The most comfortable headphones depend on your ears, head shape and listening habits. For a useful shortlist, match the fit and design to where you’ll use them: the Meze Audio 99 Classics V2 for wired listening, Sony WH-1000XM6 for office use, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for travel, Sennheiser HD 660S2 for open-back listening at home, and Focal Bathys MG for premium wireless listening.

These are use-case recommendations from Crutchfield’s 2026 guide, not a universal ranking. No standardized comfort score establishes which one will feel best on every listener.

How to choose comfortable over-ear headphones

A headphone can feel light in your hand yet uncomfortable after an hour. Fit depends on how much room the ear cups leave, how firmly the band grips, where its weight rests, and whether the pads feel soft or warm over time. Stability matters too: a loose fit may shift when you move, while a tight one can create pressure.

Crutchfield’s comfort framework considers perceived weight, ear-pad softness, headband softness, clamping pressure and security. Its underlying fit study began in 2019, when 20 employees tried more than 50 over-ear headphones across several sessions; that earlier study is not a controlled test of every model in its current guide. RTINGS likewise considers ear-cup space, grip and long-session padding, but the sources do not provide a directly comparable comfort score for all five picks.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
  • Check ear-cup clearance: Your ears should fit inside the cups without being pressed by the driver housing or pad edge. This is especially important if you have larger ears.
  • Notice clamp and headband pressure: Pressure that feels secure at first may become tiring during a long session. If you wear glasses, check how the arms sit beneath the pads.
  • Consider heat: Soft, sealed pads can still feel warm over time. If warmth bothers you, try the headphones for a sustained session when possible.
  • Match the design to the setting: Noise cancellation and a microphone may matter for travel or work; open-back headphones suit quiet rooms, not noisy or shared spaces.

Try a model if you can, or check its return policy before buying. Personal fit varies, and no source establishes a measurement that predicts comfort for every head shape.

Five comfortable headphones by use case

Model Best fit for Weight listed by Crutchfield Key comfort or use consideration
Meze Audio 99 Classics V2 Wired listening 9.3 oz Relaxed fit, soft pads and spring-suspension headband
Sony WH-1000XM6 Work and office 8.96 oz Roomy, padded cups; RTINGS notes shallow earpads
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) Travel 9.28 oz Soft padding, replaceable pads and wireless listening
Sennheiser HD 660S2 Wired listening at home 9.2 oz without cable Roomy open-back cups with velour pads
Focal Bathys MG Premium wireless audiophile listening Not stated in Crutchfield’s guide Premium-priced option for listeners who prioritize wireless audiophile sound

The weights and feature descriptions in this table are those listed in Crutchfield’s 2026 guide; they are not a standardized comfort comparison. A lower listed weight alone does not establish a better fit.

Meze Audio 99 Classics V2: a wired comfort pick

Crutchfield describes the 99 Classics V2 as having a relaxed fit, soft ear pads and a spring-suspension headband intended to distribute pressure. It is a closed-back wired option, so you’ll need to use a cable rather than rely on wireless convenience.

Sony WH-1000XM6: for work and office use

Crutchfield describes roomy, padded ear cups and a wider folding headband designed to spread weight. Its guide lists Bluetooth multipoint and up to 30 hours of battery life with noise cancellation. However, RTINGS calls out the earpads’ shallow depth as a comfort downside. Check that your ears have enough clearance before choosing them, particularly if shallow cups tend to press on your ears.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): for travel

Crutchfield describes a relaxed, lightweight fit, soft padding and replaceable ear pads. It lists up to 30 hours of wireless use. RTINGS finds the Bose padding more generous than the Sony’s, while noting that this model cannot be used passively and has a weaker microphone system. Those differences matter if you want to keep listening with a cable when the battery is depleted or need strong microphone performance.

Sennheiser HD 660S2: for quiet-room listening

Crutchfield describes roomy open-back cups, velour pads and weight distribution that can make these feel lighter than other large audiophile models. The guide lists their weight as 9.2 oz without the cable. Open-back headphones let background noise in and leak sound out, so these are better suited to a quiet home than an airplane, office or shared room.

Focal Bathys MG: for premium wireless listening

Crutchfield includes the Bathys MG as its wireless audiophile comfort pick, while noting its large-driver design and high price. It is aimed at listeners who put a high value on wireless audiophile sound and accept a premium purchase, rather than shoppers looking for a default value option. Crutchfield listed a price of $1,049 when its guide was captured; that figure may change, so check the current price before buying.

Sony or Bose: which fit is more promising?

The sources do not agree on one universal winner. Crutchfield treats the Sony and Bose as close in comfort and gives them different use cases. RTINGS favors the Bose padding over Sony’s shallower earpads, but that comparison does not establish which headphone will suit your ears better. Try both if possible, paying attention to cup depth, clamp pressure and how the headband feels after a longer session.

Choose between them based on more than padding: the Sony guide lists multipoint connectivity and up to 30 hours with noise cancellation, while the Bose guide lists replaceable ear pads and up to 30 hours of wireless use. RTINGS also notes Bose’s passive-use and microphone trade-offs.

Other models and fit observations

Apple AirPods Max 2

Reviews report different fit experiences rather than a single outcome. Tom’s Guide says the mesh canopy helps distribute pressure and recommends Bose for long flights when lightness and noise cancellation matter. What Hi-Fi? reports that the metal earcups can press on ears over time and that some smaller-headed reviewers needed to reposition the cups. These are reviewer assessments, not guarantees about how the headphones will fit you.

Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless

An Android Central reviewer found the fit comfortable during long stretches but noticed warmth around the ears after about 45 minutes in their own session. That single observation may help if heat is a concern, but it is not a broad comfort statistic.

Quick recommendations

  • For wired listening: Start with the Meze Audio 99 Classics V2 if you want a closed-back design, or consider the open-back Sennheiser HD 660S2 for a quiet room.
  • For office use: Consider the Sony WH-1000XM6, but verify that its cup depth works for your ears.
  • For travel: Consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if its fit and microphone trade-offs suit your needs.
  • For premium wireless audiophile listening: The Focal Bathys MG is the premium-priced option in this shortlist.

Comfort is a personal fit, not a quality that can be settled by ranking listed weights. Cup clearance, pressure and heat over time are better reasons to choose one of these models over another.
