Tarstones provide melee, sidearm, or support effects, and the available effect list comes from an Open Beta client—not a verified current retail build. To upgrade them, unlock upgrades at the Tarforge with Etching Needles. Official updates also changed Tarcore availability, but the sources available do not establish a complete current cost or effect-by-level chart.
What Tarstones do
Tarstones are equipment that modify melee attacks, sidearms, or support capabilities. Their effects include passive bonuses as well as abilities that consume Resolve. Exact wording and values may vary by build, so use the tooltip in your current game for decisions.
The effect examples below come from Open Beta client text identified as build 24459107, checked on August 18, 2026. That snapshot records 72 named Tarstones across 73 client records: 35 melee, 33 sidearm, and 4 support entries. These are counts from that beta text, not a confirmed count of current retail items. Any “[value]” shown in that text is an unresolved localization placeholder, not a usable number.

Melee Tarstones
The beta text includes weapon infusions such as Curse, Lightning, and Burn; passive bonuses to critical chance, critical damage, Resolve gain, or damage at low health; and Resolve-consuming attacks such as charged strikes, shockwaves, and attacks that hit multiple targets.

Sidearm Tarstones
Recorded sidearm effects include piercing or multiple projectiles, splash damage, damage over time, critical modifiers, knockback or pulling effects, and Resolve-consuming elemental infusions.
Support Tarstones
The beta snapshot lists support effects such as gaining more Gloom or Coin from slain foes, reducing damage taken, and improving Riposte damage. These descriptions do not confirm current retail values.

How to unlock Tarstone upgrades
Etching Needles unlock Tarstone upgrades at the Tarforge, according to the secondary guide information available. The official Week 1 Update describes subsequent changes to Tarcores and progression, but does not provide a complete current upgrade-cost table.
What changed about Tarcores and upgrading
The official Mortal Shell II Week 1 Update says that “Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite resources, allowing all shells and Tarstones to be upgraded in a single playthrough.” It also says Tarstones return more Tarcores when broken and that Merrick’s stock can include Tarstones and Tarcores as progression advances.

The update introduced Fragile Tarstones, which break after losing durability and yield a Tarcore. It specifically says Justicar’s Stone and Gloombound Stone became fragile, received stronger passive effects and on-break effects, and could be found multiple times. Existing saves whose stones had already been leveled received compensatory Tarcores.
These notes establish the direction of the economy changes, not exact current costs, XP thresholds, or the magnitude of every effect at each level. Check the current Tarforge and item tooltips rather than relying on unverified figures.

Tarstones named in Balance Patch 1
Balance Patch 1 names five buffed Tarstones. It gives no numeric change for any of them; Bulwark Stone’s damage reduction is described as increased significantly.

There is no supported universal “best Tarstone” ranking: usefulness depends on weapon compatibility, build, and current balance. Compare options using these practical checks:

- Compatibility: Is the Tarstone for melee, sidearm, or support?
- Cost to use: Does it provide a passive bonus, or spend Resolve when activated?
- Role: Does it add damage or a status effect, or instead offer control, stagger, or defense?
- Current effect: Does the current in-game tooltip match the beta description, and does the effect fit your weapon and build?

The available location notes are labeled Open Beta and cover only a subset of stones. Their routes are not retail guarantees. Confirm a route in a current game build before relying on it; a complete current retail location list is not established here.
