minecraft version, Java compatibility, and adequate storage and RAM.
First-connection checklist for players
- Install the same launcher profile or pack release named by the server owner.
- Confirm the Minecraft version and loader shown in the profile.
- Allow the launcher to finish downloading every mod before starting.
- Remove client additions that conflict with the pack if the pack documentation does not include them.
- Enter the server address exactly as supplied by the owner.
- If connection fails, capture the complete error and the client log; “it does not work” does not identify a version, loader, or missing-mod problem.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server stops immediately
Check the first stack trace for Java, loader, or missing-file errors. Confirm that the startup command points to the correct jar and that the server pack was extracted completely. A client-only mod or shader in the server directory is a frequent cause of crashes.
Players see a mod-list or version mismatch
Compare the server’s exact pack release, Minecraft version, and loader with the player’s launcher profile. Reinstalling the same release on both sides is safer than manually adding individual mods, because configuration and dependency versions must also match.
The server is out of memory
Check the current -Xms/-Xmx values, the machine’s physical RAM, and the pack’s documented range. Increase the heap only when the host has spare memory; otherwise reduce concurrent load, view distance, or unnecessary services according to the pack’s guidance. Do not allocate all physical RAM to Java.
The world loads but feels slow
Separate memory symptoms from CPU or storage symptoms. Watch the console while exploring new terrain, because world generation can create temporary load. An SSD, adequate CPU capacity, and a reasonable player distance matter even when the heap is large. If a specific mod repeatedly appears in warnings, consult the pack’s issue tracker before deleting files from a live world.
An update broke the world
Stop the server, make a complete backup of the world and configuration, and record the previous pack release. Test the new release in a separate directory or copied world. Never overwrite the only working installation before confirming that the loader, mods, and saved world are compatible.

Backups, updates, and ongoing administration
A modpack server is a small application stack, not a one-time download. Schedule backups of the world, configuration, whitelist, and scripts. Keep at least one backup outside the live server directory so a corrupted disk or mistaken deletion does not remove every copy.
For updates, read the pack’s release notes, stop the server cleanly, back up first, and install the new server files in a new versioned directory when practical. Preserve the old directory until players have connected successfully and the world has been checked. Tell players the planned maintenance window and the exact new pack release.
Keep a short inventory containing the pack name, Minecraft version, loader, Java runtime, memory flags, server address, backup location, and administrator contact. This turns a future recovery from guesswork into a repeatable procedure.
Which pack and hosting route should you choose?
Choose ATM10 for current large-pack activity
ATM10 is the strongest choice if your priority is a currently prominent, expansive kitchen-sink experience. The available 2026 listing reports about 22.2 million downloads and around 500 mods, but that scale also means you should expect a serious memory and storage plan and should follow its own server documentation closely.
Choose RLCraft for the established hardcore audience
RLCraft is the better fit when you want a demanding hardcore experience and a pack with the strongest reported lifetime totals. Decide between its 1.12.2 and 1.20.1 releases before setup; they require separate client and server installations and should never be mixed.
Choose Pixelmon Modpack for its themed gameplay
Pixelmon Modpack’s reported total of more than 19.8 million places it among the largest cited packs. Treat that number as an undated editorial snapshot and verify the current release, loader, and server distribution before committing to a world.

Choose managed hosting when administration is the obstacle
A managed panel reduces installation work and is useful when your group does not want to maintain Java, services, or networking. It still requires you to select the correct server pack and version.
Choose a home PC or VPS when control matters most
Manual hosting gives you direct control over mods, memory flags, files, backups, and updates. The trade-off is that you become responsible for operating-system security, uptime, storage, and recovery. A home PC is practical for a private group that can tolerate downtime; a VPS is suited to an always-on server owner comfortable with remote administration.
