In Mortal Shell II, the Harbinger is the player character, while Shells are fallen warriors it can possess. Shells shape combat abilities and playstyle; Shades recolor a Shell, and Dark Forms change the Harbinger’s appearance. A guide describes Dark Forms as cosmetic rather than new Shells or combat upgrades.
How the Harbinger, Shells, Shades, and Dark Forms differ

PlayStation’s official Mortal Shell II listing says, “You control the Harbinger, a being that must reclaim the Undermether’s stolen eggs that are now ruthlessly guarded by grotesque, dangerous creatures.” It also describes possessing discovered warriors. Choose a Shell for its combat identity
Shells are the choice that matters for combat style: PlayStation describes each discovered warrior as bringing innate strengths and mastered abilities. The cited guide says the Harbinger’s broader progression continues across Shells, rather than each Dark Form creating a separate progression path.

Use Shades and Dark Forms for appearance
The guide describes Shades as color variations for a Shell and Dark Forms as appearances for the Harbinger. It does not attribute category-wide combat statistics, abilities, or a separate progression system to Dark Forms. Do not treat one as a build or upgrade on that evidence.

If an individual appearance’s current in-game description states an effect, that specific description should take precedence over the general guide. This is especially relevant after game updates.
Which Dark Forms does the guide name?

The guide reports that Cosmic Harbinger unlocks by completing the game. It reports that Flayed Harbinger was a reward for playing the Open Beta for 30 minutes. That beta condition is historical, not a dependable current unlock instruction; check the live game or platform listing for current availability. The official PlayStation listing includes an Open Beta edition with a Flayed Harbinger bonus, but that listing alone does not establish the current route to unlock it in-game.

This explanation concerns Mortal Shell II, not other games or characters called Harbinger. PlayStation’s US listing identifies Playstack Limited as publisher and gives the PS5 release date as August 20, 2026. It lists the full game, a Devout Edition upgrade, and an Open Beta edition. The same listing describes more than 80 dungeons and combat without stamina gauges; those are PlayStation product-description claims, not independent measurements.
