The Volatile Fragment is reported as a reward for defeating Vrannic, the Grand Illusionist, at the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon. It is a sidearm-slot Combat Tarstone whose effect makes enemies killed by ranged attacks explode, damaging nearby enemies. The route comes from community guides, including beta-era references, so treat its exact retail directions as unconfirmed.
Where to find the Volatile Fragment
Community guides place the reward in the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon encounter, rather than in a separate hidden chest. Nerd’s Chalk points players toward the Mushroom Village area and identifies the Beacon as the landmark (Nerd’s Chalk’s Volatile Fragment guide).
A more detailed community route describes the boss as being at the end of the Hall of Illusions, unlocked by cleansing the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon. The guide says to enter the Beacon dungeon, break a wall in the far corner of the cultist room, then drop through when the floor gives way (Mortal Shell 2 Hub’s Vrannic guide). These are unofficial directions, not a developer walkthrough.
There is an important version caveat: MortalShell2.org labels its Mushroom Village reward route as an Open Beta reference and cautions that beta information alone does not establish retail encounter locations or drops (MortalShell2.org’s Mushroom Village page). The available route evidence therefore supports the Beacon as the place to look, but does not confirm every step for the current retail build.

Which boss drops it?
The associated boss is Vrannic, also called the Grand Illusionist, according to the community boss guide. Defeating the encounter is reported to award the Fragment; it is not described as a standalone pickup elsewhere in the area.
What the Volatile Fragment does
The unofficial Mortal Shell II Database classifies the item as a sidearm-slot Combat Tarstone and describes its effect this way: “Enemies dying by a ranged attack will explode dealing splash damage” (Mortal Shell II Database’s Volatile Fragment entry). In practical terms, a ranged kill can add area damage around the defeated enemy, making the effect most relevant when enemies are clustered.

Nerd’s Chalk reports damage values of 15, 25, and 35 at successive levels, but those figures are secondary-guide claims; their exact level mapping and current-client accuracy are not established by the cited evidence. Treat them as unverified rather than as guaranteed current stats.

The official Steam listing identifies Mortal Shell II as a standalone sequel and lists its release date as August 20, 2026 (Mortal Shell II on Steam). It does not verify this item’s route, reward, or effect. Those details come from unofficial guides and a reference database, and the beta-era route caveat means the directions should not be treated as first-party confirmation.
